    Very disappointed

2/5 B. Roberts (FL) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Iomega 160 GB External Hard Drive (33082) (Personal Computers) Given the # of good reviews, I bought the 160 GB and am in Day 3 of trying to get it to work. Part of that time was 24 hours of THINKING that it was working (blue light flashing, pop-up window reporting that files were being transferred), but I don't think that the drive would ever have stopped. When I finally tried to Cancel the operation; it hung my computer (couldn't CTRL-ALT-DEL it; I couldn't even turn the computer off -- I had to unplug the computer!; then, it took 2 tries to get it to boot up again correctly). I will spend some MORE time on the support web site; the "manual" is indeed useless & apparently inaccurate. I'm afraid that I have a lemon here. Don't buy this.

2/5 Eric Lawrence (Austin, TX, USA) - See all my reviews, February 4, 2005

Ok...where should i start with this??

When I bought this Hard drive, it was to plug in with my desktop that only had 12 gigs of hard drive space, thrown along with it another hard drive which was 40 gigs. Now it is being plugged into my new deskop which i had for a little over a year now.I love the speed of this thing when it transfers data. But then as months went by, I started to see the flaws in the product.1. It started to make this really loud spinning noise like that you hear when you boot up your lap top.2. There isn't a way to even disconnect the drive from my computer anymore. You know that little icon that has a green arrow at the bottom right task bar to tell you if you wanted to disconnect it the safe way? yeah. that one. nope, doesn't even work anymore, it always tells me that there is an error message that it can't disconnect at the moment and try again later. 1 hours later, still the same error message, and then half and hour still the same. you get my drift? the only way... 3/5 MadHatter - See all my reviews This review is from: Iomega 160 GB External Hard Drive (33082) (Personal Computers) When I bought this Hard drive, it was to plug in with my desktop that only had 12 gigs of hard drive space, thrown along with it another hard drive which was 40 gigs. Iomega Seems to be Best of Breed with USB Hard Drives

This is my third Iomega. First was a "Silver Portable" 40GB drive. Ran perfectly for over a year and I gave it to my son so he could finally back up his WinXP system. Then I bought a 120GB USB/Firewire "Silver Portable" and it ran perfectly for over a year and was just retired to my backup computer so I could buy a larger one, my first Iomega that's not a "Silver Portable".If you've read complaints throughout Amazon about the Western Digital and Maxtor and others regarding some very important flaws like running noisy, breaking in a few months, and not getting enough power from the USB port, then do consider this one. This drive runs very quietly and only draws around 100mA from a standard 500mA USB port. You've probably read that it's important with Windows XP to format your USB hard drive using the NTFS file system and then set it in device manager's "Policies" tab to "optimize for performance". That's quite true and worth mentioning. You'll get best speed this... 5/5 S. Gerber (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews, February 6, 2008

Great Drive --- BUT DON'T FORGET TO RE-FORMAT IT!

After researching portable Hard Drives for about a month and comparing drives from the likes of Toshiba, Seagate & Western Digital, I decided on this drive mostly because of the review I read on cnet.com.The drive is super fast at writing files and is very easy to use.I also purchased the to hold and protect the drive when not in use. The two were made for each other! One point I feel I must mention is that if you're using Windows you MUST re-format the drive. The drive comes standard formatted to FAT32 which basically means it can be used on Macs and PCs. However, for it to function at a top-notch level with Windows, you must format it to NTFS format. For example, on my first day of using it I thought something was wrong with my drive as every now and then it would cut out as... 5/5 L. Easy and Efficient

5/5 Craig (Alexandria, VA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 160GB, Cherry Red - 33832 (Personal Computers) I purchased the portable hard drive to back up important data on my C-drive. It was not necessary to install the software. The portable drive quickly sucks up the information from my computer's hard drive. While the portable drive is backing up I'm still able to use the internetwithout having to wait on the back up process.I've had no chance to try and move files from one computer to another but expect it to be easy. The only thing I would have liked the Iomega portable drive to come with is a travel case. I'll probably look into purchasing a low cost one but first intend to try carrying it in the pocket of my planner. GREAT NAS Device

Very well made NAS for a VERY reasonable price. Has very quick file access times. Only complaint - It does support wireless 11g but doesn't support WPA, only WEP. NOT FOR NOVICE USERS or users with limited computer experience - user must know a little about subnets and TCP/IP configuration. Instructions are LIMITED. If you can configure advanced setting on a netgear or linksys router, you can configure the IOMEGA NAS device. Uses a web based configuration utility just like a router. There is an RJ45 in the back for wired connection or you can use the 11g wireless connection. To setup the NAS you can either attach it to your computer directly through the ethernet port or use the wireless. YOU MUST however change the IP of the computer being used to setup the NAS. I set mine up using wireless. When you plug in the NAS, wireless is setup by default but it is set to a "FIXED" APIPA address of 169.254.10.10. YOU MUST SET the computer trying to access the device to the SAME network or you... 5/5 B. Severance (AL United States) - See all my reviews, October 21, 2006

    DONT BOTHER

I originally had a Simpletech extrernal harddrive that worked brilliantly, but traded it for this Iomega since I thought how useful it would be to have my storage available wirelessly. That is, if it would actually wirelessly connect to my computer. The instruction manual for this thing is terrible, it doesnt even show what each symbol and component is! The seeminly 'simple' instructions have no information about troubleshooting, for that you have to go to the unhelpful CD that is included. In order to set it up in any way, you must have it connected to you computer wirelssly (NO PLUG AND PLAY DIRECTLY BETWEEN YOUR COMPUTER AND THIS MACHINE). Well, unfortunately it will not connect to my computer wirelessly, or even show up in My Network Spaces as it is supposed to.Now, Im definately not stupid when it comes to electronics, but I sure felt that way trying to get this stupid thing to work on my computer, or any other computer.
