LaCie's well-designed brick will hose your data!

I bought this drive without doing my usual research and luck was NOT with me. It wouldn't boot at all into Mac OS X 10.4, despite performing well-enough with 10.3.9. Efforts to discover a solution prompted me to Google this device... and basically the firewire controllers LaCie uses on these drives are so poorly designed, they just can't handle the newer OS.Further, they can and do fail catastrophically causing data loss.I've taken the IDE hard drive out of the enclosure (mine's a Hitachi Deskstar) and will install it into a firewire enclosure kit or perhaps a spare bay inside a G4 for backups. If you own one, I recommend you buy an enclosure kit from Other World Computing and swap the drive out of the LaCie. To do so, simply slide a shim, like a credit card (I used a stainless steel ruler), up into the slot between the bottom plate and the plastic outer 'box' of the drive. There are 4 metal clips along each long side that will release. As one side... 1/5 Foghorn Leghorn (Amarillo) - See all my reviews This review is from: LaCie 160GB Firewire Desktop External Hard Drive ( 300702U ) P3 design by FA Porsche (Personal Computers) I bought this drive without doing my usual research and luck was NOT with me. Barely six days of use and already failing

After 6 days of usage, this drive showed 8 uncorrectable sector errors. I have many other hard drives from other brands and they have never developed a single sector error in years of usage (and by usage I mean left on for weeks at a time). This is a pathetic and completely unacceptable reliability record and I would have expected better from the Porsche + LaCie brands. The drive inside is a Seagate ST2000LM007-1R8174 according to disk information, so it didn't really surprise me that the drive would be faulty, since the other drive that has failed me was a 3 TB Seagate Backup Plus Desktop drive. Seagate received a class-action lawsuit for the failure of that drive.I used it like any other drive: unpack, format and use. I didn't use any USB hubs, different cables or anything that might have caused a problem.Everything was going fine until the drive suddenly turned off its light (note: USB port is not faulty, I have tried it on other ports, and I have used... 1/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) " It worked great until it didn't

1/5 Joe (Pittsburgh) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LaCie Porsche Design P'9220 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive 302000 (Personal Computers) This died in 4 months. My computer (iMac) was getting ready to go kaput, so I bought this to use as a backup. It died in 4 months. I kept getting an error message "A USB device is drawing too much power and has been disabled." It worked great until it didn't. I didn't even have it set to backup automatically--I did it manually every week or so, so it wasn't being overworked. And it wasn't moved around a lot--I connected it to my computer and it stayed put until it died. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 23, 2016

Performs well once properly formatted, but that can be difficult under Windows

I've been using LaCie portable drives for at least 10 years now and haven't had any long-term issues with them either when constantly powered and used or when stored long-term un-powered. However it has become inevitable that I need to spend serious effort making them work on my Windows7 systems. I've deducted two stars due to the difficulty and tech skills needed to make them work, but give them three stars because they do work in the end. I'm sure many have returned their units thinking they are defective when it's actually the fault of the setup utilities (I did just this with my first Minimus drives). Bottom line, if they won't configure following the factory procedures there's little reason to care why they don't work. I wouldn't hesitate to return them if the configuration app fails and you don't want to tackle the tech job of making them work.I create a single partition on the drives and use them primarily for automatic backup of both NAS servers and Windows... 3/5 JMoomaw (Portland, OR, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
