    Love it!

5/5 Melissa - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Toshiba Canvio Basics 1TB Portable Hard Drive - Black (HDTB310XK3AA) (Personal Computers) I take A LOT of pictures. I had concerns that with my computer being a few years old already that some day I would try to turn it on and it wouldn't start. So, I bought this to use as a back up. I've had this for about a week and already filled up over 100GB (that's with every picture, file and document that is on my computer). I still have a little over 800GB left! After having it plunged into your computer and it not being in use for a certain amount of time, it will shut off. Which I love because if it's not being used, I would rather it be off. With me taking as many pictures as I do, this may have been the best money I have spent..other than my camera of course! :) It comes with the cord to connect it to your computer as well., June 5, 2015

Runs cool and transfers data quickly.

I have owned this drive for 1 week. I am impressed with how cool it runs; it does not get hot like my older 2010 model external hdds. I am also impressed with how lightweight it is, and I also like the shape of it and that it is pretty small. It's also nice that it is plug and play and does not require a separate power source. I glanced at the NTI backup software and the PogoPlay cloud data access software but did not use it yet since Windows backup handles my backup needs and plugging the drive into the usb port on my router handles my cloud data access needs. To note, the user interface of the NTI backup software is nice looking and easy to use. When I used the drive to take a system image of my mom's new laptop, the data transfer rate was averaging ~110MBps since her laptop has usb 3.0 capability. At home I only have usb 2.0 so my speeds are just ~10MBps which is to be expected. A very happy Mac user

I'm a Mac user. I'm by no means a tech savvy person but I can manage pretty well. Thanks to the reviews here, I knew I had to do something to make sure the disk worked properly on my Mac. If you're so inclined, you can simply connect the drive to your Mac, find the Mac folder in it, follow the instructions, and install the little application that comes with the disk. One of the reviewers mentioned simply using Disk Utility to format the drive and that's what I did:1) connect the drive using the USB 3.0 cable included in the package;2) open up Disk Utility app on the Mac (use Spotlight if you don't know where to find it or even what it is);3) select the mounted partition of the drive (this is a jargon you don't need to understand, just select the nested TOSHIBAEXT under the external drive listing on the left);4) Go to Erase, select the "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)" format in the dropdown, then click "Erase". This is the updated version of the Toshiba Canvio Connect. I dont use any of the cloud features or anything like that. I use these to carry stuff from here to there or to move files from this device to another when its just not practical to do it any other way. And my old 500GB drive was getting a bit long in the tooth plus a little bit too small. Its your standard 2.5" 5400RPM with a 8MB cache and S.M.A.R.T. capability. Nothing to write home about. But toshiba tends to make pretty good quality consumer drives.Drive performance is what you would expect. I used crystaldiskmark. I also used crystaldiskinfo for the technical spec's. They definitely did some QC on the drive as it was started 5 times before they sent it out. So all good there. High Quality Portable Hard Drive

Took a dive and ordered this hard drive right after it was released. I'm very glad I did.PROS:The hard drive itself is constructed very well; it has a very sturdy feeling metal casing that looks very high quality. It is very slim and small in dimensions, roughly the size of a modern smartphone. It also has a neat LED feature that is blue when connected to USB 3.0 ports, and white when connected to USB 2.0 ports. The device draws power from your USB port, so no external power supply is needed. Toshiba also includes a micro USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 cable, so you can immediately plug and play at the high speeds USB 3.0 has to offer.Transfer rates with this device are very quick. I'm seeing write speeds of around 120 MB/sec for copy/paste folder backup. I also did a full system backup (about 165GB) in about 25 minutes. This device also comes with this cool software called pogoplug. It's normally a $30 software package that allows you to use this... 5/5 superweasle - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent value for a great drive, plus some notes on drive failure.

These drives are great, solely because they carry a 3-yr warranty. They work fine on PC/Mac (providing you partition them as needed), have decent power requirements (so they work off a regular USB port) and thanks to the density, rotational speed and (if available on your computer) USB3 connectivity they are surprisingly fast (70+MB/s). We have 30+ drives like these at the office, and they fail at the usual rate of external hard drives, no different than any other brand. However, I keep coming back to these because of the 3-yr warranty, which doesn't mean they won't fail, but rather that they will get replaced for free when they do.One last word on hard drives:I've seen reviews on these and other drives speaking to their reliability...they really all are very similar. Magnetic hard drives WILL fail eventually. Whenever you hear people complaining about drives that fail, and citing as the control in their apparent lab experiment their "old Dell/Compaq/HP computer... 5/5 Borgeano (92691) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great product! Very slim, discrete, and clean setup.

4/5 Drewford - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Toshiba Canvio Slim II 500GB Portable External Hard Drive, Black (HDTD205XK3D1) (Personal Computers) This HDD is absolutely fantastic. Works great, is very quiet and discrete, and the slim design of it is outstanding. The HDD is powered directly by the current that is output through the USB port on your PC, laptop, or gaming console, and therefore does not require an external power source. This makes for a much more streamlined and clean setup. I really love it.I did subtract one star because it is not clear that only the latest USB 3.0 ports are capable of fully powering this HDD. If you want to run this HDD on an older device that has USB 2.0 ports, you may need to buy a Y-cable so that you can harness the power of two ports to run this device. If the HDD packaging or description would have clarified this better, I would have given 5 stars. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 4, 2016

Wham, Bam! Speedy, Reliable, 5TB, and Cost-Effective. What more could you want?

This is a review for the 5TB model. I do not understand why there are so many negative reviews on here, but this is probably due to the other, not 5 TB models. In my humble opinion, these are complete garbage, so do not waste your time. These smaller drives, I believe, were manufactured by Hitachi on contract with Toshiba. However, these are manufactured by Toshiba themselves, as they bought Hitachi's Desktop Drive Division a few months back. This model, however, is a true feat of technological engineering. Primarily, this drive uses a completely new internal drive architecture, probably obtained from Hitachi. Before Hitachi sold its business off (and Toshiba acquired it), they were the leaders in pushing the capacity barrier with their 6TB Helium filled drives, and Toshiba has applied the same technology here. (Well, not the helium part). I do not really understand it, but the Toshiba uses a special technology called Perpendicular Magnetic Recording. Apparently, this uses... 5/5 Techno Geek - See all my reviews This review is from: Toshiba 5TB Canvio Desktop External Hard Drive (HDWC250XK3J1) (Personal Computers) This is a review for the 5TB model. Toshiba 3TB - The Trick for Sleep Mode

I really wish we could do 1/2 stars as I would put this around 3.5, for now... You'll read a lot of bad reviews and issues for these drives, valid issues that you will need to deal with in order to use it to its fullest. When I went out searching for another external hard drive I wanted to get another Seagate, as they have always done right by me. I was eyeing two 4TB versions from Seagate, one was a NAS and another just a normal external HDD. The only reason I didn't get them was because the price for both jumped within a week's time. I then pondered a 5TB, but they were too pricey. I then saw the Toshiba 3TB Canvio and noticed that if I bought two of them used (at the time), they would be the same price as one 4TB. So I took the risks and bought two. These drives were considerably cheaper than their Seagate counterparts. A Seagate 3TB will now cost around $10 more, and I would recommend one of those over Toshiba until Toshiba decides to smarten up and make... 3/5 Big Grizz - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) My first bad review of a product

1/5 Tennis4Rick (Corona, Ca United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Toshiba Canvio HDWC130XK3J1 3TB Desktop External Hard Drive (Black) (Personal Computers) Well I guess it had to happen. My first bad review of a product. I bought 3 of these over 4 months. Two are now dead, my PC's wont read them. I have two desktops and one laptop and neither will read the drive. The drive just clicks away.I was using them to store my Dvd collection. I was transferring my collection to the drives to save space and was going to give my Dvd's away. Well good thing I decided to wait on the give away. But I have lost countless hours of transferring the movies. I have put in a return request but from the other bad reviews all Toshiba does is give you a credit. Which will not do much good since I will not trust Toshiba drives again. I should have stuck to Seagate, none of their drives have failed me. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 11, 2014

The light on it is white and blinks during data transfer, but it is not intrusive or anoying at... 5/5 Adrenaline - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A very happy Mac user

I ejected... 5/5 JK - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Average 2.5" 5400RPM USB 3.0 drive, Nice form factor. Expect a lot of service from this device. Good price point.

4/5 K.M. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Toshiba Canvio Connect II 1TB Portable Hard Drive, Silver (HDTC810XC3A1) (Personal Computers) Solid drive, nice form factor. I expect to get a lot of years of use out of this drive and will update this review if I dont., February 21, 2015
