Popular Mechanics

2005-11

Building your own external hard drive is a 5-minute job that can be done without opening up your PC's case. By buying an internal drive and an enclosure to put it in, you save money. ... Laptop hard drives are more expensive, but smaller and lighter, and some can draw power through a USB cable. ... data transfer is only as fast as the slowest connection, so the higher speed of a SATA drive is wasted if the data is handed off to a USB 2.0 cable that moves bits at one-sixth the speed.

Sub-par enclosure using JMicron JMS567; look elsewhere if you desire quality

I purchased the Sabrent EC-UASP (date: 2015/07/17) with the intentions of using it with a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD as an external backup and storage device. As someone who has worked with both consumer and professional ATA/SATA and SCSI/SAS storage subsystems, and have familiarity with ATA protocol in addition to USB specifications, I tend to have high standards, so when reading my review please keep that in mind. Below are my opinions that justify a 2-star rating, with photos included:* A review from 2015/01/23 states, backed with photo evidence, that the EC-UASP uses an ASMedia 1053E SATA-to-USB bridge IC. However, the product I received uses a JMicron JMS567 SATA-to-USB bridge IC (USB vendor ID 0x152d, product ID 0x1567). JMicron has a track record of designing fairly buggy and unreliable storage ICs, often compounded with bad performance and quirky behaviour (i.e. SMART pass-through is often not supported or done incorrectly), and as such I avoid their chipsets; I... 2/5 Jeremy Chadwick (Mountain View, CA, US) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Supports Trim! Good speed.

I got a 500GB SSD recently and have been looking for an enclosure for it and so I tried the Sabrent-UASP one. A couple of things I was looking for:- Support for UASP: Not sure if there's a way to tell this, but- Good speed: Using HDTach, about 200 MB/sec average, random access: 0.1 msec, burst: ~282 MB/sec- Support for Trim: Ran Trimcheck and this is the FIRST USB 3.0 enclosure that passed as supporting TrimThat last one (Trim) was a big one, as I was having doubts about using the SSD in an enclosure because of lack of Trim support, but I found found one that works!Another plus (to me) is that the cable has two of the "normal" USB connectors instead of one of the dual-wide micro USB, which I think are too fragile. Also, it actually has a working power button!A couple cons:- Case is plastic (but they provide sponges for the front and top so the SSD is snug inside).- It's kind of hard to get open,... 4/5 JL (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: [USB 3.0 & Tool-free ] Inateck USB 3.0 HDD SATA External Hard Drive Disk Enclosure Case for 9.5mm 7mm 2.5 Inch SATA HDD and SSD(FE2004) (Personal Computers) Used to repurpose old 2.5" 200gb Seagate harddrive (9.5 mm) prior to disposing of my old laptop. Lightweight, well designed and easy to install. For only $10, this is a cost-effective way to add some additional portable storage.UPDATE: Tested this enclosure with a new Samsung 850 EVO SSD which was purchased subsequent to this review and was disappointed with read/write speeds of only 150 MB/s as compared to the Sabrent 2.5mm enclosure that I purchased with the SSD, which was almost 3x as fast with the same SSD in the 1GB Crystal Disk Mark test. However, this enclosure is still great for the 9.5mm harddrive I am using it with but would recommend a different enclosure if you are planning on using this for a SSD (in which case, I would recommend you looking for a slimmer (and faster) 7mm enclosure. Excellent tool-less enclosure

I purchased this enclosure because I needed more external hard drives and I grew tired of having to get a screwdriver to take out the hard drive for my older enclosure. It fits my new drives very well. The cover is easy to remove, just some firm pressure where it snaps into the enclosure. I had to bend the SATA connection a bit to get the drive on and to fit in the case. I’m sure that won’t cause any damage as long as you’re careful. Once it is in, there is a foam pad that it comes with that has to be attached to the cover that comes off. I put mine in the middle of it but you can put it wherever you like. There is a small, blue LED light on the side with the Inateck branding on it that turns on when it is plugged in and... 5/5 Vinny R. Drive enclosure works fine

4/5 Dr. Martin Ullmann - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I was looking around a little bit to find a decent 2.5" enclosure for a low price. When checking the reviews of similar products I found some eye-opening remarks which let me think that I better spend a few more $. However I was not willing to spend much more and gave this enclosure a chance. The product I got is fine and there is nothing to complain about it, especially not for its price. Yes, it is simple and made out of plastic but well build, everything is aligned, there are no gaps or sharp edges. For the money you pay you can not ask for more and will not be disappointed. Installation of the HD was super easy and the speed I get is perfectly fine for moving "my normal" amounts of documents and data (typically several GB's at a time). Since I bought and assembled it a few months have passed so I thought I give it a "thumbs up" as this seems to be a good value for the $ spend. This review is from: ORICO Portable Tool Free 2.5 inch SATA to USB 2.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure Case -Black (Accessory) A great way to turn a regular intern hard drive into a storage device. Super intuitive and easy, just slide the case open and pop your drive in and out. No tools required. When I upgraded my MacBook's hard drive to a SSD I used this to hook the new drive up to install the OS on, then when I exchanged the hard drives I put the old one in this and now I have a slim external drive. Liked it enough I bought two. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 3, 2017

2/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: ORICO Portable Tool Free 2.5 inch SATA to USB 2.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure Case -Black (Accessory) Item is easy to use but the drive will lose connectivity in multiple devices with multiple hard drives used for no reason. I bought two of these in the interest of re-purposing some unused 2.5" HDD I had laying around. They drives work anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours but when left unattended, they drop from the OS and provide a "file not available" or "can't read from the resource" error in both Windows 10 and Linux. I would not buy these again. Perhaps there is a problem with the chipset used in the case. A shame because the form factor is perfect. It's a good drive. But there's a major flaw in the design..

4/5 Motavator - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: [Upgraded Version Support UASP] Sabrent Ultra Slim USB 3.0 to 2.5-Inch SATA External Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure [Black] (EC-UK30) (Personal Computers) It's a great drive enclosure. For only $10 you can't go wrong with an aluminum bodied, slim base, Or can you... The adapter speeds are alright. I tested the same hard drive with an Orico enclosure, but got slightly faster speeds with +10MB/s faster read/write. At first when I initially plugged in the drive and placed it inside the enclosure, it would detect on my computer then immediately disconnect. Later, I'd try again but without the body and hard drive was detected and worked well. I found the problem being that on the underside of the PCB, there were two leads over extending from the usb controller. When this was placed inside the enclosure, it would short out due to it being an aluminum body.My solution to the problem was that I placed some electrical tape over the leads of the usb controller on the back of the pcb. Since then, the drive enclosures have been working well as its supposed to be., February 5, 2016

Very good enclosure with some caveats...

I'm a Sabrent fan. I've had really good experiences with their SBT-FTDI USB to Serial cable and use it often. I liked it so much I ended up getting my company to order more for my coworkers. In the same tradition, this is a decent enclosure and well worth the money, but there are some caveats.I initially suffered from some of the similar issues other folks reported here; for re-iteration purposes they include a) freezing your computer's USB bus b) not mounting the hard drive c) seeing the hard drive, but can't transfer data d) randomly disconnecting and e) slow response. When you're dealing with electronics, small sizes are not inherently bad, but they can come with challenges. If you check the underside of the PCB board, make sure that you don't find any component leads (significantly) protruding from the soldered components. What happened with me is that the drive would read fine with the electronics outside of the enclosure, but start exhibiting one or... 3/5 Chris Logan - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: [Upgraded Version Support UASP] Sabrent Ultra Slim USB 3.0 to 2.5-Inch SATA External Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure [Black] (EC-UK30) (Personal Computers) I first purchased the Sabrent due to price and its aluminum constuction regardless of problems some of the users experienced. I did a fix on the case, taping the metal connector that sticks out as some users suggested. I even grinded off a bit of it. Regardless of the fix, I ran into a lot of problem with this Sabrent case, idle, won't connect, flashes endlessly until shut down.I gave up and spent $15 buying the Inateck. It is SO much better, yes it's made with plastic but doesn't have any shortage due to non-metal design. The chip is also covered, unlike the Sabrent one exposed to air. Love the on/off switch and smooth design. I did a speed test and it is noticable faster on the Inateck. See attached image, what else do I have to say..., November 17, 2016

I have a lot of experience with different types of computer hardware. I build computers and deal with computer hardware for a living. This is as simple as it gets. No tools needed. Slide open the top, plug in the drive, connect the USB cable to your PC, and you're done. The power is supplied through the USB 3.0 cable so no additional power supply connection is needed. The performance is excellent as well. This enclosure paired with an SSD and a USB 3.0 port will improve loading times over a HDD enormously. As an example, I used this paired with a SK Hynix 250GB SSD. I plugged this into my Xbox 1 since I had long load times for certain games. In my example, my load times went from 2 min 30 sec with the internal HDD to 40 sec with the SSD in this external enclosure. That is a huge improvement! The improved performance is obviously due to the SSD, but the point is that this enclosure is not limiting that performance. You're getting the full benefit of USB 3.0. I would highly... 5/5 Amazonian - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) EASY TO USE, USB POWERED, RELIABLE

5/5 Saintsea (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Inateck USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure Case for 9.5mm 7mm 2.5-Inch SATA HDD and SSD, Support UASP and Optimized for SSD, Tool-Free (FE2010) (Personal Computers) I really didn't know what to expect from this drive enclosure, but found it rather ingenious how the cover slides on and off without any tools. The drives fit snuggly in the enclosure and it was recognized instantly by my Window 7 and 10 PCs. I used the enclosure to pull data off of a failing HDD prior to upgrading to a SSD, and had no trouble at all retrieving the data or writing it on to the new drive. I especially like that you don't need any supplemental power to use it: It's powered right from the USB connector and has a handy On/Off switch. Ultimately, I put a cheap 1TB HDD into the enclosure and use it for portable storage. It's slim and light for my computer bag. This is the only external drive enclosure I've ever used, and it works well. Highly recommended!
