Great drive - Faulty USB cable

Over the recent years I have purchased quite a number of these drives. I have a couple of USB 2.0 drives and about 12 of the USB 3.0 drives. They all performed flawlessly with my old computer. I purchased that computer in 2006 before these USB 3.0 drives existed and so the computer had only USB 2.0 ports. All the USB 3.0 drives worked perfectly in the computer with the USB 2.0 ports. Then in December 2012 I purchased a new computer and it has USB 3.0 ports. I connected a drive and was anticipating the "blazing speed" for file transfers. But there was a problem...The drive would lose connection and I would get an error message saying that the transfer did not complete and data was lost etc., etc.I contacted the computer manufacturer and they claimed it was a Western Digital problem. I thought they were just passing the buck, but I did some research and found that there are very many complaints all over the Internet about the Passport USB 3.0 drives... 3/5 Jon Anderson (Burlington, WI USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: WD My Passport 1.5TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 Black (WDBY8L0015BBK-NESN) (Personal Computers) Over the recent years I have purchased quite a number of these drives. The PERFECT External Storage Drive For My Macbook Pro

Wow. So many mixed reviews here, and like those of you who are pondering over whether it is worth purchasing this Western Digital MY PASSPORT, there may not be a clear answer.Let me tell you my story.Recently bought the new Retina Macbook Pro with its 500GB SSD drive. For a person like me who puts a lot of software on my laptop and does quite a bit of movie editing, hard drive space is a premium. So, when figuring out how to handle nearly 200GB of music, I decided it would probably be best to run iTunes off an external drive instead of taking up space on the Macbook.Again...Wow. Reading these reviews on Amazon was quite unnerving. So many great experiences with this drive followed up by a handful of negative experiences -- many talking of total hard drive failure. It's almost as if you are rolling the dice as to whether you'll receive a drive that works or doesn't....then there's the reviews from people who claim they are having... 5/5 Ronald Epstein (NJ) - See all my reviews, July 29, 2012

An essential storage backup tool in a digital world

I'm a computer repair technician, and one issue I have all the time with my customers is, the famous, 'a virus hijacked my computer and those precious pictures are inside'. Yeah, the prom, the honeymoon, or the newborn pictures are usually held without ransom. Most of the time we are dealing with malware of some sort that affects the Windows operating system files, but leaves the data intact. So, before I repair the computer, I rescue the pictures, and any other file they might value. However, not all repair technicians do this, most allege that the files are corrupted, which might be the case, but usually it really means they are too busy to rescue anything, don't know how to do it, or will not do it unless paid big cash. For one own's sakes, the best thing to do is backing up the data before the computer gets infected, or the hard drive fails. For pictures I recommend backing up the original files into data discs, but for faster everyday files backups (music, movies,... 5/5 Techie (USA) - See all my reviews, April 24, 2012

    Failed to recognize

I am deployed overseas in the field and it takes about two weeks to get anything shipped from Amazon. So you can imagine my utter disappointment to find out that this product failed in less than a year of receipt. The hard drive worked fine; I purchased it to keep all of my personal files, photos, iTunes purchases, etc.I own two computers; one desktop Intel Dual Core i7 and a HP laptop i5, both running on Windows 7.My work computer is also an HP laptop i5.One day I roll into the office, as usual, and hook up my drive to my personal laptop.I see the light on the drive on steady, but the drive is not recognized.I hook it up to my work laptop to see if it works on that and it was recognized.I later took it home to try it on my home desktop; not recognized. And yes, I've tried contacting tech support (and got a big fat phone bill) and they were of no help.Spent a week researching on Google and all the various forums, but nothing... 1/5 Jae Hyun Park - See all my reviews, February 28, 2012

Fatal Flaw Can Cost You Your Data or a Ton of Cash

Don't buy this USB hard drive. It has a fatal flaw that can cost you all your data or thousands of dollars. Here's why:If you buy a bare 2.5 inch SATA hard drive and an empty USB case for it, it is trivial to replace the case if it is damaged or if the USB connector gets damaged - just buy another case, pop your hard drive in, and viola, you're in business. You'd think you'd be able to do this with this WD drive, but that's not the case (pun intended). This drive has the USB port soldered onto the hard drive controller, so if the port is damaged (easy to do if you accidentally yank the cord), you can't pop the drive out and put it in another case. You have to send the drive to a professional repair house at cost of thousand dollars or more....I've had this happen to two of my customers and I simply will not buy Western Digital USB drives anymore. As a matter of fact, I insist on "building my own" by purchasing empty cases and bare... 1/5 Sourcehound (Chicago) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Skinny Speedy Slab 'o Storage

Although I had a bad experience with the larger WD USB hard drives, their Passports have been great products (as have their internal desktop drives). This USB 3.0 500GB drive is no exception: I have very little USB 3.0 equipment right now, but it's worked just fine with 2.0 as well. It's slightly smaller than the 320GB MyPassport I bought a few years ago, and the other two I've purchased in the last few years, and the shiny piano-black finish looks just a bit nicer than the earlier versions. If there's one thing that bumps this drive up to 5 stars for me though, it's the fact that while the root has software on it, you don't have to install anything to use it: on both Windows 7 and XP, it's just plug and go. That's a big deal for me because I never know what machine I might be connecting this to and I don't want to have to stop to install some drive manager, or say no to some installer splash screen. If you want a lot of storage, USB 3.0 with backwards... 5/5 Trenton Bennett (USA) - See all my reviews, March 27, 2012
