The End Of Science, Facing The Limits Of Knowledge In The Twilight Of The Scientific Age

Creator: John Horgan | Science - 2015-04-14

In The End of Science, John Horgan makes the case that the era of truly profound scientific revelations about the universe and our place in it is over.

Publisher: Basic Books

About this book
In The End of Science, John Horgan makes the case that the era of truly profound scientific revelations about the universe and our place in it is over. Interviewing scientific luminaries such as Stephen Hawking, Francis Crick, and Richard Dawkins, he demonstrates that all the big questions that can be answered have been answered, as science bumps up against fundamental limits. The world cannot give us a “theory of everything,” and modern endeavors such as string theory are “ironic” and “theological” in nature, not scientific, because they are impossible to confirm. Horgan’s argument was controversial in 1996, and it remains so today, still firing up debates in labs and on the internet, not least because—as Horgan details in a lengthy new introduction—ironic science is more prevalent than ever. Still, while Horgan offers his critique, grounded in the thinking of the world’s leading researchers, he offers homage, too. If science is ending, he maintains, it is only because it has done its work so well.

THIS is why there are mixed reviews

I have purchased this item years before, and I am very disappointed with the product that I just received. The good ratings and five stars are from the people that received the original, but lately, people are giving low reviews because the new product is lacking. It may look similar, but upon closer inspection, this is definitely not the item pictured (the case that I bought years back)I uploaded pictures of my original to prove how different it is.1. The new version lacks the WD logo on the zipper2. The new version has an exposed zipper instead of the original finished look of a covered zipper3. The new version is slightly smaller. The original fits perfectly, even with the cord. but I had to TRY to close the zipper with the new one. (like when you pack too many things in a suitcase) This was the biggest indication to me that something was not right. Hence why I pulled out the original to closely compare.4. Doesn't fit the My Passport Wireless drive

3/5 Midas Welby - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Passport Carrying Case - Black (Personal Computers) When I bought the WD My Passport drive, this case was promoted as being compatible via the "Frequently bought together" routine. It is TOO SMALL. (See the photo. Missed it by about 1/2"-3/4". WD includes a list of compatible drives for this case as part of the packaging. Amazon needs to do a better job matching products. On the positive side, if and when I get a case that fits, I expect to be very pleased., March 15, 2015

4/5 B. Nap (New Orleans, LA United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Passport Carrying Case - Black (Personal Computers) This is my bad, but I didn't realize this was a soft case, which isn't what I wanted. Nothing wrong with it, per se, just not what I wanted. It's also very small. I can barely fit the drive (WD passport 1TB) along with the USB cable. For just a little more money, I can get a hard case, which is what I prefer. The picture is a comparison of the DL 64s (hot pink), the AmazonBasic for WD My Passport (black hard case w/blue drive), the WD My Passport carrying case (soft, black case), and an old CaseLogic PHCD case (hard case with silver drive). I posted reviews of the AmazonBasic and the DL64 with more pictures., June 23, 2016

    ### PHYSICAL ###One terabyte that fits in your jeans' pocket. I don't want to go all "when we were young we walked 10 miles to school, etc." on you, but my first hard drive was such that I would have needed 50'000 of 'em to match the capacity, occupying a solid cube 9 feet on each side and setting me back 30 million dollars. That's mind- blowing progress indeed, and while the original advances were made by firms like Seagate and IBM, those have mostly sold off/sourced out in the meantime, leaving Western Digital as the Bleeding Edge hard drive brand. This device looks like a cigarette holder with a glossy finish. The edges are rounded, and the usb connector is the only opening in the case, so for my occasional transport I just carry the drive in my jacket as-is. It would have been super- neat to have a rubber flap over the usb and perhaps a more scratch- resistant matte finish, but there is no issue here, especially since WD offers inexpensive... 4/5 Strohmian (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews, October 21, 2010

    ULTIMATE!

I picked this up from amazon for 50$ before the great Japan Hard Drive Crisis (when the tsunami hit and the power plant melted down). I don't think I could ever fill up this much space and I take photographs DAILY. I have a 8BG card in my cam and at the end of a month or two I put them on this drive. I am nowhere near full or even 25% for that matter. The main reason I bought this one is because it does NOT need an external power supply. Meaning the USB plug that goes to the computer ALSO gives it the power it needs at the same time! It's just a big as a real passport but about two thick. There's a little white light that lets you know if stuff is being transferred. It also stays on constantly if its plugged in so that can be annoying at night because it's so bright it can light an entire room. But when you have 1TB at your fingertips you tend to sleep like a baby even if the light is on!It's not a SSD like most might think. There are moving parts in... 5/5 Castle (Does it matter?) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Western Digital unreliable

WD deserve only one star! I ordered WD My Passport Essential portable external drive in April 2012 from Amazon. I chose WD's portable ext-drive because it came with its own software (WD Smartware) and WD advertise that their software can image your hard-drive for direct reboot. When I got my WD ext-drive I installed the WD Smartware on my Dell laptop to make an image of my laptop's hard drive in case my laptop's hard drive crashes I can boot from WD ext-drive. I even called WD's tech support and had them walk me through the installation for imaging my laptop's hard-drive. The WD Smartware indicated that my entire laptop hard-drive was properly copied. I updated my hard-drive twice a week. In late June 2012 my Dell laptop started having problems. I called WD's tech support and ask them for help. All of a sudden WD's tech support claimed that their software does not do imaging, only saves data files! 2 months earlier they instructed me on how to properly install the WD Smartware for... 1/5 NoName - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Plastic cover. Started beeping

3/5 SnowBreeze (San Jose,Costa Rica) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Passport Essential SE 1TB USB 3.0 / 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Electronics) The delivery was fast and the included sleeve is a nice touch.I had the silver one which has an aluminium casing. This one is just the same except for the plastic casing that gets scratched way to easy (by wiping the dust on top of it). Now, after less than 1 month of use, it started beeping randomly and not being recognized by the computer. It silver brethren works just fine.PROS:I got it for $1301TB of storage , very small in terms of physical dimensions.USB 3.0CONSStarted working intermittently and beeping.Since I do not live in the US I Cannot send it back right awayI used it to back up a few towers of media and sending it back would cause me to lose all that information - not reliable.I really like the silver one and it had no problem. Must have gotten a bad apple. I am a freak with my electronic, so mistreat is out of the questions., January 25, 2012
