Mac OS X Snow Leopard: The Missing Manual, The Missing Manual

Creator: David Pogue | Computers - 2009-10-08

FireWire Disk Mode is a brilliant but little-known Macintosh-only feature that lets you turn one Mac into an external hard drive for ... Note: If both Macs have Apple's FireWire 800 jacks, use a 9-pin FireWire cable instead for much greater speed.

Publisher: "O'Reilly Media, Inc."

About this book
For a company that promised to "put a pause on new features," Apple sure has been busy-there's barely a feature left untouched in Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard." There's more speed, more polish, more refinement-but still no manual. Fortunately, David Pogue is back, with the humor and expertise that have made this the #1 bestselling Mac book for eight years straight. You get all the answers with jargon-free introductions to:Big-ticket changes. A 64-bit overhaul. Faster everything. A rewritten Finder. Microsoft Exchange compatibility. All-new QuickTime Player. If Apple wrote it, this book covers it.Snow Leopard Spots. This book demystifies the hundreds of smaller enhancements, too, in all 50 programs that come with the Mac: Safari, Mail, iChat, Preview, Time Machine.Shortcuts. This must be the tippiest, trickiest Mac book ever written. Undocumented surprises await on every page.Power usage. Security, networking, build-your-own Services, file sharing with Windows, even Mac OS X's Unix chassis-this one witty, expert guide makes it all crystal clear.

    Cheap but useful

Let's say you just bought a new Mac. And you realize it has a Firewire 800 slot. And you have a few Firewire 400 hardrive enclosures you'd rather not get rid of.Instead of going out and buying a new set of Firewire400 to Firewire800 cables to use with your mac and existing Firewire hard drives, this is the economical solution to your problems. Just buy this and you can continue to use your old FW400 cables and save yourself some money. The adapter has a FW400 slot at one end where you plug in your existing FW400 cable and a FW800 plug at the other end which you plug into your Mac's FW800 slot. The adapter itself is chunky, and is a tight fit in the slot right next to my mini DP to DVI adapter but it does fit and it works. There have been no random disconnects or data dropouts during my usage of the adapter to connect my external hard drives and transfer data to and from my mac. I have two of these and both work perfectly on my computer... 4/5 KSSQUARE - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Tripp Lite FireWire 800 IEEE 1394b Hi-speed Cable (9pin/9pin) 10-ft.(F015-010) (Electronics) Bought a used Drobo...it didn't come with a cable...bought this one...it works. Don't really have a whole lot more to say about it. I mean really...it's a Firewire cable. I guess if it had had some kind of a defect and wouldn't actually transfer data from my Mac to the Drobo I might have had some kind of an issue...but it didn't. It worked. Piece of junk - Caveat Emptor!

Firstly, the seller of this item shipped this immediately. Very fast, very pleased with that. Second, this is a fat, braided cable. Very nice *cable* quality. I can imagine this must have very low signal loss. Unfortunately, the connectors are complete JUNK!! What a waste to have such a nice cable with what have to be the worst connectors possible. It makes this cable useless...absolutely useless. I compared this cable with the firewire 800 cable that came with my drive (didn't know it came with one or I would not have ordered this cable). The cable that came with my drive is thin, but the connectors rock. The connectors plugged in and made a solid connection that I could feel. Unlike the hunk a junk tripp-lite cable, which slid into the connector and left you wondering if it was in properly. The worst part was the intermittent connection that the junk cable made. When I first connected it, my drive would not spin-up. I waited...and waited...and... 1/5 Mr.R - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Extremely poor fit on 9 pin side

This was my first Firewire cord, and I suspect the same is true of many of the positive reviewers here. Like them, I was originally very happy with this cord. It worked, and the price was fantastic. However, I noticed that the 9 pin connector was always very loose, and never "clicked" in place, even though I pushed the cord as far as it would go. My initial thought was "Boy, Firewire really has a bad connector design."Well, after buying another Firewire cord from a more reputable source (LaCie) I discovered that Firewire cables are actually incredibly secure! There is just something very wrong with the design of these cords! As far as I can tell, the connector is a bit too short on the 800 end of these cables, and thus they can't be inserted far enough to engage the mechanism that locks them into place (i.e. the 'click' you feel when plugging in a USB cable, or a better made Firewire cable, it turns out).As such, I recommend users stay far away from these... 2/5 Jonathan Birge (Belmont, MA) - See all my reviews, February 10, 2010

This review is from: Clear IEEE 1394 Firewire 800 to Firewire 800 Cable, 9 Pin/9 Pin Male / Male - 3 FT (Electronics) Great cable with no issues. Would recommend this brand and company to a friend (and to an enemy.) But note, I have received at least 3 emails from the company asking me to review it. So, yes, it's a great cable and I would buy another one from these people, but you may be hounded to review the cable repeatedly until you review it. So, buy the cable and quickly review it here or be annoyed for not having reviewed it until you do. Appears strong and I don't think cable stress will be a problem for a long time. Connector fits snugly into receptacle. Wiggle during data transfer results in no errors. Using it for an older Apple MacBook Pro and a hard drive. Also work fine when I "daisy-chain" devices.
