FireWire Disk Mode is a brilliant but little-known Macintosh-only feature that lets you turn one Mac into an external hard drive for ... Note: If both Macs have Apple's FireWire 800 jacks, use a 9-pin FireWire cable instead for much greater speed.

About this book
For a company that promised to "put a pause on new features," Apple sure has been busy-there's barely a feature left untouched in Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard." There's more speed, more polish, more refinement-but still no manual. Fortunately, David Pogue is back, with the humor and expertise that have made this the #1 bestselling Mac book for eight years straight. You get all the answers with jargon-free introductions to:Big-ticket changes. A 64-bit overhaul. Faster everything. A rewritten Finder. Microsoft Exchange compatibility. All-new QuickTime Player. If Apple wrote it, this book covers it.Snow Leopard Spots. This book demystifies the hundreds of smaller enhancements, too, in all 50 programs that come with the Mac: Safari, Mail, iChat, Preview, Time Machine.Shortcuts. This must be the tippiest, trickiest Mac book ever written. Undocumented surprises await on every page.Power usage. Security, networking, build-your-own Services, file sharing with Windows, even Mac OS X's Unix chassis-this one witty, expert guide makes it all crystal clear.

Connects old Sony DCR video camera to Mac with a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter as well

5/5 IanK - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter (Personal Computers) I needed to get a connection between an old Sony video camera (DCR-PC100 which must be about 15 years old) and my Mac computer that has USB and thunderbolt connectors. When I received this adapter, I discovered that the FireWire connection was FireWire 800. My old camera used FireWire 400. So then I needed an adapter to get me between FireWire 400 and 800. I thought that by the time I added all that together there was little hope that the camera would interface with the computer. But I was very pleasantly surprised and everything seems to work perfectly. So for old legacy video cameras, this is a good way to get things back in action. Sony DCR-TRV350 to iMac

In Feb 2010, I bought the cable to transfer video from my Sony DCR-TRV350 8mm camcorder to my iMac. IMovie only sometimes recognized the TRV350. When it did, iMovie promptly displayed a "Communication Error". I took the TRV350 camcorder and the 4pin/9pin Tripp Lite cable to the local Apple store. The MacBook Pro would not recognize the TRV350 after multiple attempts. The Apple store folks were kind enough to open a new 4pin/9pin white "Mac" cable right off their product wall to try out (Belkin brand). Importing worked perfectly with the "Mac" cable. I purchased the "Mac" Belkin cable, left the Apple store with a smile, and repeated the same success at home with my iMac. I rated this Tripp Lite cable 1-star since a different cable brand worked with my 2 devices while this Tripp Lite cable did not. In my situation, a different cable brand (Belkin) made all the difference.Update: I checked pin-out. The correct pin-outs are 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4. The Tripp Lite cable was... 1/5 S.H. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Camera wasn't recognized with this brand of cable.

This review is from: Tripp Lite FireWire 800 IEEE 1394b Hi-speed Cable (9pin/4pin) 6-ft.(F019-006) (Electronics) Ordinarily I have success with this brand, but not with this particular cable. I purchased to connect my Canon ZR800 video camera to my iMac. iMovie couldn't recognize the camera. I switched to another brand of cable and it was immediately recognized. Not sure if the pin configuration is incorrect as stated in an earlier review, but the applications for this cable are limited. You are taking a chance if you try this cable. Cheap but useful

Let's say you just bought a new Mac. And you realize it has a Firewire 800 slot. And you have a few Firewire 400 hardrive enclosures you'd rather not get rid of.Instead of going out and buying a new set of Firewire400 to Firewire800 cables to use with your mac and existing Firewire hard drives, this is the economical solution to your problems. Just buy this and you can continue to use your old FW400 cables and save yourself some money. The adapter has a FW400 slot at one end where you plug in your existing FW400 cable and a FW800 plug at the other end which you plug into your Mac's FW800 slot. The adapter itself is chunky, and is a tight fit in the slot right next to my mini DP to DVI adapter but it does fit and it works. There have been no random disconnects or data dropouts during my usage of the adapter to connect my external hard drives and transfer data to and from my mac.
