    Reliable, useful external hard drive!

5/5 Jaime (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/800 Portable External Hard Drive 34649 (Midnight Blue) (Personal Computers) This is a great external hard drive. I originally bought it to use as a Time Machine Back-up for my old MacBook Pro. It served its purpose well, and I never had any problems with it. I'm still using it, and said MacBook Pro is no more, so it outlasted my computer. My opinion is that if you treat it nicely, and don't drop it, you will have this little beauty for awhile. As of now, I use it for more of a general backup for important files. I like that it's small and flat, and slides in easily to my laptop case if I need to take it on the go. It's a smart choice to have a backup drive for important documents, pictures, or anything else you would be devastated to lose. This hard drive will fulfill your needs nicely. Realy great for a variety of uses

The best thing about this drive is the variety of connections that can be used. Some reviewers say it runs hot, but mine does not, even when I ran a disk utility program that looks for bad sectors , and it ran for more than 24 hours straight. Sure, it is warm, but not hot by any means. The drive is quiet, and although red is not my favorite color, it it a nice looking drive.I liked my first one so much, I bought a second one. I use one to hold photos when I am out in the field, since it is so much room, I have plenty of space to hold many shoots and work on the files, create slide shows, etc. I also store media files, podcasts, etc so they do not take up room on my laptop drive. All at firewire transfer speeds. The second one I partitioned and have a mac os on one so I can boot right from this drive in an emergency. I have all my application images and updates on another partition, so I can quickly install or recover anything I may have lost. This is a... 5/5 Puck (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great external hard drive

I bought this external hard drive after reading the reviews and specifications of many other external hard drives and I have to say that I am very pleased with it. I bought it for my Macbook Pro 13" and it has proven very useful and reliable and I have used it everyday for about 6 months.Pros:- No hassle of a power cord- Durable- Very Quiet- Sleek, slim, and light- 3 different types of connections with all cables included (USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800)- Firewire 800 transfer speed is blazing fast- 4 rubber feet provide quite a lot of traction- Is able to daisy chain with Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 compatible devicesCons:- Cost/storage space ratio is not as low as some other exHD's- Only 320 GB- Can get very hot (you can't even touch it)- Outside casing feels like plastic although it is aluminumMany reviews say that the faceplate of their units have detached, and... 5/5 nofearforme - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) You can remove the virtual dirve...easily

I haven't had it long, but so far it's a 5-star drive considering the cost per GB and the peace of mind from the drop protection. I also haven't had any problems with the connection yet, so we'll see how that holds up.The one reservation I had was the virtual CD partition. There should be no reservations. If you open the program in the virtual CD, there is a setting(under virtual CD tab) to show, hide, or remove the partition. You click the button and update. If you want the encryption(which I do) you either show it for use on multiple PCs or hide it if you're on one PC and don't want it to show up. If you don't want encryption, you remove it. It's that simple. Maybe this is an update, because I can't understand why everyone else is finding it so difficult - I discovered this in 30 seconds.Other than that, the drive has performed as fast as anything else on my USB 2.0 ports(unfortunately I don't have 3.0 on my dock yet) and looks nice enough to sit on my desk... 4/5 Chris W. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Reliable and travels well

I've had one of the eGo 500GB Iomega drives now for over a year. It's Red, with the rubber stretchy case to protect the drive from knocks and bumps. At first, yes I also experienced the very odd and annoying pre-installed software. Iomega needs to simply offer the drive without any of this software so that you don't have to jump through hoops to disable it. After reading a number of the other reviews, it's clear that most of the other reviewers really hated the software. After having gone on the site and removed it, then I was able to wipe the drive and use it the way I wanted to. It has been very reliable. It has traveled with me all over the U.S. and also on our last documentary trip to Peru. No problems. At one point I dumped everything on the drive and downloaded it to another drive, erased it, and started over with it as a portable drive to quickly transfer media. No problems. The drive is primarily used for dumping Flash media from our DSLR which creates large... 4/5 R. Shaw (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews, April 23, 2013

This is the improved eGo 500GB USB drive

Iomega's eGo 500GB portable USB HDD has been redesigned. When you purchase, make sure you are buying the new version.I bought this portable HDD specifically to back up my iTunes directory, which is approaching 300GB. I also own another Iomega 500 GB portable HDD, and when I ordered this one I thought I was getting another identical unit. This one has been updated, and apparently for the better. This one is shaped like a slightly large deck of cards rather than as a whiskey flask configuration like the older model. It also has nice little rubber feet. But the big improvement seems to be that it is somewhat thriftier regarding whether it could draw sufficient power from the USB ports. This unit easily functioned in one of my computers in which the USB port was insufficient to power the earlier model. I do not know if this is a quirk or whether Iomega improved the design.Further substantiating the theory that this unit is redesigned to be more... 5/5 Roger J. Iomega Rocks!

After using Simpletech and Western Digital drives of this type, there is absolutely no comparison in the quality of workmanship between the Iomega brand and the others. The case is solid metal and constructed with close fitting seams that make this a well designed and manufactured piece. I travel frequently and carry this device in my carry--on bag with my laptop and have not had any issues with seam separation or other visible defects. By accident my bag fell out of a chair onto the tile floor in the airport and I expected to see some damage to the unit and not a scratch or visible mark was evident, but my laptop did get some dings out of that fall. It takes rough handling much better than the Western Digital and Simpletech competing products. The only negative I have found with this drive is it will not run with only one USB port powering it and does require two. So when I have to hook up my USB aircard, mouse, phone charger, blue tooth device charger, I do have to pull out a... 5/5 Bad Dude (Florida) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Worked, for a time

Addendum: failed after a year and a half of very light use. Dropped to 2 stars.****It's small, seems sturdy, and is oddly pretty. It's very quiet. It's reasonably fast, but not a speed demon. I've had it in continuous use for a couple hours now (the first thing I do with any new disk is fill it to capacity, to see if there are going to be write errors), and it's barely warm to the touch.Things I don't like: 1. I wish the cord were a little longer. 2. On arrival, it was configured to allow me to create directories, but it rejected file creation at the root level. I decided I didn't like this setting, and after banging around in the disk's Security settings, I got it to behave as I liked. Preventing file creation at the root level might make sense for the boot disk of a system, but I'm not booting off of this and would rather not be told where I can put my files, thankyouverramuch. 3. Prior to this purchase, I had backed up my old Toshiba (about 40 GBs of data)on a USB 2.0 80 gig drive. It normally took about 10 hours. Amazing support!

I got this drive, and it was great. It was faster than I expected in 3.0, amazingly fast! Decently small size, it totally delivers. Now for the best part. The laptop I bought that this was to go with, died, it has been thru RMA after RMA. Which means the drive sat in my back pack. I had left the usb cable plugged into it, like a moron. When the laptop came back, I pulled the drive out, and it didn't work! I had broken the usb connector inside the case! I have some work stuff on this drive and could not send it out with that stuff still on there, and this drive is NOT made to be taken apart. So I pried the case open and removed the drive, doing some damage to the case in the process. I managed to get my data off the drive.I then figured I would try to contact iomega to just get a replacement for the usb controller board. I contacted them thru their online live chat function. I told them that I broke it, then I took it apart voiding the warranty. This is the exact quote from... 5/5 ShreddinPB - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
