Time is Money.

I'm a media professional. I work with a lot of RED footage, project files, and music. I need a reliable, fast, and portable drive to take with me on shoots to handle on site data transfers.Previously I had brought a 5400RPM Thunderbolt Drive with me on shoots and transferring 100 or so gigs of footage would take about 45 minutes to an hour. Sitting around and waiting for the footage to dump at the end of a long day is the last thing you want to do so I looked for other alternatives.I had a LaCie Rugged USB Thumbdrive that failed on me after about 2 months so I was hesitant to come back to the LaCie brand. But I said screw it, and went for it.And so far so good. It's survived a couple shoots and a few plane trips. It feels solid, and it's USB powered so it's truly portable. I haven't dropped it yet so I can't testify to it's durability in that regard. It's cut down data transfer speeds to "is this real life?" levels. 100 gigs takes 5-10... 5/5 El Duderino - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I'm a media professional. 5/5 Wilson A - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LaCie Rugged Triple USB 3.0 / Firewire 800 2TB Portable Hard Drive LAC9000448 (Personal Computers) Awesome! It was plug and go -- the Firewire makes it fast. Looks, feels and functions solid. I like the energy saving mode where it slows the fan(?) when the drive is on idle for awhile and it doesnʻt get hot. Unlike some others where the device starts to get really hot even with the fan on when connected for a long period.Worth its cost. One point, though, be sure to write down the serial number thatʻs on the box... before throwing it away. You will not find it on the device when you register it, unless you open the casing, which would break your manufacturerʻs warranty. This review is from: LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 2TB Portable Hard Drive STEV2000400 (Personal Computers) I had just transferred over about 500GB worth of music and video and it was working really fast. Couldn't have been happier. Then on the 3rd day of ownership it randomly said I unsafely ejected it, but it was still plugged in and sitting on the desk. Then it came back for an hour and worked normally. Then it randomly said unsafely ejected again. It hasn't worked from that point on. Drive is solid, cable not so much.

3/5 lostinintrospection - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LaCie Rugged Mini USB 3.0 / USB 2.0 4TB External Hard Drive (LAC9000633) With Ivation Compact Portable Hard Drive Case (Small) (Electronics) So I'm a photographer who spends a lot of time on the road and in rough areas. I picked this up before a trip to the southwest as I wanted something a little rugged. As for the drive itself, it works perfectly. Its taken a few small drops and still works good. The case thats included is great and an easy way to keep the drive and cable together. The port on the drive however has already almost failed the cable barely stays in with the plastic cover on the drive, without it the cable still slips out every once and a while. Kind of disappointed by that as I had high hopes for this drive. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , March 10, 2017

    Drive failed after 1.5 months

Ordered this hard drive because it has been rated to have a superior build quality and life expectancy. At first i was blown away by all the specs, waterproof, drop proof etc. I am a photographer and marketing specialist so these specs blew me away as I have had drives fail in the past and wanted to avoid having to pay to recover data and the stress that comes with it. When I received the drive everything seemed to be in tact. Sturdy drive, nice weight, good design quality. I began using the drive as my primary backup for the next few months. One morning I woke up to my drive not working which i found odd. I always store my drive in the case and in my desk (paranoia from having other drives fail lol). I spent the next few hours plugging and unplugging, googling and troubleshooting all websites around. Finally I gave up and called Amazon customer support. The representative was confused and "flabbergasted" that a LaCie drive known for its quality had failed only after 2 months... 1/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not as fast as lead to believe!

3/5 Country Girl (Alaska) - See all my reviews I purchased this drive specifically to run virtual OS's from. Having a Thunderbolt connection is exactly what I wished for the USB 3 is a bonus. I noticed however that performance was lacking and not as I expected. Taking a look at the hard drive installed I was sadly disappointed to find a SATA II 5400rpm drive with nothing better then an 8mb cache. Why have a fantastic connection to the computer and then cripple this device with an old, inexpensive, poor performing hard drive? For this reason alone I rate this device with only 3 stars. What a disappointment. Now I also get to purchase a new hard drive and install it so this enclose can perform as advertised. I feel greatly misled by the promised quick performance advertising Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? , September 7, 2014

1/5 Human Shopper - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Using this drive over thunderbolt and getting very poor speeds. Not asking a lot out of it, some non HQ pro res files and lesser and it just can't handle it. I have a couple thunderbolt non raid drives and this is by far the slowest of the bunch. This review is from: LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 1TB 9000488 With Ivation Compact Portable Hard Drive Case (Electronics) Wanted Thunderbolt for a Time Machine drive and rugged sounded good too. I can drop it from five feet up if it is not running so I feel confident about my backup being safe. I have another drive that uses USB3 and T-bolt is a lot faster, plus the T-bolt cable is built in and stows in the orange foam surrounding the edges of the unit. 5/5 William Menezes - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt & USB 3.0 2TB 9000489 (LAC9000489) With Ivation Compact Portable Hard Drive Case (Electronics) Some 0f the reviews say there are problems with the connectors become lose. I am using the thunderbolt interface and the connector is good. I have had the drive for a few weeks and it is doing good. I use it on my MBP early 2011, this had to have a new logic board that Apple installed, so it is able to provide enough power to the drive. I get a thruput rate of about 100G/hour using time machine for my backups. I think the limitation is from the thruput of the MBP HD. But it is about 3 times faster than backups to my 2013 time capsule over wifi. I have been doing my backups to that and it got full and needed to have a complete backup done and this would cause me to loose previous backups. so I got this 2TB drive to do backups.
