Promise Pegasus R6 12tb - 1000

Promise Technology Announces Pegasus2 and SANLink2 Thunderbolt 2 Products

  • The Pegasus2 R6 is available with either 2TB (12TB total) or 3TB (18TB total) hard drives, while the R8 will ship with 3TB (24TB total) and 4TB (32TB total) drives. These range from a 4-bay enclosure (R4) up to an 8-bay enclosure (R8), with the Pegasus2 R8. the Pegasus2 is also available in a 6-bay (R6) variant. Interesting to note is that Promise also has their SANLink2 product, which  is a portable bridge with dual 8Gbps Fibre Channel ports and dual 20Gbps Thunderbolt 2 ports. Pricing has not been revealed, but the new Pegasus2 products will be available at the Apple store in November and will either replace or augment the existing Promise Thunderbolt offerings. As discussed previously, Thunderbolt 2 effectively doubles the transfer rate of Thunderbolt, up to 20Gbps. This allows the use of the new Thunderbolt-enabled systems with existing high-speed Fiber Channel SANs (e. g. the Promise VTrak x30).

    Super fast and reasonably quite.

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:00 MinsConfigured it to Raid 50 (dual Raid 5). Getting on average 640mb write / 580mb read.Compared to my late 2013 Macbook Pro internal SSD speed of 420mb write / 480mb read.I prefer RAID 50 over RAID 5 as I get better read performance and less risk, it can survive multiple disk failures. The fan noise/sound is very good. Its not a problem at all.It sleeps and wakes up with your Mac. None of that "Disk not properly ejected".Please note. Im using Thunderbolt 1 port. I will update this review once I receive my new Mac Pro with a Thunderbolt 2 connection.(Using Blackmagicdesgin Disk Speed Test Ver 2.2. Great Drives, Not So Great Techhnical Support

I bought two of these to go with my late 2013 Mac Pro. They are nearly silent, fast as lightening, and much cooler than the R1 with 6 drives. I have the 1 TB solid drive on the Mac. Of course it is way too small to store movies, pictures, documents, etc, so I'm using one of the RAIDS as the main hard drive. I put the applications and the video I'm working on on the 1 TB drive. The RAIDs are so fast, I suspect I can leave the videos on the RAID and get pretty much the same speed as the Mac disk. You need to be patient with Promise support. When my old R6 lost a drive after 3 years I called their technical assistance and they didn't know what specs I needed for the drives, but advised me to buy a $220 drive that the unit ships with. this didn't make a lot of sense to me as one of the drives failed so quickly. He referred me to sales saying he didn't know the specs. The sales guy said just buy any drive that will fit and the RAID would handle it. I found the specs of the old... 4/5 Mark E. Satisfies a Photographers' Need For Speed

I have more than 100 hard disk drives and arrays laying around. It's the bane of my existence. Everywhere I step there are hard drives and cables. I've tried, used and owned just about every brand of hard drive system in use. I like many of them. I just need to get rid of the rest, but I LOVE the PROMISE Pegasus R6. Here's why...The LightPeak technology that provides the underpinnings of Thunderbolt is amazing. Thunderbolt isn't widely adopted and it's expensive, but there's no chance anyone would deny it's very, very fast. It's faster than USB 3.0 or Firewire 800.The R6 supports multiple RAID configurations. It comes RAID 5 right out of the box and ready to connect to your Mac. There are a few things you should know right off the bat. The drive doesn't come with a cable. At this price, that's almost criminal. So have a Thunderbolt cable ready if you want to use the R6 on arrival. The next thing you should know is that it takes about 10 hours for the drive to... 5/5 Scott Bourne "Scott Bourne" (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews This review is from: Promise Technology R6 Enclosure with 6x2TB SATA Drives Power Cable, Product CD and Quick Start Guide (PR602US) (Personal Computers) I have more than 100 hard disk drives and arrays laying around. Works, but reliability, software and service are well below expectations.

Drive's documentation starts with instructions to perform two software updates - one for Mac, one for Pegasus. Maybe it is a coincidence, but after this particular OS update, my iMac now hangs to grey screen (have to do hardware reset). Before I could do software updates though, I needed for iMac to recognize the drive - it did not work out of the box. Call to tech support helped - the issue was cable connection on iMac side. Phone tech support person was knowledgeable, but surely rushed. If you ran into this problem, try a different cable or reverse cable's direction. Make sure dim thunderbolt light (below blue power light on the front panel) is on.Within a week, one of six drives has failed. This is consistent with the experience of other reviewers on Apple's site. Advanced replacement was shipped a day later than expected. It has been a week since I got the drive and I am still not able for the enclosure to completely accept the new drive and clear red error... 3/5 Jim Bell - See all my reviews This review is from: Promise Technology R6 Enclosure with 6x2TB SATA Drives Power Cable, Product CD and Quick Start Guide (PR602US) (Personal Computers) Drive's documentation starts with instructions to perform two software updates - one for Mac, one for Pegasus. Fast, but there is a caveat

0 4/5 J. Samuel (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews This review is from: Promise Technology R6 Enclosure with 6x2TB SATA Drives Power Cable, Product CD and Quick Start Guide (PR602US) (Personal Computers) The R6 is blazing with Final Cut. There is, however, one major caveat. Although the array will accept 3TB drives and will seemingly function, configurations above 12TB are unstable and you will eventually lose all of your data. Promise does not represent that the R6 can go beyond the 6 X 2TB stock setup, so this should not count against it. Nevertheless, everyone should be aware that 12TB is currently a hard limit for stable operation. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 29, 2011

Flaky drives, terrible tech support, but a good device

0 4/5 Matt Beam "matt beam" (chicago) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Promise Technology R6 Enclosure with 6x1TB SATA Drives Power Cable, Product CD and Quick Start Guide (PR601US) (Personal Computers) Two of the drives failed within 48 hours of first power-up. The tech support provided by Promise was not impressive. They kept referring me to their support website- which is terrible. In the end, they replaced both drives (eventually), and the unit is working fine now.Bottom line: if you need fast, fault-tolerant Thunderbolt storage, this is one of the best solutions available. Just pray nothing goes wrong. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 31, 2012

    Blazingly Fast!

0 5/5 Rocky LaRochelle - See all my reviews This review is from: Promise Technology R6 Enclosure with 6x1TB SATA Drives Power Cable, Product CD and Quick Start Guide (PR601US) (Personal Computers) This system is ready out of the box to give you blazingly fast IO. Just plug it in, hook it to the Thunderbolt port (cable isn't included, you'll need to get one from Apple) and off you go. On my 2011 iMac i5 I get 450 MB/s (measured with AJA System Test). while the internal 1TB hard drive comes in at 118 MB/s. I highly recommend this Raid for video editing or any application where IO throughput is important. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 28, 2011

This review is from: Promise Technology R6 Enclosure with 6x1TB SATA Drives Power Cable, Product CD and Quick Start Guide (PR601US) (Personal Computers) My last external drive system was too slow for my needs. As the only thunderbolt RAID system at the time of purchase this was my only choice. I went with the R6, for the 3-5 year storage needs. Make sure to install the Utility so that your device keeps up to date with firmware. The initial firmware had lower temperature thresholds & was throwing warnings. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 20, 2013
