Working, but beware of bad sectors; always keep backups!

I received this drive 8 months ago and it is still working in an acceptable manner by my standards. For more details, please continue reading.Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors.I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents... 4/5 Milos Ivanovic (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Died during backup after less than 2 hours.

I was pleased to initially get this backup HDD, it is small, portable, clean design, with a nice black color. It was packed in an easy to open and protective box and the basic instructions were simple and clear, plug the HDD into your computer with the accompanying cord and download the Seagate Dashboard application to begin backing up. I did just that, and initially seemed to be up to a great start. The Dashboard app isn't fancy, but appeared to be sufficient to get the job done. However, fast forward about 2 hours to ~80% backed up, and the HDD starts to occasionally beep. I was not aware the drive had any speakers so inititally I figured I had heard something outside my house. Gradually over the next 10 minutes the beeping became more and more frequent until it was obvious they were coming from the drive and were coming out about every second. I also noticed at this point the drive was no longer backing up. Thinking something was amiss, I unplugged the drive, restarted... 1/5 Amazon Addict (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) very fast drive with huge 4TB capacity

This Seagate drive is a phenomenal backup drive. It really is FAST! It's so fast because internally it's composed of two hard drives running in parallel in a RAID 0 configuration to give twice the throughput. It comes formatted in NTFS. Mac users who want to keep using it with NTFS will need to go to Seagate's website to download an NTFS-for-Mac program by Paragon to be able to write to this drive. It's a free program on the Seagate site. Alternatively, Mac users could format the drive to Mac's native "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" file format (also known as HFS+ format). If you want to share this HFS+ formatted drive with a PC, you can install an HFS-for-Win program on your PC to enable read/write capability on Mac drives. This HFS-for-Win program is also available for free on the Seagate support site. There are definite advantages of NTFS over HFS+. NTFS gives slightly higher sequential read/write speeds than HFS+, but where NTFS shines is it... 5/5 StevieQ (Castro Valley, CA United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Drive Great Speed

This is a great drive. I just purchased my 4th one and haven't had any issues with the sleep problem everyone is talking about (I'm running a PC, Windows 7). I Don't run seagates software however so don't know if this is contributing to the issue (Tech support in another review stated this feature was adjustable or could be turned off via there seagate dashboard software). Speed is greaaaattt. I can keep a consistent transfer speed above 90 MB (Usually resides around 98 MB/S with peaks of 112MB), and I can achieve this between two of them on the Same USB3.0 controller (Using a USB 3.0 Hub). I use all types of drives from all the manufacturers, and Honestly, I normally haven't been impressed with Seagate in the past, however this unit is just rock solid, fast, consistent, and easy to install. One caveat I ran across is installing more than 1 of the same drives on your computer can sometimes be difficult as it uses the same identifier to Windows Drive Management, so... 5/5 longtimereader - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 50/50 chance 1 TB STAC1000101 will work

Bought one of these at Best Buy, the other at OfficeMax around Labor Day taking advantage of price match & deals.I have a new Dell XPS 8300, Windows 7 64-bit OS, I5-2400 CPU & 8GB of ram. The drives are connected to a Buffalo Tech USB 3.0 PCI-E card with two ports.Drive #1 (made in China) bought at OfficeMax screamed out of the gates in file transfers from SATA3 & SATA2 internal drives in my computer via USB 3.0. I transferred a single 6 GB file in less than a minute. Transferred the same size file from an external SATA2 Hitachi using an eSata cable out to my Dell in just slightly more time (1:08).However, the more files and varying sizes you transfer at one time does affect (slows) performance speed. So there is some give & take here and perhaps that is to be expected.Drive goes to "sleep" and comes out without any of the other reported problems you may have read.BTW # 1: I have disabled all of the installed software that came... 4/5 late night fan (los angeles) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Serious problems with the 3TB USB 3 GoFlex Drive

I bought 3 at the same time thinking that what can be wrong!I was able to copy 2.5 TB from a friend drive to one of these 3 drives. It took about 2 days but this was very fast because it took 2.5 days when I copied the same to a 3TB WD drive.I was able to use the first drive for karaoke once in a while in the first 2 months. Then suddenly I could no longer see the drive in Windows (This PC has Windows 7, 32-bit). Since then I could never get the drive to work except for a single time when it was recognized but hung quickly while a video file was being played. At that time, I couldn't shut down Windows without unplugging the drive power. All other times, I could see the left most LED on but the drive did not even seem to run.For the second drive, I wanted to use it to back up a 0.5 TB system image of another PC that had Windows 7 64-bit. The Windows backup ran for 2 days but I could see that not much data was copied so I cancelled the backup thinking... 1/5 Christopher Chu - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Format this drive first to avoid issues with this drive!!

I was expecting this drive to be like a spare drive to back up files and store data on and allow me to edit some files as I wanted. I really was expecting it to work just like a jump drive does, but have a lot more storage space. I didn't want to have to plug it into a wall, you know, portable. I wanted to be able to take it to several computers I have at home and at work. What I found out after I placed my order was that these drives by Seagate have pre-installed software on them that once connected to your computer will ask you to load, after a two minute wait. If you install this software "Dashboard" and whatever else is there, you may have some of the issues like all of the other negative ones I read. YOU DON'T NEED THIS SOFTWARE, SO DO NOT INSTALL IT!!! Seagate must think that the only purpose to buy this drive is to do a back-up on one computer and to have it auto run every so often, hence their software. I personnaly am not interested in their software, especially... 3/5 lasfk - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Plenty of space for all your files

I've tried out 3 Seagate GoFlex portable hard drives - the GoFlex Pro Ultra Portable (500gb), the GoFlex Slim (320gb), and the GoFlex Ultra Portable (1TB). I have been happy with all 3 of them actually. I initially had the 500gb but it was getting too full and I decided to try out the 1TB. The 1TB has plenty of space for all my files with plenty of room to spare. It comes with 2 versions of backup software plus some trial versions of programs for syncing and sharing files. Between my 3 Seagate hard drives, I have tried out both of the backup programs included on these hard drives, but since my 1TB is mostly used for extra space I have chosen to just copy files to it manually. I'm very set in my ways and this is how I've always backed up files, whether to another hard drive or to CDs or DVDs so this is what I do on this hard drive. I've used the backup software on my GoFlex Slim though since I am primarily using it for backup and the backup software is easy to use. Great drive. Skip the backup software.

I've been really pleased with this back up my drive. It's small and sleek looking and operates quickly. My only gripe is the Memeo back up software that it comes with. It's set to constantly track changes on your machine so that it know what files to back up. That's nice... I guess... but it seems to be tracking lots of files that don't matter. A little window will pop up from the tool bar (I use XP), telling me that I have something like 3,000 files to back up after only a few weeks have gone by! I have to assume that some of those are temporary files... or perhaps individual email messages from my Outlook file. The pathetic thing is that the software won't tell you which files they are. Instead it just tells you that you have a pending back up for your "My Documents" folder, and in my case, my Outlook file. I want more details than that! (For awhile I was really worried that I had a virus on my computer because the number of pending files to backup seemed outrageous).
