Staying with Seagate over the years,,

I was introduced to Seagate about 2001 when I needed to replace the 'whopping big' 13½GB hard drive in my first computer, an IBM early model pc. I chose a 160 GB Seagate and it functioned perfectly until the 1999 Sony was retired. I also have a Seagate "Expansion" 3TB hard drive that is loaded with my entire film library of over 1400 titles. I bought this Seagate principally to back up my two computers every week via their "Windows Easy Transfer" function. I was especially pleased to get it for a most modest cost. Placed in use, I find that it still has over 1.4TB remaining, so I intend to load it with my 50+ operas and classical music selections. Additionally I have a Seagate 500GB FreeAgent external hard drive my computer tech sold me to use for genealogical work. I am editing my previous glowing review for Seagate. I bought a 3 TB model from the company and it came in a box just slightly larger than the drive's factory box and having room on one side for an inch layer of styrofoam... 5/5 Charles Scott PA (Hutchinson, Kansas) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive ST310005FDA2E1-RK (Silver) (Personal Computers) I got this HDD for a really good price. I was told it was 500gb but it ended up being a TB. (nice)....when I got it I thought it was broken because it didn't turn on. But I found out the charger had 2 parts. the prongs snapped into the block. so I put a rubber band around it to push the prongs and the block tighter together and now it works. the only other problem (Really easy fix) is the usb was the old slow kind so my xbox games would frees here and there. But I just put a faster 2.0 usb on it and it works fine. (2.0 are the most common...they cost ablout 1-99c) Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 31, 2015

    Bargain price, bargain features

This drive does what it's supposed to, store lots of files cheaply with minimum hassle. No weird unremovable software like Western Digital drives. I repartitioned and reformatted as HFS+ for Mac and got the full 2TB (by Snow Leopard's accounting). You do have to change the partition type to GUID or APM instead of MBR, as other commenters have mentioned, which Apple makes frustratingly non-obvious in Disk Utility. This is true for any drive that comes partitioned/formatted for Windows, so it's not really Seagate's fault, Apple is the one who invented their own partition method and they should make their own disk partitioning software easier to use. This drive is sort of quiet, although you definitely notice when it spins up/down and when it's being accessed. The whole front panel of dots glows a soft white light when in use. Sort of unnecessary, but not offensive, except if total darkness is important to you.Two things make it kind of... 4/5 501(c)Geek (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) utterly useless protection

I am writing this review from my tablet, because a friend got hacked, my address was on her drive, and I got attacked. (Kaspersky reported 129 network attacks thwarted, but they must have missed 1).I have been doing daily backups to this drive for 4 years, thinking it was working flawlessly...and it was, the problem being that if you lose everything and need to restore after reformatting, you can not because Seagate writes in its own language incompatible with the native OS...so windows restore couldn't pick it up. After 30 hours (no joke) of rebuilding, I could see but not restore my files.Remembering that I had copied the install to the drive, I reinstalled Seagate desk drive and...it treated it as an unlicensed copy. Going to Seagate support got me a trial that would back up but not restore, or it would, but for $99. In fact whatever I did brought up a $99 solution. I have to say that it feels like extortion....and I will rebuild rather than pay to... 1/5 E.Swope (Windward Oahu, HI USA) - See all my reviews, December 29, 2012

    Nope.

This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive ST305004FDA1E1-RK (Personal Computers) Don't buy this. We backed all of our files up on this, then our computer broke making the Seagate the only place our files were. When we got the new computer and tried to upload the files from the Seagate to the new computer, it wouldn't work. The Seagate croaked! A tech expert tried to retrieve the files, but said it couldn't be done. In talking to other friends who have external drives, they say they are unreliable. Certainly we wouldn't have made this our only source of files by choice. It was our unfortunate circumstance that all sources for files were lost at the same time. So, my word of advice is that if you use ANY storage device, make sure you have your important files backed up in multiple places. Avoid Seagate -- Buyer Beware

1/5 Henry C. Kevane (San Francisco, California USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive ST305004FDA1E1-RK (Personal Computers) Absolutely run away as fast as you can from anything made by Seagate. The entire purpose of buying an external hard drive is to find a reliable, permanent place to store photos and documents. Yet, after assiduously storing digital content to this drive over many years, it suddenly stopped working. The cost to repair: $1,800 -- almost 10 times the initial cost of the hardware! And then, guess what? The date could not be recovered. So, a decade of photos lost forever. Thank you Seagate. This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent 750 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive ST307504FDB1E1-RK (Personal Computers) We use these drives to back up our servers. These drives run for many hours a day in our server room. We have 8 of the 500 GB drives and 8 of the 1 TB drives. The 500 GB drives have been in service for several years. Prior to the Segate drives we had several USB-attached drives of other brands that failed under the heavy use. We have had no failures with the Segate drives.
