Similar to adding an internal drive. Worry about heat. Product info needs to be more than just "It just works"

NOTE: Amazon has combined the reviews for the 1TB, 2TB and 3TB versions of this product, with the 3TB version dominating the negative reviews (as of 2012-11-24), so pay attention to which version is being reviewed. The target market of the Seagate Expansion Desktop line seems to be people who want to add a performance drive, but don't want to, or cannot, install an additional internal drive, that is, this is a drive they won't be moving, at least not frequently. For example, a laptop where the extra storage can happily stay behind in the office. Or a small-form-factor PC (mini-PC, HTPC, "nettop") that doesn't have space. There are other lines of external drives from Seagate (and others) targeting more transient/mobile uses. For a range of potential buyers of this drive, the product information provided may be too sketchy. The focus of this review is to fill in some of the missing info, and it is structured to facilitate your skipping details that don't interest... 4/5 Douglas B. (3.5 stars) Back-up your files, now! A good option for backup or other intermittent use

THE QUICK TAKE: The Seagate Expansion 2TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive STBV2000100 is a good option as a backup drive, or as an expansion drive that isn't used intensively. It may also serve well as a working drive that's used more intensively but for temporary or replaceable files - such as a scratch drive or a media server. This drive is large enough and priced low enough that you can backup multiple computers for not a lot of money. However, if you're looking for an expansion drive - a second drive to augment a laptop or desktop - that you will use intensively, consider options with cooling and perhaps backup, especially if you will use the drive for your only copy of files.A DESKTOP DRIVE: This is a desktop drive, not a truly portable drive. You could use it to backup multiple computers around a home or office, but you're not going to enjoy carrying the drive and the power supply.A FAST CONNECTION: USB 3.0 really is fun to use, if... 4/5 Snap, Crackle and Pop (United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Seagate Expansion 2TB 3.5-Inch Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STBV2000100) (Personal Computers) Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) Nothing New But The Firmware

Summary* Same internal drive as the old version* Runs just as hot as the old external drive (in my testing)* APM is now turned off by default - this might be huge, people online have blamed this feature for the grinding noises and premature death of some seagate drives* Firmware update from CC9D to CC9E (CC9H firmware is available online)* Looks a little better* Not worth more than the old version imoEdit #2: When I used the Serial Number from Crystaldiskinfo to check the warranty (google "Seagate Warranty Checker") it showed that my drive was under warranty until the end of August 2013. That's almost 14 months, which still isn't long, but make sure you check online and do not just assume your warranty is dead after 12 months exact.I needed another 3tb drive and decided to go out on a limb and spend the extra $10 on this "new version" of the seagate drive.I will admit that at least the case looks different - its... 3/5 RandomGibberish - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Got backup?

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:56 MinsIn an age where more and more of our precious memories and records are completely digital, it is crazy not to make backups of your data, so you might want to consider the Seagate 4TB Backup Plus External Hard Drive as a part of your backup strategy. In the box you get the drive itself, a power brick, a USB 3.0 cable, and a quick-start guide.Note that the drive's case is plastic, with sharp edges and corners, so it's not meant to be a portable backup solution -- it's meant to sit on your desk. Also note that the unit does not have an on/off switch -- it's always ready for backup. There are PC and Mac versions -- if you are comfortable formatting a hard drive, then one tip is to pick whichever PC/Mac version of the desired capacity is cheaper, then format the drive for your particular computer. For example, I chose the PC version of this drive since it was cheaper than the Mac version, then formatted it using my Mac laptop so... 5/5 Kendall Giles (Richmond, VA USA) - See all my reviews, April 2, 2014

    Solid performer

0 5/5 Socal resident (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive with Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (STDT2000100) (Personal Computers) I bought this in-store somewhere else but had to leave a review since the only other review says nothing about the performance of the item (and their issue I'm guessing was due to user error). This is a solid performer with a bunch of bonus features. I have it hooked up to my wireless router that is shared between both PCs and MACs. We also have our mobile devices uploading images and whatnot directly to the hard drive. Can't speak to longevity since I've only had it a short while but feature and performance wise straight out of the box, it's been great. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 15, 2014

    It cooks breakfast too. :)

There are so many Vine reviews (free samples to selected users provided by the manufacturer) for these drives that I felt it necessary to write a review even though I have not yet purchased one from Amazon. I started out with a single 3TB drive of the prior (V1) generation of this family that had the removable base but that failed the Seatools drive self test with too many bad sectors reallocated after less than a year. Seagate sent a a reconditioned V1 drive that died in less than a week after I had restored over 2.5 terabytes of data saved to other devices. While I was waiting for another V1 model to ship Seagate offered to send a V2 drive instead since they didn't have stock for the V1 and I agreed to that. I have since purchased another 3TB V2 model at a local big box store and now sync the two drives using the FreeFileSync program to reduce the risk of losing 3TB of data.So what's the issue? In a word it's "heat".I've left comments on other user reviews... 3/5 ramjet73 (Honolulu) - See all my reviews This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Desktop External Hard Drive for Mac with Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (STDU4000100) (Personal Computers) There are so many Vine reviews (free samples to selected users provided by the manufacturer) for these drives that I felt it necessary to write a review even though I have not yet purchased one from Amazon. Be careful with this drive and software

Note: Dec 2013 Update follows the initial review===============================================================I bought the 3 TB drive to back up my Dell XPS 15 750MB hard drive as well as to store my ever increasing inventory of video files. It seamed like a great price for $149The hard drive came with Seagate software called Dashboard for backing up user document files. It was easy and worked well. It created a backup of my document directory and gave me the option for having both added or changed files updated at a time of my choosing. What happened next was more of a Microsoft issue than Seagate. When trying to use Windows 7 backup to create a disc image on the Seagate, it kept failing halfway through giving me error messages. This happened to me before on other large external hard drives over 2TB, so I thought I would fix it by partitioning the drive into a 750GB and 2.25TB drives. I then tried to back it up on the 750GB partition but had... 3/5 James M. Koury (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews, June 20, 2012

Tons of ROOM! (A Review for People Who only want the Space)

I understand that there's some back and forth over whether or not this unit is compatible with Windows Backup (due to sector sizes and blah, blah, blah). I don't use Windows Backup and have no intention to do so (I like to keep track of my files myself), therefore, I can't comment on the compatibility issue one way or the other. Other reviewers have also commented on the the Seagate Dashboard...I haven't used it either. So, you might be wondering why I'm bothering with this review.I'm writing this for one reason...all I wanted was oodles of storage space, and this External HDD delivers in spades.Seagate has been the only brand of External HDD I've ever used, and every drive I've purchased has functioned as intended (even my first Seagate External HDD, a 120gb model that's nearly 10 years old now, still works to this day). Compatible with my GoFlex FW800 and other adapters, Speedy

I have been happy with my 3TB GoFlex drive for keeping my active iTunes Library and other multimedia files. I was backing it up onto a 2TB GoFlex to store off-site where it would be safe, until 2TB was too small to hold everything. For a while I split the backup across a pair of 2TB drives, but wanted to give one of the 2TB to my daughter for college. I have a multitude of portable Seagate GoFlex drives as well, and none have failed me yet. So I bought the new 3TB Backup Plus so I could simply clone the 3TB iTunes drive in one step.I used the Mac OSX Lion Disk Utility to re-partition the Drive as "HFS+ Journaled", instead of the NTFS that it came formatted with. Then I did a test and copied a 16GB folder to it and it was pretty speedy (under 10 minutes on an old iMac). But this time I installed the Seagate software for the extra features, which I never did before with my other Seagate drives. BAD IDEA. I couldn't clone my first drive without the receiving drive... 4/5 L. Ganz (Colorado Springs, CO United States) - See all my reviews, June 18, 2012

This external drive lives in the plainest of black plastic cases. On the front is an all white Seagate logo and next to that a small green LED power/busy light. Plug it in and you'll find few files stored in it. A back-up utility, some set-up files, user guides and not much else. Just a lot of empty space. No stands, no back-lit logos, no extra inputs. On the back you'll find a power input and a USB 3 jack. In the box you'll find the USB cable and power adapter that plug into those jacks, as well as a quick start sheet and warranty card all packed in eco-friendly packaging. This is as simple and plain as it gets.I started by plugging this into a netbook running Windows 7. Windows recognized it immediately and asked if I'd like to use it as a back-up drive which I did. It was easy and problem-free.The Seagate Expansion hard drive is set-up for Windows computers, but if you're willing to take a minute to reformat it, it'll work fine for Apple users too... 5/5 Rex Kullmann (South Florida) - See all my reviews, August 10, 2011

Disappointed - Seagate Expansion 2 TB USB 3.0 Desktop Exernal Hard Drive STAY2000102

First of all, a big thumbs-up for Amazon's return policy - without it I would have been kicking myself for purchasing this hard drive. 5 Stars plus for Amazon! Now on the hard drive. It arrived on a Thursday. The physical appearance was appealing, and the size was great. The USB 3 connector on the unit looked distorted, but the cable was plugged in with no problem. Eagerly I plugged it into my ASUS desktop with Windows 7 64-bit, and kept my fingers crossed - had read so many reviews about the clicking sound and DOA, and wished mine would not be like that. Alas, nothing happened - nothing bad that was. The drive showed up immediately on the desktop and there was no clicking sound. I renamed it and transferred a few files to it, everything looked good. So I decided to put it under some stress test by mobilizing Norton Security Suite to backup my C and D drives (combined about 800 GB) and transferring about 300 GB of digital movies at the same time from another... 1/5 Starkid (NJ) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Expansion 2 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STAY2000102 (Personal Computers) First of all, a big thumbs-up for Amazon's return policy - without it I would have been kicking myself for purchasing this hard drive. 5 Stars plus for Amazon! Now on the hard drive. It arrived on a Thursday. The physical appearance was appealing, and the size was great. The USB 3 connector on the unit looked distorted, but the cable was plugged in with no problem. I formatted the drive, removing all of Seagate's pre-installed software and proceeded to copy over 50 GBs of music. This took approximately an hour, at a speed of 16 mb/s over USB 2.0; not blazing fast, but acceptable. So far, rattling aside, it seemed to be a reasonable product. I was going to test USB 3.0 when I copied the files back to my PC after a fresh Windows 7 install. I unhooked it from my computer and removed the power cable to turn the drive off.The enclosure never powered back on. It was not asleep -- it was dead. No amount of unplugging and replugging the power cord back in would bring it back. The only option to get my data... 3/5 Nicholas E. Johansen (USA) - See all my reviews, August 26, 2011
