Texas student dies after swallowing a bag of meth

  • After finding a small amount of marijuana as well as pipes and drug paraphernalia in the car, the deputy arrested Richardson and Keife. The Daily Mail  notes  that Keife drove the car for about a mile after the deputy initially began flashing his lights. resident died after consuming a baggie of methamphetamine when police pulled over the car in which was a passenger, reports The Beaumont Enterprise. At some presumably panicked point before the traffic stop, Richardson swallowed the baggie of meth. Things began to go very badly for Richardson by the time police had brought her to jail a few minutes later. She was pronounced dead at 4:30 a. m. on July 6. On Friday, a Washington County sheriff’s deputy pulled the car over at 2:45 p. m. on U. S. 290 about 70 miles northwest of Houston.

Which brand of external hard drive do you recommend?

I would like to get an external hard drive for my downloaded movies. Which brand would you recommend? I was looking at a 4 TB Western Digital My Book Essential eternal hard drive at Staples.com. Is that a good choice?

Yes it is a good choice...

Is it safe to run two to four 3 TB Western Digital My Book Essentials at once on one desktop computer?

I'll be connecting them to "PCI-e to USB 3.0" expansion cards. Is that safe? Do I need addtional power supplies to supply power to the expansion cards in order to power the My Book Essential hard drives that are connected to them? One more question. Is it OK to connect and disconnect My Book Essential hard drives from the computer regularly? I will be doing this if running 2-4 of them together is not a desirable option.

It is safe. They are not drawing power from the PC's power supply, they have external power sources. Before you disconnect the drives during the time your computer's OS is running, you should "eject" the drive by clicking the arrow next to the drive name in your file manager, or right-click it and select "eject".

Take Control of Your Wi-Fi Security

Creator: Glenn Fleishman, Adam C. Engst | Computers - 2007

The book is a marvel of excellent technical writing for a general audience." --Barry Campbell on Blogcritics.org Read this book to learn the answers to questions like: Should I worry about someone eavesdropping on my home wireless network?

Publisher: TidBITS

About this book
Learn how to keep intruders out of your wireless network and protect your sensitive communications! It's ten o'clock--do you know who's using your wireless network? If you haven't changed the default network name or admin password someone could be eavesdropping on your email, plucking your passwords out of the air, or sending spam through your Internet connection right now! When you're using a wireless network--whether a Macintosh with AirPort gear or Windows with any Wi-Fi equipment--you're exposed to risk unless you take steps. Wireless networking experts Glenn Fleishman and Adam Engst have spent years researching and covering wireless security issues on Glenn's Wi-Fi Networking News blog and in two editions of The Wireless Networking Starter Kit. Now they've distilled that experience into this essential guide for anyone using a computer with wireless networks, whether at home, at work, or on the road. You'll learn how to evaluate your real security risks; the best way to restrict access to your network using WPA and WPS; how to secure your data in transit with PGP, SSL, SSH, and VPNs; and how to protect your computers from viruses and attacks. The book provides extra advice on how to secure small-office wireless network, including details on choosing VPN hardware and software and on setting up 802.1X for secure Wi-Fi logins. "The authors, two guys with enormous geek credibility, take the confusing tangle of Wi-Fi security issues and break it down for you in plain language. The book is a marvel of excellent technical writing for a general audience." --Barry Campbell on Blogcritics.org Read this book to learn the answers to questions like: Should I worry about someone eavesdropping on my home wireless network? What three security measures should I take immediately to lock down my wireless gateway? What common security measures aren't worthwhile? Why is WEP not worth bothering with, and what should I use instead? How do I set up guest networking on the 2009 dual-band AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule models? How do I set up WPS on Apple and non-Apple gear? What does it mean if I see green shading in my browser's URL field? Do I need a VPN to protect my sensitive work communications? What is sidejacking, and what should I do about it? Can I control access to my wireless network by user name and password? What software can I use for secure email and file transfer? How does public-key encryption work? Our office has only 15 people--can we afford the best Wi-Fi security?

Extremely flimsy usb3 connector design - BUYER BEWARE

This applies to the My Book USB3 2TB drive.First the good stuff -It is a nice fast drive. HDTune showed and average speed around 90-100MB/s when connected to a USB3 port on my Lenovo W510 laptop. That is why I bought the thing, and it works well. I had NO trouble accessing the drive (but then I reformatted it completely and did not see any issues with the CD partition etc..).Note: I needed to update the USB3 drivers on my W510 to get it to be recognized consistently by Windows 7. That is likely an issue with the Win7 NEC USB3 drivers preinstalled on my Lenovo, and nothing to do with the WD drive. Now the awful part:After about 4 months of usage, the USB3 female connector in the cabinet came loose - and was stuck to the USB3 cable when I removed it!I have owned close to ten different WD external USB drives from ~320GB and up to 2TB drives. How to set up your WD My Book Essential 3TB 3.0 USB drive

I have six of these drives. I have had no serious problems to date, the oldest I've owned for about four months now. I will return to edit this review should a drive fail in the future.UPDATE: I wrote the above in October 2011. Writing now in October 2012, I now have eight of these drives. No problems to date.SECOND UPDATE: Writing now in November 2013. I have nine of these drives at this point. No problems to date. Here is my recommendation for how to set up the drive, out of the box. I've done this a bunch of times now, so I'm getting routine at it, and thought I'd write it out for others. Some caveats, for what it might be worth:--I am running Windows 7 64-bit.--I use both 3.0 and 2.0 connectivity, depending on the computer I hook these up to.--I have no use for the included backup software, so I can't speak to that. There are 2TB drives out there for less money and if all you need is a huge space, you might consider one of those. The value added in this package is the backup software that is bundled with the drive (actually, delivered right on the drive).WD Smartware is a backup/restore suite that, once installed, boots with your machine. If the MyBook is attached via your USB port, it will constantly monitor activity and make backups accordingly in the background in near real time without any action on your part. It also maintains multiple generations of files (you choose how many), so you can go back to, say, three versions ago if you need to recover a spreadsheet or other data file. You can also use it on multiple computers. Backups are stored under folders with the same name as the PC they're created on.I tested on a Win XP Pro laptop and a Win7 laptop and detected no system slowdowns at all. 0 4/5 m1234 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A to Micro-B Cable in Blue 6 Feet (Personal Computers) i bought this for my seagate 1tb backup plus hdd hookup to my ps3 because the stranded one is about 17 inches which is too close to it. it has faster read speed it got about 28 mb/s read speed the write speed is about the same as i get with the stranded 3.0 i do not have 3.0 usb ports so these may be faster for people with them. its fits pretty will the miro b to the hard drive not a glove fit and i like it a lot i think the same cord in my local retail stores is about 34.99 .since i bought it, i have had a minor problem with the cord when it gets bent the transfer either stops or slows down so much that playing a video look like your watching it in slow motion. so if you plan to place a connection in a curved location it will most likely not work. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 9, 2013

    Perfect replacement cable

0 5/5 P. Kosal - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A to Micro-B Cable in Blue 6 Feet (Personal Computers) I bought this cable after reviews from the portable USB 3.0 WD external hard drive I bought used stated that the low transfer speeds were due to the oem supplied USB 3.0 cable. As soon as I tested with the cable bought, my transfer speeds did increase to almost doubled, not as fast as USB 3.0 speeds advertise, but then again that was due to the HD being a mechanical hard drive. The length of the cable is long enough that I can hide the hard drive tucked out of the way when I bring it to DJ.4 weeks in use and have not had an issue.I would recommend this product. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 31, 2012

Drive works fine, but beware included utility software

Based on the drive itself and the backup software, I would have given this product 5 stars--it is very quiet in operation, quiet enough to be left running full time on your desk. The easy-to-use included backup software can continually backup files each time there is a change or you add a new one (or you can choose to do periodic backups), and even automatically can keep up to 25 earlier versions of files that you've modified (you set the number archived). Why then only 3 stars? Because the drive comes with drive utility software that has a glitch. After installing the drive, before doing anything else, I ran the drive diagnostics; it passed the SMART Status and Quick Drive tests (both very quick to run), but about 30% of the way through failed the Complete Drive Test, which takes hours to run. I ran all the tests again, got identical results, then called WD tech support. Based on my results, they said the drive was defective, and that I should return it to Amazon, which I did... 3/5 Footprinter - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Next select the newly plugged in a hard drive and on the right-hand side you should see partition click on that.4. Then inside that screen on the partition layout drop-down choose how many partitions you'd like to set up. I generally go with one partition and just use folders to organize my files.5. Another solid WD product

I purchased this drive largely based upon a specific need for a USB 3.0 product with 4TB of storage. I've owned many WD internal and external HD products over time and have not had any drive failures to date over many years. I purchased this drive specifically as a backup storage drive attached to a Synology 1813+ NAS unit. This required a reformat to EXT4 as the drive comes natively formated in NTFS. The Synology NAS schedules backup to this drive of selected folder shares using the "Time Backup" software available from Synology. I'm not utilizing any of the software included from WD with this drive (backup, cloud, etc.) as the Synology NAS has its own software for each of these purposes. The drive itself is similar in size to other My Book drives. The plastic casing is certainly not as nice as the aluminum finish on the WD My Book drives that I have for my Macs, but it is similar to the black of the Synology unit and overall looks good. The power adapter is... Read more Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 19, 2013

Very Good Quality Cable, but Think Twice about pairing with WD Passport

I bought this cable because after reading the reviews about the , I learned that there was a common defect with the stock USB 3.0 cable included with the drive. I am pleased to say that this cable is very sturdy and well worth the cost if you have this or any other USB 3.0 hard drive. The only issue I have with this cable is its size. If you're concerned about your Passport being portable, you might think twice about this cable, or try to find a smaller length (I should have known 6' would be too long). I have posted a size comparison of this cable in the 'Customer Images' section. All things considered, you will be extremely satisfied with this cable regardless of what drive you have. The connectors are strong, just know that the length and thick... 5/5 S. Eckelberry (Fort Collins, CO) - See all my reviews, January 8, 2013

Works great for fast USB-3 Transfer rate

I connected a Western Digital Passport external hard drive via this cable to a USB3 port on my computer.(The port was on a PCI Express card I installed: SYBA Combo USB 3.0 + SATA III 6Gbps, v2.0 PCI Express, x4 Slot Controller Card Model in my MSI X58M motherboard.)I had no problems with the computer recognizing and communicating with the drive. Windows reported data transfer rates of 65 to 70 MB/s (which is much faster than the 25 MB/s or so that this drive delivers over a USB2 port). So this cable works as advertised: it is compatible with the Western Digital Passport drives, and does deliver true USB3 speed. It looks attractive, and seems to be well-made.I would recommend this cable to anyone... 5/5 Amazon Customer (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Extremely flimsy usb3 connector design - BUYER BEWARE

I have *never* had any such issue with any previous drive (my only real gripe has been... 1/5 INGE STUBDAL "Inge" (Oslo, - Norway) - See all my reviews This review is from: WD My Book 2TB External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 File Backup and Storage (Personal Computers) This applies to the My Book USB3 2TB drive.First the good stuff -It is a nice fast drive.

If you are buying this for the backup software, skip this review, because I'm going to be describing... 4/5 Scott Saccenti (Colora, MD USA) - See all my reviews, October 12, 2011

A little pricey if you just need the space, but...

Every now and then the activity light on the drive would... 4/5 Jeffrey Pittman "Jeff" (Durham, NC USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2010

Because I use this on gigs, where I access sampled grand piano sounds via MIDI from my keyboard, I need something that is reliable. The gauge of the wire seems much thicker than the original adapter, and the flexible rubber connector where the wire comes out of the adapter is well-designed. I was a little hesitant to spend so much money on an adapter, but considering that Radio Shack charges $40 for something that looked much cheaper, it is a pretty good deal after all. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 7, 2011

    This drive has serious issues

This drive is embedded with Western Digital's SmartWare virtual CD that will ALWAYS and FOREVER boot to your Mac computer. This Virtual CD cannot be disabled, unmounted, removed, eradicated, or partitioned away - EVERY!!!!! It says so right on WD's website buried in the tech support area, not on the box where this kind of "don't-buy-our-product" warning belongs. Western Digital has decided to embed their Virtual CD Smartware into this drive so that you cannot, under any circumstances, disable or remove the VCD. It will forever mount this unwanted intrusion to your Mac (Windows is no better apparently) and their website essentially tells you that you can do nothing about it.Can you tell that I am upset?!? I own seven other Western Digital hard drives and I will not own this one. Nor will I buy another in the future out of fear of getting the same results.Like many people, I have no need for their backup or security software as I just want external drivers for... 1/5 Wildness (Colorado Plateau) - See all my reviews, October 11, 2009
