About this book
Make your Apple Wi-Fi network fast, reliable, and secure!Updated November 20, 2015Join Wi-Fi wizard Glenn Fleishman and learn to create a fast, reliable, and secure Apple Wi-Fi network using 802.11ac or 802.11n AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, and Time Capsule base stations. You'll find plenty of practical directions for working with Apple's AirPort Utility configuration software (for Mac and iOS), including steps for setting up a base station, swapping in new gear, adding base stations to extend your network's range, attaching USB drives or shared printers, enabling security, creating a guest network, and more. If you better understand channels and bands, for instance, you may be able to reconfigure your network to dramatically improve performance. And, Glenn provides advice and directions for coping with tricky IP situations. The book also provides directions for setting up a cellular iOS device as an Internet hotspot, and it discusses Apple's Instant Hotspot feature."If anyone knows about real-world Wi-Fi, it's Glenn Fleishman."    —Mark Frauenfelder, co-founder of bOING bOINGYou'll learn how to:Create a basic Apple Wi-Fi network, and connect to it from OS X, iOS, Windows 10, Android, and Chrome OS.Efficiently swap a new base station in place of an old one.Extend the range of a network by connecting base stations with Ethernet or Wi-Fi (or a mix).Print wirelessly to a Wi-Fi or USB-connected printer.Add a USB-attached drive to a Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme, and set up user access.Keep intruders out by setting up reliable and relevant security for your network. Great Shared Storage Drive For Mac & PC, Improved Internet Speed

In my household we have a MacBook Air, 2 PC's, 2 iPhones, and an iPad. For a long time I've wanted a shared storage drive that would always be on so all my computers and iOS devices could access it wirelessly at any time. The new Apple Time Capsule has finally given me that. In addition, the wireless internet speed of my network is 50% faster.NETWORK SET UPSetting up the Time Capsule for the internet was extremely easy. My iPad immediately recognized the Time Capsule after I connected it to the modem and plugged it in. On the iPad I created the network name and password. I also created a guest network name and password. The Time Capsule updated this and I was up and running. From pulling it out of the box to surfing the internet was less than 5 minutes.INTERNET SPEED TESTAfter I connected all my computers and iOS devices to the new network I did a speed test with the app Speedtest.net on my iPhone. I had an inexpensive Belkin wireless N router... 5/5 JJG - See all my reviews This review is from: Apple Time Capsule 2TB ME177LL/A [5th Generation] (Personal Computers) In my household we have a MacBook Air, 2 PC's, 2 iPhones, and an iPad. Team Apple FTW!

I bought this with my new ARRIS SB6183 cable modem and I am so happy with my purchase. My wireless speeds have been consistently above average - my initial Time Capsule backup was totally wireless and knocked it out in less that 8 hours compared to an entire day with my old external connected via USB.. With my old external, I had to do my backups manually.. Now, I'm getting a full-service backup when I don't even know it. When I'm ready to backup my backup, I can manually backup the external I have.I am completely satisfied with my purchase.. Another #TeamApple win..[Review for ARRIS SB6183]"I really don't write many reviews, but I took speed tests ahead of time just to prove to myself that I wasn't wasting my money (although, I [was] renting a 2-in-one modem/router from Comcast for $10/mos.). Worked as expected and did not mess up my network

5/5 Richard Hanson (California, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Apple Time Capsule 3TB ME182LL/A [NEWEST VERSION] (Personal Computers) Worked as expected and is still working. It arrived with bridge-mode on (i.e., network hub/wi-fi turned off) which is good. Over five ago I bought a much older model which immediately become a hub and fought with my other hub for control of my network devices. Took me a while before I understood what was going on. I bought this one because the other one's hard drive, I think, is getting flaky (having to turn it off and back on to get it to connect). Older model, but still fast enough for most users needs.

My old router was having problems and needed to keep being reset to work. I was shopping around on amazon for routers and came across this Time Capsule. I figured since it was listed for half the retail price, I'd give it a try.For the price I got it at, brand new for $134, I feel it was a steal. You are getting 2 products in one. A dual-band wireless router and an automatic backup hard drive. Yes it is the older model and compared to the new time capsule, the wireless is slower compared to the new ac. However, since I own no devices with the new "ac", it really provides no benefit to use the newer model time capsule. If you have older imac, ipads, cell phones, then using the wireless "n" is the fastest you will get on wireless. Also, wireless n still provides plenty of bandwidth for most users. In my option, if you want the gigabit speeds, just go with a wired connection. Those speeds are overkill, since most internet plans are no where need those speeds... 4/5 B.B. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good Product, Can Be Even Better

4/5 Steve Haffner (Fort Worth, TX United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Apple Time Capsule 2TB MB996LL/A [OLD VERSION] (Personal Computers) I have worked in IT departments and understand how difficult setting up networks and backup strategies can be. Having worked with PC technology for years, it is a blessing to open an Apple product every single change I get the opportunity. Just plug it in and it works. This device, due to its nature, is a tad more complicated -- but just a tad. The reason I ding it is that after installing Snow Leopard, my wireless network drops its signal from time-to-time I have to reset it. This is a well documented issue and not unique to my setup. I hope it is something Apple fixes in the next release as my parents, who struggle with technology, get frustrated with this problem. 5/5 RW D. (Cape Cod, MA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Apple Time Capsule 2TB MB996LL/A [OLD VERSION] (Personal Computers) I purchased this 2nd Gen Time Capsule to replace a very ols 1st Gen 500GB one that was beginning to be unreliable. I originally had a problem getting it installed. I eMailed Small Dog Support, and they immediately responded that they would send RA to replace or refund (I received it in a few days). Meanwhile I had contacted Apple Support, and the specialist walked me through the solution to the problem. It has worked fine since. The Price for this was half of the current model.
