The Great Influenza, The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History

Creator: John M. Barry | History - 2005-10-04

John M. Barry has written a new afterword for this edition that brings us up to speed on the terrible threat of the avian flu and suggest ways in which we might head off another flu pandemic.

Publisher: Penguin

About this book
At the height of WWI, history’s most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in twenty-four months than AIDS killed in twenty-four years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision of science and epidemic disease. Magisterial in its breadth of perspective and depth of research and now revised to reflect the growing danger of the avian flu, The Great Influenza is ultimately a tale of triumph amid tragedy, which provides us with a precise and sobering model as we confront the epidemics looming on our own horizon. John M. Barry has written a new afterword for this edition that brings us up to speed on the terrible threat of the avian flu and suggest ways in which we might head off another flu pandemic.

Very good simple, slim, super-portable hard disk

I picked this hard drive after a lot of searching, scanning through reviews and comparing models. I was torn between picking a 500 GB or a 1 TB hard drive. I was looking at some WD drives and this one. I needed a drive for just routine backups. I have over 100 GB in Dropbox, but using it exclusively for all my backup is not very convenient. It takes very long to upload and not absolutely everything can fit in it. The point is that I didn't need a hard drive to lug around a large media library with me. I mostly stream stuff and I have a rather large drive in my notebook anyways. This is why 500 GB would work for me and I didn't desperately need a terabyte of space. While some other drives had double the space for just a few more dollars, I went with this one because of its size and weight. This thing is slim and looks very decent. Taken out of the rather easy-to-open packaging, this device was not that special looking. It doesn't have cool colors, designs or accents. It's a... 5/5 Antriksh Yadav (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) $60 beats $4000 and a nervous breakdown

I bought this Seagate backup because I have a Macbook Pro and once I downloaded El Capitan my old hard drive backup - a Lacie - no longer worked. I'm not sure why. I tried to get it to backup, but couldn't. So, I bit the bullet and bought this Seagate. My macbook pro is about 4-5 years old, and since downloading el capitan its also slower. the other day it was acting up, so I shut it off and it had a tough time rebooting. so that put the fear of god into me, and I bought the Seagate. there are no good instructions that come with the drive to help you in the process, which is why I took a star off.it took a while for me to figure out how to get this to backup, so for those who are as tech-unsavvy as I am, here's what I did after I watched a youtube video or three.1. connect the drive to the computer at the usb port.2. once you see the seagate icon, click the apple icon on the top left and click 'system preferences'.3. when system... 4/5 annabella (bankville) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) HARDWARE FAILURE - PURCHASE THE DATA PROTECTION COVERAGE!!!

1/5 Steve S. (Orange County, CA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4 TB Portable External Hard Drive for Mac USB 3.0 (STDS4000400) (Personal Computers) Bought this for storage of important files (photos and design projects). While it's a huge storage and a great price, I had a "HARDWARE FAILURE" within the first month and a half. Just long enough to do a ton of important work. Now I'm paying hundreds of dollars to try and recover the data.PURCHASE THE DATA PROTECTION COVERAGE!!!The tech said they get a lot of business trying to recover seagate drives. Maybe just because they are popular, but also sounded like the 4TB model was more common to have issues. Reality is that all portable hard drives are at risk of failure or data loss. Consider getting two 2TB versions and using one to back up the other because one of them will certainly fail. Overheats

Bought this to replace the WD My Book 4TB which is full. One obvious issue is that the temperature kept rising with continuous access and I had to disconnect it at 55C (room at 22C), just 1C away from tripping the "BE Airflow Temperature". The Seagate specification states it worked up to 60C but I didn't push it because heat kills hard drives based on my experience. The triangular patterns on both sides aren't heat dispersing vents. Only the bottom and the rear are. Spent three hours to drill all the holes on both sides of the case but didn't help to lower the temperature at all. I have to run the drive w/o the plastic case for it to cool properly. Stick 4 rubber feet on the metal bracket so that the heat from the bottom can escape. Under the same condition, it stays at 42C. At room temperature 26C, the WD/Seagate have stayed at 45/49C respectively (42/44C with air circulation) after hours of copying from the WD to Seagate. It is surprising Seagate would... 2/5 Invisible Man - See all my reviews This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 8TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STDT8000100) (Personal Computers) Bought this to replace the WD My Book 4TB which is full. Bought 2 new drives in March 2015, both have seriously and strangely malfunctioned.

[UPDATED Jan 21, 2016]I have many Seagate drives and will continue to buy them. But my particular experience with this 8TB drive bears reporting and is why I give it only 1 star.I bought 2 of these 8TB drives, here, in late March of 2015, brand new. One was for backup of the other. The drives were on a table top and never moved. The primary drive was used heavily most days, with many concurrent reads and writes, and synced up to the secondary drive at night. Both drives were safely detached and powered down each night, until used again. One morning last August 2015, when I connected the primary drive to my computer, Windows suddenly now says it is seeing a "ASMT 2115" USB Device. In Disk Manager, this drive shows 3 partitions, 1 raw and 2 unallocated -- instead of the single NTFS partition I had in place. I've never ever seen this kind of thing before, but a google search did report that others have had a similar situation before with other... 1/5 JL (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This replaced another Seagate hard drive that crashed, now 3 months later, of light use, it is dead!

1/5 Mike Alex - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STDT5000100) (Personal Computers) I purchased this drive to replace another Seagate external hard drive that crashed. Luckily, with this one, I backed up all information onto another drive. However now I am left with yet another brick and this time it only lasted 3 months of very light use. I wish I did not have to live in fear of losing all of my files. Having to purchase multiple backups is getting very expensive. This company needs to build a more reliable product. Hopefully they will honor their limited warranty, but again another hassle to go through. I just want a working hard drive. Working, but beware of bad sectors; always keep backups!

I received this drive 8 months ago and it is still working in an acceptable manner by my standards. For more details, please continue reading.Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors.I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents... 4/5 Milos Ivanovic (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Died during backup after less than 2 hours.

I was pleased to initially get this backup HDD, it is small, portable, clean design, with a nice black color. It was packed in an easy to open and protective box and the basic instructions were simple and clear, plug the HDD into your computer with the accompanying cord and download the Seagate Dashboard application to begin backing up. I did just that, and initially seemed to be up to a great start. The Dashboard app isn't fancy, but appeared to be sufficient to get the job done. However, fast forward about 2 hours to ~80% backed up, and the HDD starts to occasionally beep. I was not aware the drive had any speakers so inititally I figured I had heard something outside my house. Gradually over the next 10 minutes the beeping became more and more frequent until it was obvious they were coming from the drive and were coming out about every second. I also noticed at this point the drive was no longer backing up.
