Staying with Seagate over the years,,

I was introduced to Seagate about 2001 when I needed to replace the 'whopping big' 13½GB hard drive in my first computer, an IBM early model pc. I chose a 160 GB Seagate and it functioned perfectly until the 1999 Sony was retired. I also have a Seagate "Expansion" 3TB hard drive that is loaded with my entire film library of over 1400 titles. I bought this Seagate principally to back up my two computers every week via their "Windows Easy Transfer" function. I was especially pleased to get it for a most modest cost. Placed in use, I find that it still has over 1.4TB remaining, so I intend to load it with my 50+ operas and classical music selections. Additionally I have a Seagate 500GB FreeAgent external hard drive my computer tech sold me to use for genealogical work. I am editing my previous glowing review for Seagate. I bought a 3 TB model from the company and it came in a box just slightly larger than the drive's factory box and having room on one side for an inch layer of styrofoam... 5/5 Charles Scott PA (Hutchinson, Kansas) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive ST310005FDA2E1-RK (Silver) (Personal Computers) I got this HDD for a really good price. I was told it was 500gb but it ended up being a TB. (nice)....when I got it I thought it was broken because it didn't turn on. But I found out the charger had 2 parts. the prongs snapped into the block. so I put a rubber band around it to push the prongs and the block tighter together and now it works. the only other problem (Really easy fix) is the usb was the old slow kind so my xbox games would frees here and there. But I just put a faster 2.0 usb on it and it works fine. (2.0 are the most common...they cost ablout 1-99c) Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 31, 2015

This drive does what it's supposed to, store lots of files cheaply with minimum hassle. No weird unremovable software like Western Digital drives. I repartitioned and reformatted as HFS+ for Mac and got the full 2TB (by Snow Leopard's accounting). You do have to change the partition type to GUID or APM instead of MBR, as other commenters have mentioned, which Apple makes frustratingly non-obvious in Disk Utility. This is true for any drive that comes partitioned/formatted for Windows, so it's not really Seagate's fault, Apple is the one who invented their own partition method and they should make their own disk partitioning software easier to use. This drive is sort of quiet, although you definitely notice when it spins up/down and when it's being accessed. The whole front panel of dots glows a soft white light when in use. Sort of unnecessary, but not offensive, except if total darkness is important to you.Two things make it kind of... 4/5 501(c)Geek (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Working, but beware of bad sectors; always keep backups!

I received this drive 8 months ago and it is still working in an acceptable manner by my standards. For more details, please continue reading.Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors.I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents... 4/5 Milos Ivanovic (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Died during backup after less than 2 hours.

I was pleased to initially get this backup HDD, it is small, portable, clean design, with a nice black color. It was packed in an easy to open and protective box and the basic instructions were simple and clear, plug the HDD into your computer with the accompanying cord and download the Seagate Dashboard application to begin backing up. I did just that, and initially seemed to be up to a great start. The Dashboard app isn't fancy, but appeared to be sufficient to get the job done. However, fast forward about 2 hours to ~80% backed up, and the HDD starts to occasionally beep. I was not aware the drive had any speakers so inititally I figured I had heard something outside my house. Gradually over the next 10 minutes the beeping became more and more frequent until it was obvious they were coming from the drive and were coming out about every second. I also noticed at this point the drive was no longer backing up. Thinking something was amiss, I unplugged the drive, restarted... 1/5 Amazon Addict (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive ST305004FDA1E1-RK (Personal Computers) Don't buy this. We backed all of our files up on this, then our computer broke making the Seagate the only place our files were. When we got the new computer and tried to upload the files from the Seagate to the new computer, it wouldn't work. The Seagate croaked! A tech expert tried to retrieve the files, but said it couldn't be done. In talking to other friends who have external drives, they say they are unreliable. Certainly we wouldn't have made this our only source of files by choice. It was our unfortunate circumstance that all sources for files were lost at the same time. So, my word of advice is that if you use ANY storage device, make sure you have your important files backed up in multiple places. Avoid Seagate -- Buyer Beware

1/5 Henry C. Kevane (San Francisco, California USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive ST305004FDA1E1-RK (Personal Computers) Absolutely run away as fast as you can from anything made by Seagate. The entire purpose of buying an external hard drive is to find a reliable, permanent place to store photos and documents. Yet, after assiduously storing digital content to this drive over many years, it suddenly stopped working. The cost to repair: $1,800 -- almost 10 times the initial cost of the hardware! And then, guess what? The date could not be recovered. So, a decade of photos lost forever. Thank you Seagate. This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive ST305004FDA1E1-RK (Personal Computers) Oh, to learn a lesson the hard way when buying an external hard drive like the one I had with this Seagate 500GB "Free Agent" external drive. At one time I had too much music on my computer and ran iTunes off of this drive after I had put everything I had on it. I also transferred RAW photos from a trip to Germany. What I found out was that it is a good idea to have a backup for my backup. I ran this thing for a month, treating it well, and all of a sudden it just stopped working. Music and photos gone in one second. This T-Power AC/DC adapter worked well as a replacement; however, my only complaint is that it feels like it doesn't quite "snap" into place when inserting into my hard drive, so I had to make sure I didn't move the cord or it would come out of the hard drive. I don't know if I got a defective one, or there's something wrong with one end or the other or not. However, since I'm able to use it, and it does stay in for the most part, I feel like it was useful enough for the price. Seagate 1TB hold up!

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the... 5/5 Vidsavage - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Spontaneous Disconnect/Reconnect Problems

The drive performs well; I ran the HD Tune tests and was impressed with the drive performance, using the eSATA cable attachment with my Sony laptop. And, 1.5 TB in a small, portable, self-powered configuration is a really cool thing.Unfortunately, the drive spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects on its own. Most of the time, this is not that big of a deal, but for some applications (like, say, Windows 7 backup :), the disconnect causes the application to stop whatever it's doing.I use this drive for daily file backups, keeping a portable system image for recovery and I keep some large movies on it, as well. The Seagate support forums are absolutely 'lit up' with this issue and Seagate's universal response is to reformat and try again (i.e. "...you're using it wrong...").My belief is this: the Seagate firmware that will engage a sleep mode on its own; then, when an I/O request comes in, the time required to spin-up causes an I/O... 2/5 Kenneth F. It will fail you when you need it the most, Don't waste your money.

Like most people here, I bought this to backup my files in case my computer had a problem that would otherwise make me lose my files. Two years after I bought this device, the inevitable happened. My computer refused to start up. I thought I was fortunate because I had my files all backed up.However, NO. This drive did not serve the purpose I bought it for. It refused to let me transfer the files from it to my new computer. It had something to do with the version of the software (Seagate GoFlex Backup) that associates with the drive and which allows you to restore your files.Apparently, there is a "Pro" version of this software that also lets you to restore your files in what I thought would be a more intuitive way. I thought that might help so I got the 30-day free trial version of that (seriously? After spending $80 on the drive, Seagate wants to charge you even more just to let you get to your files? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.). If that wasn't enough,... 1/5 Anon Y. Mous - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
