    4TB Sleek, Fast, & Easy

I purchased the 4TB Seagate GoFlex Desk external drive with the intent of consolidating all my media files onto a single central drive. Straight out of the box, impressions were good. The newer generation drive offers a sleeker high gloss alternative to the previous Seagate Desk models. The drive comes equipped with a USB 3.0 base dock, which features five white LEDs on the front to illustrate power as well as indicate the capacity used on the drive in 25% increments. In addition, it also comes with the AC power adapter and a 4 foot USB 3.0 cord, which is significantly more convenient than the 1 1/2 foot cords that were supplied with my 1TB Seagate GoFlex Ultra Portable Drives.Right out of the box I plugged in to my Windows 7 laptop, had the drivers automatically installed, and was off and running in about 30 seconds. Simple enough. Actual available space on the drive (due to conversion) is about 3.63 TB, which was an expected reduction.. but is worth noting for... 4/5 Chris - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Drive with One Understandable Flaw

Because of some early negative reviews from Amazon users, and what I'm pretty sure is a computer rendering of the product instead of a photograph, I was initially a little reluctant about this drive. But I've had a lot of very good experiences with Seagate, so I bought it. I'm glad I did.The build quality is nice. The enclosure is actually really slick. I do prefer the look of a thin, USB powered, 2.5" external, but in the world of 3.5" drives this is total design win.It performs about as expected, if not better. I'm currently still using USB 2.0, but the initial burst on this thing is crazy high, and it (very) gradually slows down to my typical transfer rate. This is more true with a single large file than many small files. But its overall performance has me really excited about installing a USB 3.0 card in my system. The Bad? Well, I bought this to be a media drive, and it "sleeps" after a relatively short period of inactivity. I want my... 4/5 Beard/// - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Currently the best price for a drive this powerful--anywhere.

I had purchased a WD Elements 1.5TB external hard drive less than a year ago, but my iMac's start-up disc kept crying out for more space. So I decided to go to an additional drive, except with a capacity of 2TB's or more. I would have been happy to go with another WD Elements drive--were it not for prices double or triple what I paid 10-11 months ago. Then I noticed buzz on the internet about Amazon's low price for the Seagate Expansion Drive 3TB. While reading Amazon reviews, however, I couldn't help but be alarmed by the complaints of numerous recent owners of the "Expansion" model. As a result, I was about to settle on a lower-capacity WD drive when I came upon this Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 3TB drive, which Amazon was showing for a mere "dime" more than the Seagate Expansion drive. After reading positive reviews for this particular GoFlex at MacWorld and Cnet, I was sold. Perhaps the Expansion model has slightly smaller dimensions--but certainly too small to matter. Overheats

Bought this to replace the WD My Book 4TB which is full. One obvious issue is that the temperature kept rising with continuous access and I had to disconnect it at 55C (room at 22C), just 1C away from tripping the "BE Airflow Temperature". The Seagate specification states it worked up to 60C but I didn't push it because heat kills hard drives based on my experience. The triangular patterns on both sides aren't heat dispersing vents. Only the bottom and the rear are. Spent three hours to drill all the holes on both sides of the case but didn't help to lower the temperature at all. I have to run the drive w/o the plastic case for it to cool properly. Stick 4 rubber feet on the metal bracket so that the heat from the bottom can escape. Under the same condition, it stays at 42C. At room temperature 26C, the WD/Seagate have stayed at 45/49C respectively (42/44C with air circulation) after hours of copying from the WD to Seagate. It is surprising Seagate would... 2/5 Invisible Man - See all my reviews This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 8TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STDT8000100) (Personal Computers) Bought this to replace the WD My Book 4TB which is full. Bought 2 new drives in March 2015, both have seriously and strangely malfunctioned.

[UPDATED Jan 21, 2016]I have many Seagate drives and will continue to buy them. But my particular experience with this 8TB drive bears reporting and is why I give it only 1 star.I bought 2 of these 8TB drives, here, in late March of 2015, brand new. One was for backup of the other. The drives were on a table top and never moved. The primary drive was used heavily most days, with many concurrent reads and writes, and synced up to the secondary drive at night. Both drives were safely detached and powered down each night, until used again. One morning last August 2015, when I connected the primary drive to my computer, Windows suddenly now says it is seeing a "ASMT 2115" USB Device. In Disk Manager, this drive shows 3 partitions, 1 raw and 2 unallocated -- instead of the single NTFS partition I had in place. I've never ever seen this kind of thing before, but a google search did report that others have had a similar situation before with other... 1/5 JL (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This replaced another Seagate hard drive that crashed, now 3 months later, of light use, it is dead!

1/5 Mike Alex - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STDT5000100) (Personal Computers) I purchased this drive to replace another Seagate external hard drive that crashed. Luckily, with this one, I backed up all information onto another drive. However now I am left with yet another brick and this time it only lasted 3 months of very light use. I wish I did not have to live in fear of losing all of my files. Having to purchase multiple backups is getting very expensive. This company needs to build a more reliable product. Hopefully they will honor their limited warranty, but again another hassle to go through. I just want a working hard drive. Highly Recommended (yes, even by a computer geek)

I don't review many products but I wanted to write this as a response to some of the other reviews stating that Seagate had somehow inflated the price or specs of this product in order to take advantage of the Mac population of users. The only thing that makes this product "Mac-based" is the inclusion of the software and the FW800 port. However, the software is nice (and small - not bloatware). The ability to run diags on the external drive along with the option to turn off the LEDs is nice. The inclusion of the FW800 port for this price is a rarity, and what led me to purchase the product in the first place. The specs are the specs. Yes I could pay $50 less and buy a bare 3TB drive...but...I wanted an external with the FW800 port. If you're using a PC you could certainly use this drive, but you may have access to USB3.0 you might prefer to use. FW800 is the still the fastest stock option Macs have (barring Thunderbolt), or eSATA.Lastly, and this one... 5/5 Michael Miller (Boulder, CO) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 3 TB FireWire 800 USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for Mac STBC3000100 (Personal Computers) Another Mac reviewer noted the drive would fall into sleep mode before back up could be completed. Happened to me as well, no matter how I formatted the drive, or whatever software strategy I used. I now have got it working. What was the problem? My Mac G5 Desktop under Tiger would cannot juggle two firewire devices at once. When I unplugged one, and then tried to format a bootable drive, it was able to format successfully and I was able to boot my back up clone.Note: It does not matter if the other device is off line, if it is plugged in a firewire port, it will not format correctly, and/or just keep going to sleep. So if it falls asleep on you when you try to back up, make sure you have only ONE firewire device plugged in. All should work well from there.Good luck! Update Feb 22, 2012 I've changed my rating from 1 star to 3 stars (really 2 1/2)Editing this review as a result of a Seagate software solution found on their Support page. [...]I found this software download on the Seagate site that after four days of using it, seems to have solved the mount/dismount problem. I've used it with the 2TB Goflex for Mac drive alone, as well as daisy chaining four other drives to it for a total of 6TB of external drives. It appears to be stable and it has mounted no less than 20 times after Restarts and Shutdown/Startups. No problem now with Time Machine finding it and backups are taking place without trouble. The process of finding this file was pretty convoluted and I feel lucky to have found it. It would be helpful if Seagate made the notice more public so that the frustration level wouldn't be so high with their customers. I have to take stars away because of what amounts to mediocre to poor customer... 3/5 Gary Z (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
