Without great backups, all of that data could disappear in an instant. We don't like to think about theft, fire, and natural disasters, but these things happen. So do hard drive crashes and other malfunctions (not to mention user error). Your best insurance against losing data forever is a thorough, carefully designed backup plan. You don't have to spend a ton of money or be a technical whiz to back up your Mac. This book helps you design a sensible backup strategy, choose and configure the best backup hardware and software for your needs, and understand how to make your backups as painless as possible. Learn Joe's simple, three-prong strategy for bulletproof Mac backups. Decide whether Time Machine is right for you-and if so, learn how to use it for backing up and restoring data. Discover alternatives to Time Machine for storing multiple versions of your files. Find out why and how to create a bootable duplicate (or clone) of your Mac's startup volume. Choose the best hardware for backing up your data. Learn about offsite storage, including cloud backup services. Know exactly what you'll need to do if disaster strikes. Deal with special backup needs, such as large video files, backups while on the road, and backing up a small network.

    4TB Sleek, Fast, & Easy

I purchased the 4TB Seagate GoFlex Desk external drive with the intent of consolidating all my media files onto a single central drive. Straight out of the box, impressions were good. The newer generation drive offers a sleeker high gloss alternative to the previous Seagate Desk models. The drive comes equipped with a USB 3.0 base dock, which features five white LEDs on the front to illustrate power as well as indicate the capacity used on the drive in 25% increments. In addition, it also comes with the AC power adapter and a 4 foot USB 3.0 cord, which is significantly more convenient than the 1 1/2 foot cords that were supplied with my 1TB Seagate GoFlex Ultra Portable Drives.Right out of the box I plugged in to my Windows 7 laptop, had the drivers automatically installed, and was off and running in about 30 seconds. Simple enough. Actual available space on the drive (due to conversion) is about 3.63 TB, which was an expected reduction.. but is worth noting for... 4/5 Chris - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Drive with One Understandable Flaw

Because of some early negative reviews from Amazon users, and what I'm pretty sure is a computer rendering of the product instead of a photograph, I was initially a little reluctant about this drive. But I've had a lot of very good experiences with Seagate, so I bought it. I'm glad I did.The build quality is nice. The enclosure is actually really slick. I do prefer the look of a thin, USB powered, 2.5" external, but in the world of 3.5" drives this is total design win.It performs about as expected, if not better. I'm currently still using USB 2.0, but the initial burst on this thing is crazy high, and it (very) gradually slows down to my typical transfer rate. This is more true with a single large file than many small files. But its overall performance has me really excited about installing a USB 3.0 card in my system. The Bad? Well, I bought this to be a media drive, and it "sleeps" after a relatively short period of inactivity. I want my... 4/5 Beard/// - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Currently the best price for a drive this powerful--anywhere.

I had purchased a WD Elements 1.5TB external hard drive less than a year ago, but my iMac's start-up disc kept crying out for more space. So I decided to go to an additional drive, except with a capacity of 2TB's or more. I would have been happy to go with another WD Elements drive--were it not for prices double or triple what I paid 10-11 months ago. Then I noticed buzz on the internet about Amazon's low price for the Seagate Expansion Drive 3TB. While reading Amazon reviews, however, I couldn't help but be alarmed by the complaints of numerous recent owners of the "Expansion" model. As a result, I was about to settle on a lower-capacity WD drive when I came upon this Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 3TB drive, which Amazon was showing for a mere "dime" more than the Seagate Expansion drive. After reading positive reviews for this particular GoFlex at MacWorld and Cnet, I was sold. Perhaps the Expansion model has slightly smaller dimensions--but certainly too small to matter. In... 5/5 Samuel C. (Kenosha,, WI United States) - See all my reviews, June 5, 2012

    Restore Problem

Plugged in & fired up the 2TB Seagate a couple of days ago. One small oddity - the S/N on the bottom of the drive was slightly different from the S/N on the product box, tho the drive & cables appeared to be new and not a re-pack or refurb. (Older model / new box?) As mentioned by others, the Memeo Backup Standard software is built into the HD (no external CD to install, and fires up immediately after plugging in the power cable and USB connection. The software interface menu is pleasantly simple in design, although there are some drop down menus and an "advanced options" button. My experience with backup software is slight, since, as an old DOS-head, my familiarity with data tree structures allowed me to create (home system) backups with whatever file manager Microsoft offered with their O/S. But I had enough room (2TB's!) to completely copy my C:/ drive, and so I let the software do its thing. One time consuming mistake I made was not doing a good clean-up job on my... 3/5 Art H. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I've never had a HD crash until this one :(

1/5 DJ MichaelAngelo (Grand Rapids, Michigan) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 1.5 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive STAC1500100 (Personal Computers) Never again! This was my first and LAST time buying anything branded Seagate. I'd always bought Western Digital external hard drives to backup my audio & video data on, but for some reason I took a chance with this Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5 TB drive (model # STAC1500100) and in less than 4 years of gentle use, it crashed and wasn't able to be fixed. I tried 3 different places, even shipped it out to one of those professional "clean room" data recovery firms out in CA, and the guy there said the Seagate HD suffered from a "head crash" that was so catastrophic, there was no hope of anything being retrieved from it. This external HD was always sitting down on the floor right next to my computer tower, never moved around or taken places, and CERTAINLY never dropped or handled roughly. Yet here we are now. Again, never EVER will I buy another Seagate product because of this, and I urge everyone reading this to do the same. Zero For Two

This is the second Seagate external drive that I've bought. The first was a Seagate 1TB that died prematurely (but after the warranty expired), without any warning. I tried for days to get my data off of the drive to no avail. Several computers could not find the drive, let alone allow me to move anything off of it.I replaced that Seagate with a Western Digital that I have not had any problems with whatsoever. I was a novice as far as backing up goes. I had yet to realize that to have back ups in two or more places and formats is imperative. I lost a lot with the first failure, but no need for details, other to say that I was astonished at the sheer loss, and one would think that the name Seagate would have stuck out in my mind. But, it did not. That's why, a year or so later, with the incredible price for 3 TBs, I did not hesitate to purchase this one. A month or so ago - after approximately five months of nonstop service, it ceased showing up in Windows 7. My... 1/5 bustopboxer (East Coast USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
