Beer is Proof God Loves Us, Reaching for the Soul of Beer and Brewing

Creator: Charles Bamforth | Business & Economics - 2010-01-12

Charles W. Bamforth brings all that, plus a lifetime of brewing knowledge and wisdom. Read his book, and you'll agree with Benjamin Franklin's apocryphal quote: Beer truly is proof that God loves us.

Publisher: FT Press

About this book
Why beer is good for you! A funny, engaging, deeply personal guide to beer + brewing: its history, culture, and future • •By Charles Bamforth, author of Beer: Tap into the Art and Science of Brewing, and the world's #1 expert on beer. •Debunks a world of misconceptions about beer, and helps readers appreciate truly great beer. •Illuminates the radical changes now underway in the beer industry, as huge brewers consolidate and small 'craft' brewers rise. Beer Is Proof God Loves Us is a funny, engaging, and downright joyous examination of the whole world of beer and brewing. Your guide, Charlie Bamforth, may be the world's #1 expert on every aspect of beer: After a worldwide search, he was selected as the first Anheuser-Busch Professor of Brewing Science at the University of California, Davis. Now, he presents the most compelling social history of beer ever written: where it's come from, where the brewing business stands now, and what the future holds. In this farreaching book, he reveals • •The extraordinary complexity and artistry that can be found in great brewing. •The factors that impact beer quality and wholesomeness. •Centuries-old cultural values embedded in good beer. Bamforth also explains what the rise of new craft breweries means to beer drinkers and what the latest global trends will have on beer consumption. The book concludes with a look to the future, illustrating how environmental issues will change the brewing industry and addressing radical new approaches to brewing, such as Happoshu and malternatives.

Runs cool and transfers data quickly.

I have owned this drive for 1 week. I am impressed with how cool it runs; it does not get hot like my older 2010 model external hdds. I am also impressed with how lightweight it is, and I also like the shape of it and that it is pretty small. It's also nice that it is plug and play and does not require a separate power source. I glanced at the NTI backup software and the PogoPlay cloud data access software but did not use it yet since Windows backup handles my backup needs and plugging the drive into the usb port on my router handles my cloud data access needs. To note, the user interface of the NTI backup software is nice looking and easy to use. When I used the drive to take a system image of my mom's new laptop, the data transfer rate was averaging ~110MBps since her laptop has usb 3.0 capability. At home I only have usb 2.0 so my speeds are just ~10MBps which is to be expected. The light on it is white and blinks during data transfer, but it is not intrusive or anoying at... 5/5 Adrenaline - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A very happy Mac user

I'm a Mac user. I'm by no means a tech savvy person but I can manage pretty well. Thanks to the reviews here, I knew I had to do something to make sure the disk worked properly on my Mac. If you're so inclined, you can simply connect the drive to your Mac, find the Mac folder in it, follow the instructions, and install the little application that comes with the disk. One of the reviewers mentioned simply using Disk Utility to format the drive and that's what I did:1) connect the drive using the USB 3.0 cable included in the package;2) open up Disk Utility app on the Mac (use Spotlight if you don't know where to find it or even what it is);3) select the mounted partition of the drive (this is a jargon you don't need to understand, just select the nested TOSHIBAEXT under the external drive listing on the left);4) Go to Erase, select the "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)" format in the dropdown, then click "Erase". Average 2.5" 5400RPM USB 3.0 drive, Nice form factor. Expect a lot of service from this device. Good price point.

4/5 K.M. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Toshiba Canvio Connect II 1TB Portable Hard Drive, Silver (HDTC810XC3A1) (Personal Computers) Solid drive, nice form factor. This is the updated version of the Toshiba Canvio Connect. I dont use any of the cloud features or anything like that. I use these to carry stuff from here to there or to move files from this device to another when its just not practical to do it any other way. And my old 500GB drive was getting a bit long in the tooth plus a little bit too small. Its your standard 2.5" 5400RPM with a 8MB cache and S.M.A.R.T. capability. Nothing to write home about. But toshiba tends to make pretty good quality consumer drives.Drive performance is what you would expect. I used crystaldiskmark. I also used crystaldiskinfo for the technical spec's. They definitely did some QC on the drive as it was started 5 times before they sent it out. So all good there. I expect to get a lot of years of use out of this drive and will update this review if I dont., February 21, 2015

Please Read if Your Drive Isn't "Recognized" Anymore. An Easy Primer and Tutorial.

Many people have complained about the Toshiba 2.5" drives (of all capacities and price points) quickly 'dying' after a very short time. This opinion is prevalent on both Amazon and other shopping sites and even Toshiba's direct site itself.I was in the same boat. My Canvio Basics failed to be "recognized" by my PC within 1 month. My 2-star rating reflects this.HOWEVER, this is directed toward those who believe "all [my] valuable data is lost forever". I conjecture that 99% of the time it is not, and there is a relatively very simple & inexpensive fix.The problem is most likely not with the drive itself but rather the 'bridge' circuitry between the drive and the USB connection. There is most likely nothing wrong with the drive itself, and thus nor is there anything wrong with your data. Such was also the case with me.These drives, regardless of manufacturer or capacity, are essentially identical in their 'guts'. The difference is often... 2/5 TMac - See all my reviews This review is from: Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 1 TB Portable Hard Drive (Black)(HDTB210XK3BA) (Personal Computers) Many people have complained about the Toshiba 2.5" drives (of all capacities and price points) quickly 'dying' after a very short time. Fast, convenient, small and light and easy to connect.

I got a great price for this item so I bought it. It is fast, easy to use and comes with a long 5 foot connector that connects easily to your laptop or computer. I've transferred all of my movies and business data over and it's so convenient. I'm not trusting of clouds and I don't use them as much as others and all I do is keep this tiny hard drive in my laptop case and everything I have is in a secure medium that I dont' have to worry about.I have a Samsung S5 cell phone and it's a little smaller than that is but a little thicker. I have a small camera case that I put it in when I don't want to bring my laptop and I want to take it somewhere.Anthem just had 80 million people lose their information to hackers; several banks, techie companies, and even government agencies have lost millions of peoples information. People can do what they want; but I'm not trusting anyone especially clouds.
