Some technical tips on this great drive for Windows Vista or Windows 7, very big and reliable and inexpensive

[Updated this review on 28-Jun-2011]I have purchased 4 of these Western Digital Studio II external hard drives over the past 18 months (three of them are 4TB, one of them is 6TB), and they are great. The first 3 of these I bought have been chugging along with constant use for more than a year, with nary a hiccup. I just purchased the 6TB model about a week ago, and it looks identical to the 4TB models -- I have high hopes for it as well. For some context: In the past, I purchased 2 Iomega external drives and 4 LaCie external drives, and ALL of those external drives completely failed after a few months of use, while connected to 3 different computers. Unbelievable! But these Western Digital Studio II drives are a dream. They keep going and going...These Western Digital Studio II drives have a choice of 4 different interfaces (USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and eSATA), and I've used them with all of the interfaces. I've also used them on... 5/5 Randy Forgaard (New Hampshire, USA) - See all my reviews, June 21, 2011

Logic board fried within 60 days

I bought my Western Digital My Book Studio II - 4TB (2 x 2 TB) USB 2.0/FireWire 400/800/eSATA Desktop External Hard WDH2Q40000N with great expectations. Upon arrival I immediately reconfigured it to be RAID 1 mirrored (2TB the raw usable) for the added storage safety. Things went swell for about 58 days with it hooked up to my new iMac 27" i7 computer. I used it to put my /User directory onto to store my roughly 1.3 TB of files, music, videos, etc.Suddenly about 60 days into usage my iMac seemed rather slow. Eventually I realized it was various programs trying to save data to this external RAID 1 unit. After they all eventually wrote what they had to and shut down, I rebooted my iMac. This external Western Digital RAID 1 array did not remount. I was sort of freaked out!!!I did some online research and sure enough various websites contained other users' experineces with this device frying its logic board within the first 90 days or so. I immediately... 1/5 William A. Gimbel - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Has turned out to be a great drive and expandable!

Update: I actually have really under appreciated this drive. I did not even realize you can swap out the hard drives in it (easy!) for bigger drives. I called WD and they said use only the WD Green drives and only up to 3 TB per unit. So it can be upgraded to 6 TB for a couple hundred bucks! That is a good deal. Also, my iMac is still going on quite well. I don't see updating it for a couple more years (its replacement by Apple was also stripped of some things I like - hopefully Apple sees users want those things in next revisions). Anyhow, the 11,1 iMac's fastest external is FW 800 and it has worked well for me.WD seems to have stopped making this device except one that is USB 3 only or Thunderbolt. There is no way to buy a Thunderbolt drive and plug it into FW or USB with some kind of adaptor. It is impossible. BUT it is possible to get an adaptor and use a FW 800 drive WITH a Thunderbolt Mac.I'd consider a USB 3.0 (it will work in 2.0 on my iMac)... 5/5 N. REVIEW UPDATE July/2013

This is an UPDATE from my initial review.-----------------------------------After more than a year-and-a-half since my initial review (below), I can happily say that all is still quiet on the Western (Digital) front - which is great news - for me, at least. The "My Book Studio 1TB" drive still earns 5-stars from me. The drive is still as dependable and quiet as when I first purchased it. In my experience, this external drive has lasted the longest, and I certainly put them (I bought a second about 9-months ago) through their paces, and have nearly maxed to capacity one of the drives and it still and has always worked like a charm. That drive holds all of my video content, and copying to a from as well as playback has been without incident, as all drives SHOULD work. Ditto for the second drive: no incidents, no problems, no worries. For the record, my two drives are of the Firewire variety, and each is connected separately to my desktop computer (Mac Pro/... 5/5 DineKur - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Warning if you need a bootable backup...

I'll cut to the chase. This would have been a 5-star review, but as I learned, this drive might not be for you if you need a Firewire bootable backup. If this is a concern, read on...I bought this drive intending to partition it into two 1TB partitions- one for a bootable backup and one for a Time Machine backup. I do my bootable backups with the application SuperDuper, which is outstanding for this purpose. I have used it to create bootable backups on 3 different Maxtor external Firewire drives, and they have all flawlessly booted all my Macs. I expected no different from this new Western Digital (WD) 2TB drive. Unfortunately, the WD would not boot 2 out of my 3 Macs when connected via Firewire. It would NOT boot an Intel MacBook (Late 2007 edition) or an Intel iMac (Mid 2007 edition). It does boot our Intel iMac (Mid-2010 edition). Strangely, the WD booted all 3 Macs when connected via USB, though needless to say very slowly in all cases. If you need additional... 3/5 Dave K - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Mac external hard drive

Being in the market for an external hard drive for a Mac in my household, I naturally turned to customer reviews to read what others thought of the various drives on the market. What I found is that for every brand that I researched, including Western Digital, Seagate, LaCie, G-Technology and others, there are those that love the drives along with a few that reported multiple failures of the drives along with a promise to never buy that brand's hardware again. This made my decision process that much harder, especially since I am more familiar with the PC environment and wasn't sure about what might be best for a Mac. In the end, I went with what I knew from my prior experience.I'm an IT guy and have a lot of hardware in my household, which has expanded from PCs to include Macs in recent years. My plan was to use a rarely used Mac Mini as a media server, to stream music, DVD movies, family photos and home movies to other devices, including Apple TV. Excellent, works perfectly with iMac

5/5 GoGirlGo - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Book Studio 2TB Mac External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 (Personal Computers) I received this product yesterday and am very impressed with it. The outward appearance of sleek silver matches my new iMac perfectly. In fact, my smartalecy (ok, there's no such word) husband put an apple sticker on it, and it actually looks like an apple product. Very easy to hookup with a power AC cord and a USB cord. I plugged it in, and iMac immediately asked me if I wanted to use it for backup, which I did. It utilized USB 3.0 which is super fast, and I have a huge amount of files to back up, which it did nicely.2 Terabytes is plenty of space. I agree with another reviewer that this is indeed a great backup drive for Mac users. Quiet and Fast, you can't go wrong. My only issue is it's a bit pricey and it would be nice to see the price come down somewhat. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 28, 2012

Reliable, high capacity drives for Mac systems.

I only use these drives with Macintosh systems; one was a replacement for two Lacie Quadra drives which failed after 2-3 years use. As a precaution I reformat these drives to a known state using the Disk Utility software.I've used these Western Digital (WD) for several years without any failures. Two 4TB drives are used for general file storage and backups while another 6TB drive for video file storage. The drives also work flawlessly with Time Machine. The USB 3.0 interface is relatively fast, but backup times vary depending on the nature of the files being copied. For example, copy time for 100 GB took approximately 20 minutes. I've also noticed some increases in copy time when considerable file fragmentation is present on the receiving drive. Deletion of obsolete files and periodic file consolidation is done to address the slow performance induced by space fragmentation. Utility software (e.g., Tech Tool Pro) can be used periodically to "de-frag" a... 5/5 Deebz - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) My book studio 3 tb external hd is for perfect large files

4/5 Robo_Mac - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Book Studio 3TB Mac External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 (Personal Computers) I haven't seen any cheap SSD drives with this much space, so I purchased the my book studio 3tb. It is fast enough for backing up files. I NEVER use back-up software like time machine etc for external drives. Anytime I read about problems with external drives, seems to be related to back up software that was installed. I just reformat the drive and drag and drop files on it.It looks like a silver book that is sitting up, with black pages. It is not too big and isn't noisy. There is a little hole on the bottom front, where the blue light shines through, when the drive is on.I don't see any switch to turn it off. I have to eject it from the desktop and pull out the power plug, from the back. It comes with a USB 3.0 cable too.edit: May 1, 2013, I do notice the fan noise now, I didn't notice it before. I guess when the weather got warmer, so did the Hard Drive? The fan noise isn't very loud, but it is noticeable.
