data. Furthermore, the European Union established clear basic principles for the collection, storage and use of personal data by governments, businesses and other organizations or individuals in Directive 95/46/EC and Directive 2002/58/EC on Privacy and Electronic communications. Nonetheless, the twenty-?rst century citizen – utilizing the full potential of what ICT-technology has to offer – seems to develop a digital persona that becomes increasingly part of his individual social identity. From this perspective, control over personal information is control over an aspect of the identity one projects in the world. The right to privacy is the freedom from unreasonable constraints on one’s own identity. Transactiondata–bothtraf?candlocationdata–deserveourparticularattention. As we make phone calls, send e-mails or SMS messages, data trails are generated within public networks that we use for these communications. While traf?c data are necessary for the provision of communication services, they are also very sensitive data. They can give a complete picture of a person’s contacts, habits, interests, act- ities and whereabouts. Location data, especially if very precise, can be used for the provision of services such as route guidance, location of stolen or missing property, tourist information, etc. In case of emergency, they can be helpful in dispatching assistance and rescue teams to the location of a person in distress. However, p- cessing location data in mobile communication networks also creates the possibility of permanent surveillance.

    DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

WD Passport drives have always been reliable, excellent drives and I've owned several without any issues, but this new version is very disappointing for 2 key reasons:1) The included software is incredibly tricky to disable if you don't want to use it. You have to go to WD's website and download new hardware and software drivers. I am relative tech-savvy, but it took me 90 minutes to finally get the drive ready to drag and drop files over to it. I almost gave up..I should have.2) New mini USB cable is VERY unstable. The slightest touch, and I mean just barely touching the cable while the drive is connected to your USB port, will disconnect the drive from your computer. The problem lies with the mini USB connection where it connects to the drive itself.I could have lived with reason 1, as I overcame it and my frustrations would have subsided, but reason 2 makes the drive simply unusable. I am returning it to Amazon.WD management - you are... 1/5 JREV (Ambler, PA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) unacceptable

i bought three of this new model and was planning to put a bunch of family pictures on them and give them to my parents for christmas.unfortunately i was a victim of false advertising : this is not a plug-and-play drive.WD, what are you thinking ? When I plug in my hard drive i certainly don't want a CD volume automatically appearing under My Computer in addition to the actual hard drive volume.Because of this "Virtual CD" nonsense, Windows launches the "New Hardware Assistant" each time I plug in my drive! Here is what WD has to say about "The Virtual CD" :"" A small portion of drive space on your new My Passport or My Book hard drive has been used to create a Virtual CD (VCD). The VCD contains the WD SmartWare installation software, the encryption and password protection application, User Manuals, and other resource files. The VCD looks like an actual CD volume and appears on the screen each time you connect your WD drive to the... 1/5 Stephan Baishanski (Paris, France) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2009

Hate it, wish I hadn't assumed latest model would be better than previous

I did research for a while on hard drives, and the previous model received generally positive reviews, so I finally decided to go for it and order one. Then I noticed the 'a newer model of this item is available' link, and clicked on it. Assumption; the newer model would just be an updated model of the previous. Now, I do not lay claim to a really high level of technical understanding of computers and processes, but I know enough to know that when your laptop crashes the first 3 times you try to connect your new external hard drive, there's a problem. At first I assumed that it was maybe a clash between the hard drive and my virus software, because it can be a little temperamental the first time it sees a new program, and when it did eventually install I began a back up. The back up just stopped after about half an hour; the cord fell out of the back of the drive. I plugged it back in, and the light on the drive came back on, but the back up wouldn't resume. I've tried several times... 1/5 A. Andrew (NY, USA) - See all my reviews, October 4, 2009

These keep getting better and better

    1. I've used various external HD over the years (Lacie, Western Digital, Seagate, OWC etc...). I've used the WD Passport series before and thus have "faith" in their general reliability (note: if you expect / demand that HD will never fail--> you're going to be dissapointed because it doesn't match reality). Thus, I know that these drives are well made, work well and are nicely designed etc...2. When I received this unit, I was very surprised with how WD has redesigned the unit to make it smaller, sleeker--> all in all and excellent USB powered drive. Furthermore, unlike the prior versions of the passport series, this unit now comes with "software" that is somehow integrated into the hardware (i'm not an engineer, but the bottomline is that the software is NOT independent from the harddrive; it's like "baked" into the drive)--> this I view as a very good thing because it makes the security aspect of the drive very streamlined. i'm really not explaining this software... 5/5 Harry M. Looks nice, too complicated to use

2/5 Sara390 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Passport for Mac 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Charcoal) (Personal Computers) The My Passport is light, looks nice and has a big capacity for most people. But when you start using it--well, the system design is pretty poor. I had to resinstall the software several times when the drive locked itself and the software wouldn't properly detect it and then started crashing. I had to emailing customer service because the online guides are difficult to navigate and answers are often in geek speak. Noticed along the way that in order to disconnect the drive you are supposed to SHUT DOWN the computer. Wha? Who does that? Also noted in the online knowledge base some very snarky answers from customer service blaming users for not following the complicated directions for using the drive. Now having another problem with the software not working and I'm sure it will take many steps to resolve.Basically, the makers are the anti-Apple--they haven't learned to create products that are easy to use. I probably wouldn't buy this again as a result. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 30, 2011
