data. Furthermore, the European Union established clear basic principles for the collection, storage and use of personal data by governments, businesses and other organizations or individuals in Directive 95/46/EC and Directive 2002/58/EC on Privacy and Electronic communications. Nonetheless, the twenty-?rst century citizen – utilizing the full potential of what ICT-technology has to offer – seems to develop a digital persona that becomes increasingly part of his individual social identity. From this perspective, control over personal information is control over an aspect of the identity one projects in the world. The right to privacy is the freedom from unreasonable constraints on one’s own identity. Transactiondata–bothtraf?candlocationdata–deserveourparticularattention. As we make phone calls, send e-mails or SMS messages, data trails are generated within public networks that we use for these communications. While traf?c data are necessary for the provision of communication services, they are also very sensitive data. They can give a complete picture of a person’s contacts, habits, interests, act- ities and whereabouts. Location data, especially if very precise, can be used for the provision of services such as route guidance, location of stolen or missing property, tourist information, etc. In case of emergency, they can be helpful in dispatching assistance and rescue teams to the location of a person in distress. However, p- cessing location data in mobile communication networks also creates the possibility of permanent surveillance.

    Excellent Product

I would highly recommend the Simple Drive by Hitachi. The unit is so small and easy to use. It looks nice when sitting on my desk next to my laptop. It has PLENTY of storage space and is simple to look up files. The only thing I did not like was the back up software that came with it. It is great for a beginner but doesn't have a few things an advanced computer user would want. Eg. It does not allow you to pick certain dates for the backup. It allows you to pick daily, weekly and a few other things. The main thing about the back up software was it DOES NOT erase any old backups after it creates new ones. You have to manually go in and erase any back up you want to get rid of. I ended up using a new 100 dollar back up software for the drive and it was worse. Do a lot of research and make sure that you get the right software. The best I have seen is an Image back up software that will erase old back ups and allows you to set all those settings yourself. Mini External Hard Drive

5/5 Cafefoxx - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Hitachi SimpleDrive Mini 250GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive SDM/250RW (Red Wine) (Personal Computers) This is the second exernal hard drive I am purchasing. Let me start by saying that the service received by Amazon through CompUSA was excellent. The delivery time was quite adequate.I was also impressed with the poduct itself. The sleek red external hard drive has a covering over it that gives it a non-slip surface. You can hold on to it even with sweaty palms and it will not be slipping and sliding. That said, I found that it worked well. A few times it disconnected from my laptop in protest, but that may be owing to the fact that I was transferring material from one external hard drive to another and that on my laptop, the two usb ports are quite close to each other.I was able to conclude saving everything and I also saw a blinking white light underneath the external drive which lets me know that everything was saving properly. In general, I am pleased with this product and specifically, with Hitachi product. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 29, 2010

A very reliable USB drive for my back-ups

I purchased the Western Digital USB hard drive in 2008 to use to back up about 300 GB of documents and photography files. My main concern was reliability, and since I had been very pleased with other WD drives (both internal and external) that I've owned, I went with the WD drive. After backing up my files to the portable drive, I took the drive to a relative's house a mile away to keep it safe in case of a (perish the thought) fire or other catastrophe at my house. Once a week or so, I retrieve the drive, back-up any new files, and return the drive to the relative's house for safekeeping.During its more than four years of service, the WD drive has performed flawlessly, writing tens of thousands of files and keeping them secure. It's a remarkable product, considering its size and weight. I've been impressed enough with the drive's performance that I've since bought two more of the WD Passport drives. One of these drives, an identical 500 GB model, has traveled with me on... 5/5 J. Chambers (Georgia, United States) - See all my reviews, January 4, 2013

Still works after 8 years of use!

03/23.2017This drive is still hanging in there! I'm impressed! I don't use it as much anymore because it is a little small in size compared to the drives that have come out since this one was sold in stores. But it's still reliable after almost 8 years, and for this I'm bumping it up to five stars!10/28/14This drive has served me well mostly as a music storage HDD. It still works after 5 years of use and regular playback of music even packed to its max with data this drive has not failed. I have used it as a file transfer drive numerous times too, and though it is somewhat slow in comparison to today's hard drive speeds, it has at least been reliable. I have had other drives of the same brand for long periods of time without a single on failing.Pros:Reliable, purchased mid 2009 still works end of 2014Portable, particularly slim for a 500 GB (when I purchased it)Not power hungry, useful if using battery power on laptopCame... 5/5 W.L. Still Running everyday after 4 years!!!

The Western Digital Passport reduced my 388 CD rack to a pocket-sized miracle. Likewise, all the photos, lesson plans, and Power-Point presentations that were cluttering my computer are now on my Passport. Here's the low-down. I was a bit worried that I might have difficultly setting-up this little guy. My fears were alleviated in about 15 seconds. About a month ago, I downgraded from Vista to XP and had NO PROBLEMS with the installation of this product ... whatsoever (seems some people who run Vista have been having some trouble). It could not have been easier. (Thank you Western Digital!)Now, the pre-installed software is REALLLLLY bad (that part is true). Western Digital should rethink this approach since nearly everyone removes it (and it deters some people from even purchasing their products). Minus one-star for being SERIOUSLY annoying!!As mentioned by other reviewers, the product is whisper-quiet. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

WD Passport drives have always been reliable, excellent drives and I've owned several without any issues, but this new version is very disappointing for 2 key reasons:1) The included software is incredibly tricky to disable if you don't want to use it. You have to go to WD's website and download new hardware and software drivers. I am relative tech-savvy, but it took me 90 minutes to finally get the drive ready to drag and drop files over to it. I almost gave up..I should have.2) New mini USB cable is VERY unstable. The slightest touch, and I mean just barely touching the cable while the drive is connected to your USB port, will disconnect the drive from your computer. The problem lies with the mini USB connection where it connects to the drive itself.I could have lived with reason 1, as I overcame it and my frustrations would have subsided, but reason 2 makes the drive simply unusable. I did research for a while on hard drives, and the previous model received generally positive reviews, so I finally decided to go for it and order one. Then I noticed the 'a newer model of this item is available' link, and clicked on it. Assumption; the newer model would just be an updated model of the previous. Now, I do not lay claim to a really high level of technical understanding of computers and processes, but I know enough to know that when your laptop crashes the first 3 times you try to connect your new external hard drive, there's a problem. At first I assumed that it was maybe a clash between the hard drive and my virus software, because it can be a little temperamental the first time it sees a new program, and when it did eventually install I began a back up. The back up just stopped after about half an hour; the cord fell out of the back of the drive. I plugged it back in, and the light on the drive came back on, but the back up wouldn't resume.
