data. Furthermore, the European Union established clear basic principles for the collection, storage and use of personal data by governments, businesses and other organizations or individuals in Directive 95/46/EC and Directive 2002/58/EC on Privacy and Electronic communications. Nonetheless, the twenty-?rst century citizen – utilizing the full potential of what ICT-technology has to offer – seems to develop a digital persona that becomes increasingly part of his individual social identity. From this perspective, control over personal information is control over an aspect of the identity one projects in the world. The right to privacy is the freedom from unreasonable constraints on one’s own identity. Transactiondata–bothtraf?candlocationdata–deserveourparticularattention. As we make phone calls, send e-mails or SMS messages, data trails are generated within public networks that we use for these communications. While traf?c data are necessary for the provision of communication services, they are also very sensitive data. They can give a complete picture of a person’s contacts, habits, interests, act- ities and whereabouts. Location data, especially if very precise, can be used for the provision of services such as route guidance, location of stolen or missing property, tourist information, etc. In case of emergency, they can be helpful in dispatching assistance and rescue teams to the location of a person in distress. However, p- cessing location data in mobile communication networks also creates the possibility of permanent surveillance.

Great drive - Faulty USB cable

Over the recent years I have purchased quite a number of these drives. I have a couple of USB 2.0 drives and about 12 of the USB 3.0 drives. They all performed flawlessly with my old computer. I purchased that computer in 2006 before these USB 3.0 drives existed and so the computer had only USB 2.0 ports. All the USB 3.0 drives worked perfectly in the computer with the USB 2.0 ports. Then in December 2012 I purchased a new computer and it has USB 3.0 ports. I connected a drive and was anticipating the "blazing speed" for file transfers. But there was a problem...The drive would lose connection and I would get an error message saying that the transfer did not complete and data was lost etc., etc.I contacted the computer manufacturer and they claimed it was a Western Digital problem. I thought they were just passing the buck, but I did some research and found that there are very many complaints all over the Internet about the Passport USB 3.0 drives... 3/5 Jon Anderson (Burlington, WI USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: WD My Passport 1.5TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 Black (WDBY8L0015BBK-NESN) (Personal Computers) Over the recent years I have purchased quite a number of these drives. The PERFECT External Storage Drive For My Macbook Pro

Wow. So many mixed reviews here, and like those of you who are pondering over whether it is worth purchasing this Western Digital MY PASSPORT, there may not be a clear answer.Let me tell you my story.Recently bought the new Retina Macbook Pro with its 500GB SSD drive. For a person like me who puts a lot of software on my laptop and does quite a bit of movie editing, hard drive space is a premium. So, when figuring out how to handle nearly 200GB of music, I decided it would probably be best to run iTunes off an external drive instead of taking up space on the Macbook.Again...Wow. Reading these reviews on Amazon was quite unnerving. So many great experiences with this drive followed up by a handful of negative experiences -- many talking of total hard drive failure. It's almost as if you are rolling the dice as to whether you'll receive a drive that works or doesn't....then there's the reviews from people who claim they are having... 5/5 Ronald Epstein (NJ) - See all my reviews, July 29, 2012

An essential storage backup tool in a digital world

I'm a computer repair technician, and one issue I have all the time with my customers is, the famous, 'a virus hijacked my computer and those precious pictures are inside'. Yeah, the prom, the honeymoon, or the newborn pictures are usually held without ransom. Most of the time we are dealing with malware of some sort that affects the Windows operating system files, but leaves the data intact. So, before I repair the computer, I rescue the pictures, and any other file they might value. However, not all repair technicians do this, most allege that the files are corrupted, which might be the case, but usually it really means they are too busy to rescue anything, don't know how to do it, or will not do it unless paid big cash. For one own's sakes, the best thing to do is backing up the data before the computer gets infected, or the hard drive fails. For pictures I recommend backing up the original files into data discs, but for faster everyday files backups (music, movies,... 5/5 Techie (USA) - See all my reviews, April 24, 2012

    Bundled Software Unremoveable!

Ok so here's the deal. WD used to sell ordinary hard drives. Good prices. Decent reliability. Just hard drives like everyone else. I own two of the earlier generation 500GB drives and I love them. That was then. Now they think they're "adding value" by including software on the drive for backup and whatnot.Fine.On the 1TB drive, my Mac says over 660 MB is being used for this. You can not erase this data. It appears as a "virtual" CD on the Mac Desktop. The hardware inside the drive protects this virtual CD from being altered in any way.You can run Disk Utility all you want. It won't remove it.WD says it's being "green" by including this on the HD and not a CD.Fine. Admirable. After a lot of customer uproar, they released a utility to HIDE the partition. But you don't get your space back. This partition by the way can "update itself" over the internet.Scared yet?Right now, if you want... 3/5 nicdnyc (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A good external drive with a few annoyances

The series of next-generation My Passport (including My Passport SE high capacity versions) drives from WD that have just come out seem to getting a bad rap. The bone of contention is based on two aspects. One is the new micro-USB connector and the second is the WD SmartWare backup & control software that mounts a second drive when you plug these things into your computer.I wavered endlessly after looking at all the bad reviews despite being interested in getting these. In the end, I decided to purchase both a 500 GB and 750 GB model to see for myself. If the product would be unusable, I could simply return it back.Firstly, the SmartWare. It automatically installs a second drive and it apparently cannot be removed or disabled. However, the software does not take up a lot of space. The capacity on the My Passport SE is 697 GB (750 GB formatted, NTFS), and the SmartWare takes up 569 MB if you right-click your mouse and check the drive's properties. That is less... 4/5 M. Sheet!!!

If I could give the d*mned thing negative stars, I would.I purchased this to back up an aging computer whose hard drive was just about maxed out. I had planned on storing my big files (photos, music) on it until I'd purchased a new computer. Then, I'd transfer everything from the Passport to the new computer and life would be wonderful.Good thing I tried to transfer files to a laptop before I did anything irreparable. The d*mned thing won't allow me to download to a different computer!!! I can return files to where they originally lived, but that doesn't do me an ounce of good with a hard drive that's burst its seams.I downloaded updated software. I fiddled. Then, in a last ditch attempt, I called WD support. They put me thru the same paces I'd already done on my own. Still no communication with "alien" computers.AFTER NINETY MINUTES ON THE PHONE WITH WD TECH SUPPORT THE REP FINALLY ADVISED ME TO GIVE UP AND INSTEAD DOWNLOAD DATA... 1/5 Anon (Sitting In Front Of My Computer) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
