An Introduction to Algorithmic Trading, Basic to Advanced Strategies

Creator: Edward Leshik, Jane Cralle | Business & Economics - 2011-09-19

This is an ideal book for the reader interested in understanding and harnessing the power of algorithmic trading systems, and is accompanied by a CD Rom which provides a quick ‘hands on' route to exploring the power of algorithmic trading ...

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons

About this book
Interest in algorithmic trading is growing massively – it’s cheaper, faster and better to control than standard trading, it enables you to ‘pre-think’ the market, executing complex math in real time and take the required decisions based on the strategy defined. We are no longer limited by human ‘bandwidth’. The cost alone (estimated at 6 cents per share manual, 1 cent per share algorithmic) is a sufficient driver to power the growth of the industry. According to consultant firm, Aite Group LLC, high frequency trading firms alone account for 73% of all US equity trading volume, despite only representing approximately 2% of the total firms operating in the US markets. Algorithmic trading is becoming the industry lifeblood. But it is a secretive industry with few willing to share the secrets of their success. The book begins with a step-by-step guide to algorithmic trading, demystifying this complex subject and providing readers with a specific and usable algorithmic trading knowledge. It provides background information leading to more advanced work by outlining the current trading algorithms, the basics of their design, what they are, how they work, how they are used, their strengths, their weaknesses, where we are now and where we are going. The book then goes on to demonstrate a selection of detailed algorithms including their implementation in the markets. Using actual algorithms that have been used in live trading readers have access to real time trading functionality and can use the never before seen algorithms to trade their own accounts. The markets are complex adaptive systems exhibiting unpredictable behaviour. As the markets evolve algorithmic designers need to be constantly aware of any changes that may impact their work, so for the more adventurous reader there is also a section on how to design trading algorithms. All examples and algorithms are demonstrated in Excel on the accompanying CD ROM, including actual algorithmic examples which have been used in live trading.

    So far, so good

I read reviews on mounting issues with this drive, but it was really the best buy so I went with it any way. I've had a few WD external hard drives, with pretty bad luck, so I'm crossing my fingers tightly with this one. I've had it for about 2 months now and it hasn't really given me any issues. There have been a few times (maybe 2 or 3) where the drive wouldn't mount immediately, but after a few minutes of leaving it plugged in it showed up.The firewire is great, so speedy and fast, a really nice upgrade from USB. You don't know what you're missing if you're still using USB drives. The WD smartware crap that comes preinstalled on the thing is annoying, but it's easily removable (sort of...), so don't fret about that. The digital title feature on the front of the drive I think was a huge waste of money. I don't really ever need to look at what drive it is... I mean, I don't have 10 of these laying around so maybe that's my problem. Personally I just find it... 5/5 z4q5 (San Francisco) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Cable Connection Problems Linger; Otherwise, 5-Star Mac-Friendly Portable Drive

As reported in other reviews, I've experienced a besetting problem with WD's proprietary cables- specifically at the connection point. I've owned 3 different WD MPS models in the past 3+ years, and the current model appears to come with the same problem as the first one I bought: the cable connection point (specifically for me, at either end of the WD-supplied FW800 cable) becomes loose over a period of time (my experience, ~2-12 weeks) and any slight movement at either end of the cable or in the cable itself will likely prompt a disconnection. If data transfer is occurring simultaneously, I've experienced corruption of and/or loss of data. IMO this is a huge problem for the My Passport Studio line, especially due to it's persistence.Cable issues aside, this 500GB model in Western Digital's My Passport Studio Firewire 800/400 USB2.0 Portable XHDD line- also available with 320GB or 640GB of storage- really stands out from it's competition when it comes to reliability,... 3/5 Doug Eberle (Norwalk, Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A companion to my MacBook Air

I purchased this drive as an external storage option for my MacBook Air, it didn't have as much space as I would have liked so I decided to store my music collection, some documents and pictures on an external hard drive.I'm a bit picky about aesthetics and drive performance but this delivered in both areas (sort of) the performance of the drive has been A+, I've not had a huge issue with it and it stores data and works great.+ I love the display that has it's meter and a tag or name, I think it's very cute and would be even more useful if you had more than one.+ I love the short cable, very easy to keep (I keep it in an old Magic Mouse box under the desk.) so it doesn't get tangled or broken.- LOATHE THE FINISH, it looks pretty but don't think for a second it's actual aluminum it gets dirty and picks up scratches that wont come off with an incredible amount ease. I tried to keep it protected but it didn't seem to affect the fact it gets... 3/5 Paul R. Thomas (Texas, USA) - See all my reviews, May 21, 2012

Stylish product, dockable, beats my WD Passport drives

I'm a professional photographer who fills up two portable drives a year (I swap the onsite and offsite copies after each shoot). The Western Digital (WD) Passport portables I've been using, at 320 GB each, are full to the brim with all my 2008 'raw' work. Wanting to preserve the data on them, I went shopping for two more portable drives, and came across the Seagate 500 GB GO models. You can't really go wrong with either drive (both companies offer a great five-year warranty), but I like the form factor of the Seagates a bit better (they're a fraction of an inch smaller in all dimensions but LOOK even more svelte than they are). Also, an Amazon promotion currently offers a free dock with the Seagate drives, much like an iPod dock -- just slide the device onto the connector and it mounts on your desktop. Handy and elegant. The WD drives don't have this option. The downside to using the Seagate dock (and this is why I give this setup 4 stars, not 5) is that, for... 4/5 TerryF (Maine, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Crashed & Burned at 7 Months

The pluses: It's light and small, easy to use, and comes preloaded with a document backup utility. Should be great for those who need a portable HDD as it can be dropped in a purse or slipped into a shirt pocket for transport. Decent copying speed for an external USB drive. The negatives: There seems to be a major reliability problem with some of the hard drives (note similar recent reviews of failure at Amazon). Mine died after only 7 months of use on a personal computer. It was never jostled around or subjected to extreme temps as it never left my desktop after it was plugged in. Several utilities were unable to recover any data due to "unreadable sectors" and Master File Table errors -- quite likely physical damage to the head or platters. I managed to save about 20 out of 200+ GB before the unit went totally south.Seagate warranties the drive for 5 years, but it's a whole lot of no fun trying to navigate their cold, impersonal website. 5/5 Bitter Almonds (City Of Dis, 7th Layer Of Hell) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent Go 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST910004FAA2E1-RK (Tuxedo Black) (Personal Computers) I've bought 1 250GB, 7 500GB, and 1TB external HDs over the past two years, and nothing out of the ordinary has happened (knock-on-wood). There were two times when I experienced problems with two separate HDs: I was unable to access files in one of them, so I defragmented it, and it worked perfect since then. The other (1TB HD) did make that horrible beeping and clicking sound a few minutes after I hooked it up to the laptop. However, it ceased to do it an hour later - and it's been working fine since then (it's been about 5 months); this 1TB HD was a refurbished item that cost about $99 total, so I took a chance on an used/cheap item. All in all, though, I've not had a serious problem to report for nine separate HDs of the same brand and make/model. If I was looking to buy another or give it as a gift, I wouldn't hesitate in getting another Seagate FreeAgent Go.
