In Living Color, Protocols in Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting

Creator: Rochelle A. Diamond, Susan DeMaggio | Science - 2012-12-06

This book stems from the editors'experiences managing flow cytometry/cell sorting core facilities for the emerging researchers, in particular in developmental, cellular, and molecular biology.

Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

About this book
Advances in the field of cell biology have always been closely related to the development of quantitative analytical methods that can be applied to individual cells or cell organelles. Almost from the early stages following the invention of the microscope, the investigator has been keenly interested in obtaining informa tion on the functionality of single cells and how cells perform under different sets of experimental conditions. Although cells could be viewed in the microscope for a few hundred years, only since the relatively recent application of autoradiography did we come to realize that, although cells may visually appear very much alike, they are quite different in their functional capacity. The quest to understand these differences in a cell population lead to a new series of techniques for labeling and quantitating DNA content and similar approaches have driven the develop ment of methods for analyzing various other cellular properties. The development of new analytical techniques follows the age old pattern of applying successes of the past with current inno vation, logic and new biological information. Results from auto radiography expanded the concept of the cell cycle from inter phase and mitosis to the more definitive GO/GI, Sand G2/M phases. This new knowledge lead to the development of techno logy to measure and analyze various parameters related to the cell cycle.

This is the improved eGo 500GB USB drive

Iomega's eGo 500GB portable USB HDD has been redesigned. When you purchase, make sure you are buying the new version.I bought this portable HDD specifically to back up my iTunes directory, which is approaching 300GB. I also own another Iomega 500 GB portable HDD, and when I ordered this one I thought I was getting another identical unit. This one has been updated, and apparently for the better. This one is shaped like a slightly large deck of cards rather than as a whiskey flask configuration like the older model. It also has nice little rubber feet. But the big improvement seems to be that it is somewhat thriftier regarding whether it could draw sufficient power from the USB ports. This unit easily functioned in one of my computers in which the USB port was insufficient to power the earlier model. I do not know if this is a quirk or whether Iomega improved the design.Further substantiating the theory that this unit is redesigned to be more... 5/5 Roger J. Iomega Rocks!

After using Simpletech and Western Digital drives of this type, there is absolutely no comparison in the quality of workmanship between the Iomega brand and the others. The case is solid metal and constructed with close fitting seams that make this a well designed and manufactured piece. I travel frequently and carry this device in my carry--on bag with my laptop and have not had any issues with seam separation or other visible defects. By accident my bag fell out of a chair onto the tile floor in the airport and I expected to see some damage to the unit and not a scratch or visible mark was evident, but my laptop did get some dings out of that fall. It takes rough handling much better than the Western Digital and Simpletech competing products. The only negative I have found with this drive is it will not run with only one USB port powering it and does require two. So when I have to hook up my USB aircard, mouse, phone charger, blue tooth device charger, I do have to pull out a... 5/5 Bad Dude (Florida) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Worked, for a time

Addendum: failed after a year and a half of very light use. Dropped to 2 stars.****It's small, seems sturdy, and is oddly pretty. It's very quiet. It's reasonably fast, but not a speed demon. I've had it in continuous use for a couple hours now (the first thing I do with any new disk is fill it to capacity, to see if there are going to be write errors), and it's barely warm to the touch.Things I don't like: 1. I wish the cord were a little longer. 2. On arrival, it was configured to allow me to create directories, but it rejected file creation at the root level. I decided I didn't like this setting, and after banging around in the disk's Security settings, I got it to behave as I liked. Preventing file creation at the root level might make sense for the boot disk of a system, but I'm not booting off of this and would rather not be told where I can put my files, thankyouverramuch. 3. As usual, the manufacturer is defining a gigabyte differently than... 2/5 S. Mayo - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
