    Great little hard drive!

I've used LaCie drives for years and they seem to fail far less often than other drives I've used (WD, Seagate, Maxtor.) Perhaps one of the reasons that my hard drives fail often is that I tend to be a little rough on them. I edit video, often on location, so I drag my drives all over the place. I'm hoping with it's rubberized shell, this LaCie will go the distance. I love that it is self-powered so I don't have to lug a power adapter with me. It's one of the few portable drives that is fast enough for video editing. I purchased the case for it as well to further protect it. I'll update this review if it dies.Update: I've used this drive for a year and it's still going strong. I'm going to upgrade to a larger capacity model soon.PS - Writing reviews has... 5/5 Claire Jordan🐬 (The Big Island of Hawaii) - See all my reviews, May 7, 2010

I must be lucky, I love this drive

I've purchased a lot of portable drives in the past 10 years. I've had problems with many of them, even others from LaCie.I don't buy USB only devices. USB is slow, and my time is worth more than the few dollars difference to get multiple interfaces on my drives. I use Firewire 800 when possible, but it's nice that USB works.Portable drives get thrown around a lot more than a desktop unit, and with passive cooling it's no surprise they have a higher failure rate. I've found out the hard way that the most reliable devices are those that don't push the engineering limits of the case, and contain a drive that's a bit more mature. Thus, I don't get the "biggest" drive and I try to select drive sizes that I know have been shipping for some time. Since performance is important to me, I select 7200 RPM drives although they tend to run hotter than the 5400 RPM devices.I've carried my latest LaCie 320GB 7200RPM drive back and forth to work every day for... 5/5 Kindle Customer (Salt Lake City, Utah USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fast, yet toasty

I bought this drive to run my Windows XP virtual machine off of my MacBook Pro. I didn't have to load or update anything. I literally plugged in the firewire cable and it worked. Because it is firewire, it's super speedy and I have not noticed any kind of lag when using it (remember, I'm running Windows off of it, a challenged operating system anyway, so it really is amazing it's running so fast.)I only have a couple of issues with it, which have not affected the performance of the drive in any way. The first is that the firewire cable does not fit snugly into the firewire port on my MBP. That's really weird. One wrong move and the cable flies out of there like it's a MagSafe adapter. So, I've learned not to move too fast or too far.The 2nd issue is that I have no where to put this thing. Obviously, that's not the drive's fault, but I think the word portable is a little deceptive with all drives of this type. If I'm sitting at a desk, it's a non-issue... 4/5 Michele Monroe (Franklin, TN USA) - See all my reviews, January 11, 2011

    It works

What's to say? It holds lots of data and it looks nice on the desk.A few comments, though, are worth making:1. It has a separate power supply. The other USB drives I have get power from the USB port on my computer. Adding this drive made me exceed the number of plugs on my power strip and made me find a place for the power brick, which is slightly larger than the power supply on my Lenovo laptop. This also means that you have to remember to turn it off separately from the PC.2. It gets pretty warm. Since I use it primarily for backup of my computers, this is not a problem. I just turn it off when the backup is finished.3. I wish the USB cable were a little longer. It's about 18" total, and my desk arrangement is such that a longer cord would have made for more convenient placement.4. There's a power button on the back. I'd have preferred it on the front. Maybe Porsche Design wanted a smoother look. The only... 5/5 David Lefavor (Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews, May 15, 2007
