2/5 Double Nerd (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Maxtor OneTouch III Turbo 1 TB 3.5" USB 2.0/FireWire 400/FireWire 800 External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) I bought a Maxtor product assuming that it would function like the100GB and 200GB products that I had purchased previously -- walk upto a PC, turn on the Maxtor, connect the USB cables, and it's done.Unfortunately, since this terabyte drive came pre-formatted for a Mac,I had to install their software, re-format the Maxtor, and thenit became a "one-touch" product.Maxtor should sell products that are consistent with their originalphilosophy, i.e. sell a "one-touch" drive in two editions -- onepre-formatted for the PC, one for the Mac, and whatever otherpre-formatted flavors. It's nice to tinker with computers and hard drives, but as an end-userI expect the product to be useful out-of-the-box. That's why I wasloyal to the Maxtor brand.Unfortunately, a one-touch product it's not.Other than that, it seems to be working fairly reliably as mytertiary-storage device. Works Great...Poor Documentation

I am very pleased with the way this hard drive works. I have the hard drive setup to backup my PC daily, and after a couple of days - it works great! There were no problems with setup, although the quick start guide was a bit confusing. You must keep the CD in the drive through the whole setup, not just during the software install. Speaking of guides - other than the two-page quick start guide, there was absolutely NO DOCUMENTATION! This is crazy. This is a great product with many features, but no way of knowing how to use it other than going to Maxtor's website. Other Maxtor product I purchased had very good documentation, so I do not know what is up with this one. The second thing I don't like is the LED light on the front of the system, which remains very bright - even in sleep mode. To top it off, while in sleep mode, the bright LED light blinks. Since my computer is in my bedroom, it is quite annoying at night. The light should dim down to nearly no light at all... 4/5 Amazon Customer (MD USA) - See all my reviews, May 18, 2006

    Warning for Mac OSX users

2/5 Henry B. (New York, NY) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Maxtor F01G300 OneTouch III 300GB External Hard Drive USB 2.0/FireWire 400 (Personal Computers) The software on this drive doesn't work. I spent an hour on the phone with Maxtor customer service and they couldn't solve it. The drive works as a simple backup for important data but their Retrospect Express, the software which performs the automated backups, synchronization, etc.) doesn't work. If you want a simple drive with extra space where you drag and drop data to be saved, this is a nice drive to have but forget the automating features. Beware

I bought my Maxtor II a year and 2 months ago but my comments seem pertenent to the whole line. The warranty is good for one year. That means that if the Maxtor fails within one year, they will send you a new one, but tough luck on recovering your data. You can protect your investment by buying a new one every year and then trying to figure out how to transfer the data from the old to the new. What a Godsend. Maxtor promised regular and virtually hands free backups of my hard drive. It was simple to install and set up. After installing I checked it regularly for months and it appeared to work as advertised. After not checking it in months, I discovered it wasn't working but it gave me a diagnostic code. When I called Maxtor the service was poor. After several efforts to get through, getting switched around, and hanging up on me, they told me that the diagnostic code means that the Maxtor is dead. (Why couldn't they just skip this... 1/5 Jayhawk (Portland Oregon) - See all my reviews This review is from: Maxtor F01G300 OneTouch III 300GB External Hard Drive USB 2.0/FireWire 400 (Personal Computers) I bought my Maxtor II a year and 2 months ago but my comments seem pertenent to the whole line.
