You'll discover the pros and cons of different backup media options such as hard drives (with USB, FireWire, eSATA, or Thunderbolt interfaces - and with or without full-disk encryption), flash drives, optical media, tape drives, RAIDs, Drobo storage devices, Time Capsules, and NAS and SAN devices.Choose backup software. You'll learn about 14 key features and find overviews and tips for 8 noteworthy backup products (an online appendix covers nearly 100 options), plus several suggestions for online backups. You'll also get Joe's personal recommendations to help you sort through the possibilities.Operate your Time Machine. You'll find what goes on beneath Time Machine's simple surface, and how best to make use of Apple's built-in backup system, including how Lion's local backups work when your Time Machine volume isn't available, and how to encrypt a Time Machine backup.Make backups. No matter what backup software you decide to use, Joe provides a conceptual walk-through of the entire process, offering basic information for people who've never made a backup before and savvy, real-world suggestions for making the backup process as easy as possible.Deal with special backup needs. You'll learn what to do about certain kinds of data that may require special backup strategies, such as large media archives, frequently changing files that need special versioned backup treatment, and Windows files and volumes hosted on your Mac.Recover lost data. Use your backup to recover lost data successfully in the event of a hard disk crash or other calamity. After all, restoration is what's really important.

I Previously Gave 1 Star. Now I Found I Was Wrong

Here is the original review with 1-star:--------------------------------------------------Extreeeeeeeeemly Slow! Drives Me Crazy!=======================================Purchased it for the purpose of storing multimedia (Video and Photo) files. My computer and the router are both Gigabit devices. However the transfer speed always around only 1MB per second! Such speed make it impossible to watch video! I purchased two devices: One is for myself usage and the other is for my brother as a gift.BTW, For all the Seagate's replies to comments, None of the link they provided works out! I always got the message: "HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found". What the hell is this?----------------------------------------------------Now I found I was wrong: Actually due to the mismatch driver of my network card it only performs at 10Mbit/sec. After downloaded updated driver from the PC motherboard's manufacturer, the network bandwidth... 5/5 Z. Han (NC, USA) - See all my reviews, October 5, 2012

    Performs as required

I have had the drive up and running for the past month and I have to say, it works exactly as I needed. I was a bit worried at first as it required me to sign into Seagate. I was worried I was logging into a cloud that allowed them access to my files. I do not want that. However, it was only activating the OS. Once that was done, I was able to connect through windows, create the drives I needed, and map them. I did not install any of the software that came with it as it is not necessary for this to function as a network drive. My backup software sees the mapped drive and backs up with no issues. You do not need to use Seagate's software if you already have software to do this. One thing I did not expect was Windows immediately recognized the UPNP-AV capabilities and installed the software for it. Now my TV and Blu-ray player sees the device and I can play movies, pictures, and music directly from the drive. I am sure all NAS drives will work the same way, but for the price, I really... 5/5 Caleb Morris (ORLANDO, FL, US) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I've wasted two weeks trying to get this stupid good-for-nothing hard ...

I purchased this drive in order to have a hard drive that would automatically backup over wifi. I set it up and did the initial backup. Then somehow my computer "disconnected" itself from the drive - the disk shows in Finder but when I clicked on it, it said it was "not connected." I tried "connecting" but could not remember the username I had set up. I spent hours and hours on the completely worthless Seagate support page trying to figure out how to identify my username or reset the drive. It said to hit the reset button on the drive, but no such thing exists on this model. I tried connecting the drive directly to my computer but it didn't even recognize that the drive existed (all other external hard drives I've used are recognized right away). I finally figure out the username and log in and am able to see the files on the hard drive. But now Time Machine won't back up to the hard drive because it insists the hard drive is not connected. I can view the hard... 1/5 Tana (WAVERLY, NE, United States) - See all my reviews, November 15, 2015

IMPORTANT - This will NOT stream iTunes purchased videos to you iPad or iPhone

1/5 Thank you all - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB Portable Hard Drive with Built-in WiFi (STCK1000100) (Personal Computers) IMPORTANT - This will NOT stream iTunes purchased videos. This is what I spent hours to learn and Seagate has well hidden on their website. There is a glitch that does not let you play movies purchased on iTunes using this device. It that is why you are buying this than my brief review will save you the countless hours of trying to get something to work that does not.If you want to convert non iTunes purchases from other formats to m4p than yes it will work but if you are like most of us who have run out of space on your iPad and need more room for video this will not work.If you find this useful please vote for this. I wish I had read this review prior to purchase, it would have saved me a lot of trouble. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 21, 2015

Amazing product, but avoid the official Media App

Amazing product! However, avoid the official Media App... look for alternatives. The good:- Portable. Very good looking drive, strong and well built. It's as tall as an iPhone 5S, but anout 50% wider.- Simple. The box includes the HD, a usb cable and a wall adapter for charging. Loading files is drag and drop simple.- Versatile. In remote environments you can connect your tablet, phone or computer to the device directly. Alternatively you can connect the device to an existing wifi connection and have access to all of your files in the device while maintaining internet connectivity. The Bad:- The official Seagate Media App is awful. It's a nightmare to use if you have a large media collection as it basically scans all your media and displays all of it in just four folders (music, video, photos, documents). There are no filters, and very limited metadata use. If you have 5000 songs, it will basically display a folder with 5000 files sorted... 5/5 Moralec (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works fairly well for my needs.

<Update 1/2016 - I still use this as a normal external USB drive without any issues, but have not used it wirelessly for over 3 years now, not because it does not work, but because I have not had the need to do so.><Update 1/2014 - I currently use a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 for all my portable computing and video needs, so I seldom use this drive as a wireless drive anymore. I mostly just plug it into my SP2 via USB and play my FHD WTV files to avoid the throughput problem and no longer need to bother with charging the battery anymore. In truth, using it as a wireless device for our Android phones was more trouble than it was worth, so we seldom actually used it. Too often video would stumble and it just got annoying.><Update 1/2013 - My wife recently purchased the Samsung Note 2 and the Smart Dock and now we only use this as a wired USB hard drive.
