    Fast & Efficient Drive

I was a bit skeptical about this drive after a lot of people were stating that it wasn't that much faster than the 250GB Seagate Momentus 5400.4. Anyway I followed my mind and I wasn't sorry, because this drive with it's 16MB cache 7200rpm was a step faster in the tests I ran using HD Tune Pro. I cannot attach the pictures but here are the results. Transfer Rate Min/Max Average AccessTime BurstRate CPUSeagate Momentus 26.7/63.6 MB/s 48.7 MB/s 16.3ms 85.7MB/s 5.6%Western Digital 36.7/84.4 MB/s 61.9 MB/s 14.7ms 107.0MB/s 4.2%These are the results I garnered with my laptop between the two drives and as you can see from the results the Western Digital Black Scorpio gives a nice boos to the system. My laptop is a Lenovo SL400, 3GB DDR2-800 RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz 1066FSB, Bluetooth, Fingerprint Reader, Webcam, etc. If you are not able to spend big bucks on a SSD Drives, definitely get the Black Scorpio. Not sure what people are complaining about

I have had this product now for over a month and I will tell you I am not sure what the complaints are really about. The HDD is extremely quick at accessing files and very efficient. So I will hit the complaints that most people seem to have regarding this HDD.1. Noise/Vibration - I am going to lump these into one because I think that they go together. Let's take a moment and make a couple of assumptions. (1) Most people that are buying this hard drive are replacing a hard drive. (2) Most people are doing so on an older computer (6 months or older). (3) Most hard drives being replaced are 5400 rpm hard drives. And finally (4) most people are doing the install themselves. Now that we have all that in consideration let's take a look at this logically. If you are in your car and you rev the engine to 5400 rpms and then you rev it to 7200 rpms, which do you think is going to be louder? The 7200 rpms right. Well this may not be a fair comparison, but something spinning faster is... 5/5 Michael P. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This is a screamer! In decibels...

I would stand corrected by myself. I now believe that the HD ignites a fan when it warms up and the fan was making the noise all along. When the unit is not warm the drive is quiet. I could even improve on that if I wanted, bought a shosk absorbing material from Edmund Scientific instead of what appears rubber insulator. So please disregard the rest I had written, and apologize if I had negatively influenced anyone.I have just installed 2 of these drives into my Pavilion dv9000.Yesterday I was in the other room, and suddenly my wife (who is a good woman and knows zill about computers) came afte me running telling me that something was wrong because my laptop was giving a strange sound, just like previously when the HD was beginning to scare me, that it was about to die. I was sleepy so I shut it off.Today - first day I am using it, - and all I am wondering is, that how long can I put up with this? They are about as loud as my desktop (but closer to my ears...)... 5/5 George O. Fuhrmann (NY) - See all my reviews, February 9, 2010

    Excellent OS Cloned Backup Drives

I'm using two of these to clone my folk's OS drive on their computers. In the event that their 120 GB SSDs fail, I can just swap this (much slower) drive in with their OS and programs and they're largely back up and running in 10 minutes. So far so good as both I ordered were recognized, formatted easily and had zero problems with the cloning software.Testing them was successful as the computer booted with these in place of their regular SSDs. Super slow compared to the SSDs, but they work and that's what's I'm after. Aside from the slow performance, I can't tell that the computers are loading off of these rather than the SSDs.I can't complain for the price and what I'm using them for. Solid back ups, very low cost and acceptable emergency performance. One last note, these drives are recognized by Western Digital's Acronis True Image software as HGST is now part of Western Digital.DO NOT USE Acronis True Image as there is a serious... 5/5 D.L.C (United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A great cheap option for storage that makes a lot of noise

This is a very simple drive that is ideal for basic laptops or gaming consoles. It does its job well and is actually quite fast for a 5400 RPM drive. However, -1 star for the noise level. This is one of the loudest hard drives I've ever seen. When reading and writing, the thing makes a lot of noise. Nonetheless, the noise is really only audible if you are right up next to it (if it were in your laptop in your lap for instance) or if you are in a very quiet room. For a gaming console, this is pretty much perfect. For a laptop, I would only recommend this if you want the cheapest option available. If you're willing to pitch in a few more dollars, this day and age offers SSDs, which, for laptops, are a dream come true due to the fact that they are not susceptible to mechanical damage like HDDs are, so you don't have to nearly have a heart attack every time you drop your laptop, thinking you might have just killed your storage device. But if you're like me,... 4/5 Whib - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
