Furthermore, the European Union established clear basic principles for the collection, storage and use of personal data by governments, businesses and other organizations or individuals in Directive 95/46/EC and Directive 2002/58/EC on Privacy and Electronic communications. Nonetheless, the twenty-?rst century citizen – utilizing the full potential of what ICT-technology has to offer – seems to develop a digital persona that becomes increasingly part of his individual social identity. From this perspective, control over personal information is control over an aspect of the identity one projects in the world. The right to privacy is the freedom from unreasonable constraints on one’s own identity. Transactiondata–bothtraf?candlocationdata–deserveourparticularattention. As we make phone calls, send e-mails or SMS messages, data trails are generated within public networks that we use for these communications. While traf?c data are necessary for the provision of communication services, they are also very sensitive data. They can give a complete picture of a person’s contacts, habits, interests, act- ities and whereabouts. Location data, especially if very precise, can be used for the provision of services such as route guidance, location of stolen or missing property, tourist information, etc. In case of emergency, they can be helpful in dispatching assistance and rescue teams to the location of a person in distress. However, p- cessing location data in mobile communication networks also creates the possibility of permanent surveillance.

    Long lasting sidekick

4/5 R. J. C. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Book Essential 750 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) Have used it for 8 years and still no problems! Had to replace the power cord but that was strictly the cat's fault and not a faulty product. Sure, I have several portable hard drives laying around but this one is the trusty sidekick that stands next to my computer speakers. Transfer time isn't bad because of the USB 2.0. I definitely got my money's worth out of this product and recommend Western Digital for all your digital storage problems. I would say the only negative is the external power source, but it's not a terribly big deal since I don't lug this (nor do I need to) around with my laptop. V2.0 Of The My Book Series Is Out - Will It Be More Reliable Than V1.0?

[Update: 3/2009: It's been more than a year since I wrote this lengthy review and I wanted to return and let people know how these drives are performing.I have a total of ten of these drives - four the newer series referenced here, six the slightly older model that looks a bit different but is otherwise interchangeable. I am happy to report than only one drive suffered some intermittent failures in read/writing since purchase. No data was ever lost, but the problem was becoming annoying and I replaced it using their warranty service. I've had no drive failures otherwise and no data integrity problems. I find it important not to block the ventilation holes and am always on the lookout for any early signs of drive failure, such as ticking noises, grinding, or excessive drive whine, and have noted nothing thus far.Overall, I am fully satisfied with this drive series and believe WD is definitely proven competent in the external drive marketplace.]... 4/5 Phillip M. Great price, great performance, looks sleek to boot.

I have been buying and using external harddrives for ages. When I shoot video, and do editing, I store the finished footage on these harddrives. When I shoot images and pictures I store backups of my raw files, and finished psds/jpg.Obviously, these files are very important to me, and thanks to past experience, I refuse to trust 1 drive to house all my important stuff.I owned another external harddrive, and it died, it was my incredible misfortune. I was switching to a new computer, and took the files off my harddrive, onto a new drive, (that I had for over a month and tested fine) and after my new computer arrived (and subsequently sold my previous computer) I went to backup my photos and the drive started smoking. I lost a whole trips worth of photos (40+gb) tons of panoramas (that I spent hours constructing) it all went to pot. I learned then, I'm never going to buy any other brand of external harddrive than a Western Digital, and I will always backup... 5/5 Jason (NC, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great external hard drive for backup and everyday use

5/5 Rapolsive (Dirty Jersey) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Western Digital WDG1C3200N My Book Premium Edition 320 GB USB 2.0/Firewire400 External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) I bought this product mainly to backup my files and free up some room on my aging laptop. You can find cheaper and more expensive models but I felt this one would do well.So far I had it for a few months and works well. I backed up my laptop a few times. I only backed up the files I use, not the whole computer, which filled about 8% of the drive. Since everything was working well I decided to move all my music and videos on there. My laptop is connected 24-7 and the drive is working probably 6 hours of the day. I have no complaints. The blue light does cool swirly patterns when writing/reading and when shutting off. Nothing real crazy but a cool detail. So far it's great!

5/5 Harmon (Winchester, VA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Western Digital WDG1C3200N My Book Premium Edition 320 GB USB 2.0/Firewire400 External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) I've only had this drive a short time, but so far I've had no problems. The 500GB MyBook received some less than favorable reviews, so I purchased the 320GB drive. It was easy to set up, and the included backup software is convenient and simple to configure. At first I had it connected to my computer by USB, but when I purchased a Firewire card to connect a digital movie camera, I reconnected the MyBook drive to Firewire without a problem. I strongly recommend an external hard drive for daily backups and an occasional disk image, and the Western Digital MyBook 320 GB drive is a good choice. WD MY Book Premium 320GB

4/5 Mim Z (Santa Cruz, CA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Western Digital WDG1C3200N My Book Premium Edition 320 GB USB 2.0/Firewire400 External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) This external hard drive was a great addition to my PC. 2 months after I started using it, my PC hard drive crashed. Since I run a small business with the PC, this was potentially devastating. After installing a new HD, I recovered within a couple of days because I had my data backed up. I highly recommend backing up, at least daily. This is an easy way to do it because you can schedule when and what type of backup you want either manual or automatic. The only warning I have is that there is not a lot of documentation that comes with the unit and the online support is not easy to access. Not a single proglem yet.

5/5 Deimos - See all my reviews This review is from: WD My Book Office Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) I have had two of these drives for about 2 1/2 years and have yet to have a single issue. They work great, turn themselves off when not needed which really saves life, and read/write speed has been very fasy via USB with my Imac. I do not have one bad thing to say about these drives, I have had several Maxtor and Seagate drives fail since buying these. Works with OSX and windows.
