    From the Mac perspective

5/5 Kindle Customer (Des Moines, Iowa USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Iomega Desktop Hard Drive 500 GB Hi-Speed USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - 33654 (Personal Computers) I bought this because it said it worked with OSX. I know USB is supposed to be a universal thing, but of course all us Mac junkies have had our issues here and there - even with hardware that's SUPPOSED to work. Well, no such problems here. I plugged it in, booted my computer, and the mount point appeared within 30 seconds in the Finder. The aesthetics of the product are nice - it's small, and you can stand it up so it doesn't take up much space. It's very very quiet, only a bit of 'chik chik chik' if you're moving gigabytes back and forth. And the price is oh-so-right for this much space. So if you're a Mac user and looking for some add-on storage, this is the one for you. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 22, 2007

Works as advertised. Lots of storage. Easy to use.

    Long term review.

This drive worked good for the first 2 years, but then it puked. At least I should say, I put the drive on a Linux NAS, and the NAS kept telling me it was bad. I reformatted it to Ext3 file system and it didn't help.Reformatting it back to NTFS allows it to work on Windows, so perhaps its an incompatibility with Linux.However... that is not why I gave it 1 star. The drive has a Seagate ST3500830AS drive; Barracuda 7200RPM. But the unit only has a 1 year warranty. The drive is not recognized by Seagate as one of theirs, and there is a label on the drive that this is an OEM drive, and you have to go through IOmega for any warranty, service, etc. Also, Seagate's diagnostics will not work with the drive - at least in the IOmega enclosure (I have no way to test the drive otherwise as I don't have any internal 3.5" drive bays in my laptop. So my recommendation would be to buy a 3rd party generic drive enclosure and buy a standard... 1/5 aw (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) So far so good ... [Mac Setup Hints!]

I received the drive today (free 2-day Amazon Prime shipping rocks!). After an unintuitive setup and poor user manual instructions, I searched the Iomega website's support pages for help and used their free 1-to-1 chat option (free while your product is in warranty) to get everything figured out. Here's what I learned ... (NOTE: I am using a Mac. I have no idea what the PC setup is like. It's also important to note that these procedures are only good for THIS UltraMax disk because it can do RAID 1 and has 2, 500GB drives. If you buy a different kind of Iomega UltraMax, you'll have to do your own setup legwork or risk ruining your drive.)The drive comes formatted as HFS+ for Mac set to RAID 0. I wanted mine set for RAID 1 to have a redundant backup of all of my important files and a cloned disk image of my boot drive. The procedure to use RAID 1, regardless of what you may read in your user manual, is to let the disk mount as it is out of the box -- just unpack it and plug... 4/5 Amazon Customer (Virginia) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) originally please, now disgusted (three bad power supplies)

I own three of these drives, purchased at different times. I ordered three because initially I was pleased with the performance, and not bothered by the noise. However since then I have had three power supply failures. Each time the drives start to spin up and down, and finally the drive won't mount any more. (Two replacements were under warranty, I'm having to pay for the third.) Even when the drives are working, I have decided that they are noisier than I would like.I would encourage anyone looking at this drive to look at the G-Technology, G-DRIVE Q 1TB: I don't own one yet, but it's what I'm going to purchase next, despite the increased cost. The reviews (all over, not just Amazon) are very favorable in terms of performance, noise, and... 1/5 MR Gregory F. Welch (Carrboro, NC) - See all my reviews, December 2, 2007

    Works as advertized

I have two of these, one on my MB Pro, and one on my XP Machine. The firewire 800 is good enough to render video to without problems. They have been running for several months and have had no problems. I have shared folders on them to my network, and have had no problem watching movies off of them over the network. They have single drive versions of this now, and maybe that is why the price has come down almost a hundred bucks. FYI, the drive comes formated for MACs. It gives you instructions on how to format it for Windows.Edit 08 June 09 ** I wish I knew how to downgrade to two stars.I purchased two of them. After about 6 months one of them started having problems starting up. It would make a clicking sound for a progressively longer time before finally spooling up. This last time I tried several things, but could not get it to spool up (even after 24 hours). After reading a review that mentioned the power supplies, I tried swapping them. Now they both... 5/5 James D. Sjoblom - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I have two of these, one on my MB Pro, and one on my XP Machine.
