Detaches too easily, like all the rest . . . .

When will external hard drive manufacturers design a drive that doesn't become detached from your computer if you accidentally touch the USB connection cable? These -- just like all the rest -- become disconnected easily, and you get those messages telling you that you have improperly disconnected the unit.Whenever you do that, you risk destroying all the data on the drive.Alas, there's a dilemma: Do you download once to the drive each month, disconnect it, and then, thereafter, only back-up online? (What about privacy issues there?) Or do you buy three of these, back up on two, and keep one plugged in for ongoing backups (until you accidentally pull the plug one too many times). This works, of course, to store the data. But that isn't the issue. The real issue here, in buying one of these gizmos is how to avoid accidentally disconnecting it while using it.This does NOT address that issue. You can remove the virtual dirve...easily

I haven't had it long, but so far it's a 5-star drive considering the cost per GB and the peace of mind from the drop protection. I also haven't had any problems with the connection yet, so we'll see how that holds up.The one reservation I had was the virtual CD partition. There should be no reservations. If you open the program in the virtual CD, there is a setting(under virtual CD tab) to show, hide, or remove the partition. You click the button and update. If you want the encryption(which I do) you either show it for use on multiple PCs or hide it if you're on one PC and don't want it to show up. If you don't want encryption, you remove it. It's that simple. Maybe this is an update, because I can't understand why everyone else is finding it so difficult - I discovered this in 30 seconds.Other than that, the drive has performed as fast as anything else on my USB 2.0 ports(unfortunately I don't have 3.0 on my dock yet) and looks nice enough to sit on my desk... 4/5 Chris W. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) AWESOME Little Drive

5/5 Big E (Yamhill County, OR) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Iomega eGo 320 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400 Portable External Hard Drive 34403 (Ruby Red) (Personal Computers) This is an awesome little drive!I purchased it to create full backups of my iMac (OS X 10.5.5) that I can store in my safe deposit box, and I haven't been disappointed. It comes pre-formatted for OS X, so you can just plug it in and go (OS X recognizes it immediately after plugging it in via USB). I chose to reformat with Leopard just to ensure that any file system changes under Leopard were taken into account, and the reformatting process took all of 30 seconds, no problems. It provided great performance with about 260GB being backed up over USB in about 4 hours and, in the event of an emergency, allows you to boot your iMac directly off the drive (using Firewire). It is physically small (about the size of a small pocket hooch flask), is well constructed and feels very solid and durable in your hand, and is dead quiet when operating.I am thrilled with this purchase and with Iomega's excellent support for Macs and I'll be back for more! Just what I needed

I was filling up my iBook hard drive with iTunes. I shifted the library off to an external drive.I had some problems with USB drives on my iBook thinking they had been improperly ejected because they weren't geting enough power from the USB. The WD I was using had no external power supply capability and I couldn't use the "double-USB" cord because my iPod was plugged in as well. I order this Iomega eGo FireWire. When it arrived, I read it was already formatted for Mac (the others I had to reformat). I plugged it into the fire wire port and within 10 seconds, the iBook recognised it. I pointed my iTunes library to it, plugged the old external into the "double USB" cord to prevent problems and hit "consolitate library". The iBook and eGo did the rest. Since then (about 4 months so far) not a single problem. FINALLY!!!I highly recommend the FireWire if you have a Mac. I also have eGo USB only versions for my PC (cheaper, but I recommend... 5/5 Mark H. (Olive Branch, MS) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Back that Mac up!

I purchased the Iomega eGo with FireWire in Ruby Red several months ago. I bought it to use for backups, and to move media files off my hard drive to free up space. I was a little disappointed when it arrived. The red color is rather dull and the texture is unpleasant to touch. The shape is very nice, though, and it's small enough to easily fit in a laptop bag or large pocket.Included was a two-headed USB 2.0 cable and a 6-6 FireWire cable. I've only used the FireWire cable, and found it wanting. The girth is substantial, but the length is too short. The cord is not very flexible either. The short length and stiffness of the cord caused the drive to fall more than once when it was plugged in. (Iomega does sell a rubber X-vest for the eGo, which might protect it to some extent.) The last straw was when my iBook didn't recognize the drive when it was plugged in with that cord. Now I only use the 6' white FireWire cable that came with one of my Macs. Much improvement; the... 4/5 Cherry Sunshine (Libertopia, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
