You can remove the virtual dirve...easily

I haven't had it long, but so far it's a 5-star drive considering the cost per GB and the peace of mind from the drop protection. I also haven't had any problems with the connection yet, so we'll see how that holds up.The one reservation I had was the virtual CD partition. There should be no reservations. If you open the program in the virtual CD, there is a setting(under virtual CD tab) to show, hide, or remove the partition. You click the button and update. If you want the encryption(which I do) you either show it for use on multiple PCs or hide it if you're on one PC and don't want it to show up. If you don't want encryption, you remove it. It's that simple. Maybe this is an update, because I can't understand why everyone else is finding it so difficult - I discovered this in 30 seconds.Other than that, the drive has performed as fast as anything else on my USB 2.0 ports(unfortunately I don't have 3.0 on my dock yet) and looks nice enough to sit on my desk... 4/5 Chris W. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Reliable and travels well

I've had one of the eGo 500GB Iomega drives now for over a year. It's Red, with the rubber stretchy case to protect the drive from knocks and bumps. At first, yes I also experienced the very odd and annoying pre-installed software. Iomega needs to simply offer the drive without any of this software so that you don't have to jump through hoops to disable it. After reading a number of the other reviews, it's clear that most of the other reviewers really hated the software. After having gone on the site and removed it, then I was able to wipe the drive and use it the way I wanted to. It has been very reliable. It has traveled with me all over the U.S. and also on our last documentary trip to Peru. No problems. At one point I dumped everything on the drive and downloaded it to another drive, erased it, and started over with it as a portable drive to quickly transfer media. No problems. The drive is primarily used for dumping Flash media from our DSLR which creates large... 4/5 R. Shaw (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews, April 23, 2013

This is the improved eGo 500GB USB drive

Iomega's eGo 500GB portable USB HDD has been redesigned. When you purchase, make sure you are buying the new version.I bought this portable HDD specifically to back up my iTunes directory, which is approaching 300GB. I also own another Iomega 500 GB portable HDD, and when I ordered this one I thought I was getting another identical unit. This one has been updated, and apparently for the better. This one is shaped like a slightly large deck of cards rather than as a whiskey flask configuration like the older model. It also has nice little rubber feet. But the big improvement seems to be that it is somewhat thriftier regarding whether it could draw sufficient power from the USB ports. This unit easily functioned in one of my computers in which the USB port was insufficient to power the earlier model. I do not know if this is a quirk or whether Iomega improved the design.Further substantiating the theory that this unit is redesigned to be more... 5/5 Roger J. Iomega Rocks!

After using Simpletech and Western Digital drives of this type, there is absolutely no comparison in the quality of workmanship between the Iomega brand and the others. The case is solid metal and constructed with close fitting seams that make this a well designed and manufactured piece. I travel frequently and carry this device in my carry--on bag with my laptop and have not had any issues with seam separation or other visible defects. By accident my bag fell out of a chair onto the tile floor in the airport and I expected to see some damage to the unit and not a scratch or visible mark was evident, but my laptop did get some dings out of that fall. It takes rough handling much better than the Western Digital and Simpletech competing products. The only negative I have found with this drive is it will not run with only one USB port powering it and does require two. So when I have to hook up my USB aircard, mouse, phone charger, blue tooth device charger, I do have to pull out a... 5/5 Bad Dude (Florida) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I've taken it with me from one end of the country to the other and it's already full of files (movies, documents, photos, music, software, etc.). It's fast, well-built, and convenient.
