About this book
This volume contains the papers presented at the 8th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2009).The symposium was held at the Te- nische Universit ̈ at Dortmund, Germany, during June 4–6, 2009. The main theme of the SEA series is the role of experimentation and of algorithm engineering techniques in the design and evaluation of algorithms and data structures. Contributions are supported by experimental evaluation, methodological issues in the design and interpretation of experiments, the use of (meta-)heuristics, or application-driven case studies that deepen the und- standing of a problem’s complexity. For each symposium, papers are solicited from all areas of algorithmic engineering research. Previous meetings, under the name of “Workshop on Experimental Al- rithms” (WEA), were held in Riga (Latvia, 2001), Ascona (Switzerland, 2003), Angra dos Reis (Brazil, 2004), Santorini (Greece, 2005), Menorca Island (Spain, 2006), Rome (Italy, 2007), and Provincetown (USA, 2008). The ProgramCommittee ofSEA 2009received64 submissions.Eachsubm- sion was reviewed by at least three ProgramCommittee members and evaluated on its quality, originality, and relevance to the symposium. Overall, the Program Committee wrote249 reviews with the help of almost 100 trusted external ref- ees. The Committee selected 23 papers, leading to an acceptance rate of 35.9%. The decision process was made electronically using the EasyChair conference management system. In additionto the accepted contributions, this volumealso containsabstracts ofthe invitedtalks givenby Heinz Bast(Intel), MichaelA. Bender (Stony Brook ˆ University and Tokutek, Inc.), and Marc Schoenauer (INRIA Saclay – Ile-de- France).

Great Price/performance ratio make this a great buy. For me consistently faster than FireCuda.

I ended up purchasing this drive after I received a defective and then poor performing replacement Firecuda 2TB. I was prepared to be disappointed after replacing my Caviar Black. I have to say while it is about 20 Mbps slower than the Caviar it is still very fast and very quiet, especially compared to the noisy WD drive. The 4K perfomance is pretty dismal, but in real world use I just don't see much difference. I am a gamer and use my PC as a small office server. So it is very fast with a Samsung EVO 850 primary drive, OCed 3570K, GTX 1060, Crucial Ballistex memory etc. The Caviar is clearly the best mechanical drive out there but at twice the price per MB I'm not sure it is worth the price. I guess the proof will be in the durablity and the drive does get warm with long and large data transfers.-----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 5.1.2 x64 (C) 2007-2016 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/... 5/5 fraamus - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) An otherwise decent drive ruined by complex firmware and garbage customer support.

Where to start? Drive runs as expected and according to official stats. Except for one thing, the noise. It has a humming issue due to bad firmware that comes with these drives. If you're one of the unlucky customers to get a drive that makes the noise, you'll have to flash the firmware yourself.Sounds simple enough right? Every other company gives you a handy dandy executable that does it all for you. You run it, reboot, it flashes your FW, and you go about your business. At worst, you have to make a CD or something and just follow the prompts when you boot. Make way for Seagate. Consumer friendly is far from their target here. Get ready to read 15 pages of instruction on linux based SSH commands. Just to flash your FW. And after you finish reading them, marvel at the fact that even that doesn't help you figure out this ridiculous firmware installation. This review is from: Seagate 6TB BarraCuda Pro 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST6000DM004) (Personal Computers) I have two of these drives. 6TB. Do they work? Yes. Do they work fast on a RAID 0? Yes. Do they fail. Yes.I had one drive fail after 3 weeks. They come with the rescue plan1 but Im not sure what that means because SeaGate is still trying to charge me $1,500 for data recovery.(Yes, I have a back up but I swapped my back up to a new server and in the middle of transferring everything to the back up again, the drive failed.)I have not received my RAID 0 back yet to see if everything is truly ok, some people have reported lots of corrupt files upon return. I have a small server with 4 WD NAS drives in it and I've never had a single problem.Stay far away form these drives. FAR AWAY! This review is from: Seagate 1TB Pipeline HD SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive (ST1000VM002) (Personal Computers) I purchased this hard-drive to replace a Western Digital AV-GP in a security camera system NVR that failed after about 6 months of use. I did not want to purchase another WD drive because of the short life in the NVR and two prior WD desktop drive failures. This Seagate has been installed about a month. Not enough time to really know if it will be reliable but so far, so good. It is very quiet. The marketing pictures are not accurate - the mechanism are completely enclosed, not exposed as shown in the silly photos.Be aware that this hard-drive is intended for video recording/streaming applications not PC use. Great starting drive for new computer or just for a little extra space on and old one.

In general this HDD (hard disk drive) does everything I need it too for a first HDD. I recently built a new computer for my brother-in-law and this a decent drive for an OS (operating system) drive. From there if space becomes an issue I plan on getting a bigger secondary HDD (2-4 terabyte) for media backups, games, etc. I mainly recommend something like this for an OS drive if money is part of the issue, if money is not an issue than go with SSD (solid state drive) for an OS. The reason I would prefer SSD's for an OS is that an SSD will most likely never crash, at least I personally do not know of one crashing yet, but anything is possible. However, I have had several HDD's crash on me, and yes when it's your OS drive it's a pain, so if you have the money go for a SSD for your OS drive.Remember that you can not just mount in box, hook up power and SATA cables, start it up and all is well. Be sure to run a SMART test before you use it so when the thirty-first day comes you aren't screwed. If you can't detect the drive follow these instructions.Open Disk Management (start- run- diskmgmt.msc)Look for your USB drive (or take a screenshot and post it back so we can tell you which drive it is)Delete the current partitionCreate a new partition using NTFS. make sure to check quick formatAfter that you can assign it a drive letter. 3/5 M David - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Wireless Mobile Portable Hard Drive Storage 500GB STDC500101 (White) (Personal Computers) The drive seems to function OK but sadly you cannot use it at all without using Seagate's media software. I was hoping I could access it thru Wifi and it would appear on a PC or phone as available storage. It does NOT do this so if you want it for that, forget it. I wouldn't mind using the Seagate wireless app, but it's clunky, slow and not very intuitive. Their own instructions for making a playlist do not work because the menu options differ from what they tell you. Also the charge could last a little longer. If we are playing music from this drive it only lasts for about 2 hours. So my conclusion is this is OK product, but the software that runs it needs great improvement. This review is from: Seagate Wireless Mobile Portable Hard Drive Storage 500GB STDC500402 (Red) (Personal Computers) First one I got was busted and Amazon refunded quickly. Second worked fine Streams well to a single device or two with same type OS. Did not work well if one was android and other iOS. Third device would always cause buffering. Internet pass thru and app worked great even better than toshiba. I gave this one to my brother and got toshiba on sale for $59. Toshiba has USB 3.0 instead of USB 2, 1TB instead of 500GB, SD reader and backup, stream to 4 devices of any make with little to no buffering. Seagate Software is easier to use and setup. Had this been my Primary drive with the OS on it I would have been screwed. In the past I have had very good success with Seagate Barracuda HDD's, thus the 2nd star is for past Seagate performance. The DateCode on this drive is 11164, which translates to a manufacturer date of Oct 19, 2010.So what happened?Did my HDD bounce around between stores & warehouses for years and got dropped 1 too many times?I'm "Not Saying This", but was this a refurbished HDD pulled from a retired system? My guess is I'll never know.I just ordered a "Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD" to replace it. I know this is new.Hope this helps you make your decision. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 8, 2016

    Bad drive.

I bought two of these drives for using in a RAID 1 array in a Synology DS210j Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. After 6 weeks of operation, one of the drives failed. When the drive went bad, I contacted Synology and told them the errors the NAS was sending me. It indicated the Reallocated Sector Count showed a failing drive and their take on the drive was that it was failing. At any rate, the NAS won't mount the volume. The drive has a 3 year warranty, and the failed drive was well within that time period. Seagate insists that you download their diagnostic software to test the drive prior to returning, as they claim a high return rate of good drives. I am sure that is true, but the diagnostic software can only be run on a DOS/Windows system. Since the NAS runs Linux, the diagnostic software obviously won't run on it. Otherwise, all I have is a laptop, so how do I connect an internal 3.5" drive to it?They do allow you to return a drive without... 2/5 aw (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) (Not quite) Brand new 250GB Seagate ST250DM000 -- Edited Review

Update 2015-OCT-27Well I had to return one of the hard disks. It just stopped working. Usually drives will show some bad sectors first, but one of the drives simply died. Upon removing the faulty drive I noticed a sticker on it I somehow didn't see at first (picture attached). Evidently the drive had been sent back because it was faulty (I'm guessing to Seagate) and Seagate cleared it as okay on "08-17-2015" -- and in fact the drive wasn't okay. So this retailer, like many others, is selling drives that may have been previously used and rubber stamped as okay. Finity India had me ship the drive back and requested a copy of the USPS receipt (for the tracking number and shipping cost) which they then credited to my account. They were polite. So I'm docking one star because these drives may be used in the sense you may get one that's been rubber stamped as okay when it's not.------I ordered (2) 250GB Seagate ST3250318AS bare drives. Perfect for PS3 upgrade

This drive is very quiet and seems to run just as smooth as any drive that comes with a brand new PS3. I seem to notice a little bit of a faster load time (by seconds, nothing too major but definitely helpful overall) in all things including boot up, going into the PSN store and games loading from the HDD or running with install data from a disc. Some might say the PS3 doesn't work any faster than what is accepted by the system, but the double cache size does make a noticable difference to me. I used to be a Western Digital fan until I had 3 of their laptop drives die after 3 years of use. I understand that electronics and computer components do not last forever but 3 years or less is not acceptable. I have PC hard drives that lasted 5 or more years before starting to show signs of problems. The WD drives all became useless and had more bad sectors than the drive could handle in less than 3 years. I decided to make a change to Seagate due to the technology of the data access that the... 5/5 Project Prime (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) PS4 Pro

What more do i need to say. Bought it for use on my PS4 Pro and installed it in the Pro when i got it. Works great and you will notice things do load faster.Just remember you will need to download the current firmware for PS4 (pro & original use same firmware) and it needs to be full firmware download (the one thats over 900mb) to setup the PS4 operating system. Use a USB and make sure you download the file directly into the folder itself (PS4 > UPDATE > then the file).Dont forget to do a system to system transfer if you have a PS4 already that has games and things on it. It will take a couple hours (around 2 or 3 hours usually), but if you play MMOs (FFXIV, Star Trek, Warframe, Elder Scrolls and so on) it will take longer unless you delete the games off your system before doing the system transfer. Thats because MMOs have a ton of files from always being updated and its just easier to redownload them from PSN.You can also use that same... 5/5 Bronxchulo - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent solution for PS4 users

So far so good! I'm a PS4 owner who was quickly running out of space thanks to those larger titles. Get used to it, they'll only get bigger and bigger as time goes on. I did run into a HECK of a lot of trouble getting the PS4 to initialize with this drive, so here's some tips that ultimately worked for me:- Download the FULL file from the Playstation site, mine was around 870 mb for the most current update. There's a much smaller file, around 400 mb I believe it was, that will NOT do the trick for a new HD.- Your drive must have 2 GB of free space and it must be FAT32. I tried this on a 1 GB FAT32 drive, no luck. Tried on a 500 GB external drive, but it wasn't FAT so no luck. Formatted that drive to FAT32 and finally had success.- Toss that 870+ mb file on the drive in a folder named UPDATE within PS4. So it should be Drive -> PS4 -> UPDATE -> fileBe sure to backup your PS4 as it definitely is a huge help especially in regards to system... 5/5 Ron - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Barely six days of use and already failing

After 6 days of usage, this drive showed 8 uncorrectable sector errors. I have many other hard drives from other brands and they have never developed a single sector error in years of usage (and by usage I mean left on for weeks at a time). This is a pathetic and completely unacceptable reliability record and I would have expected better from the Porsche + LaCie brands. The drive inside is a Seagate ST2000LM007-1R8174 according to disk information, so it didn't really surprise me that the drive would be faulty, since the other drive that has failed me was a 3 TB Seagate Backup Plus Desktop drive. Seagate received a class-action lawsuit for the failure of that drive.I used it like any other drive: unpack, format and use. I didn't use any USB hubs, different cables or anything that might have caused a problem.Everything was going fine until the drive suddenly turned off its light (note: USB port is not faulty, I have tried it on other ports, and I have used... 1/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) " It worked great until it didn't

1/5 Joe (Pittsburgh) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: LaCie Porsche Design P'9220 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive 302000 (Personal Computers) This died in 4 months. My computer (iMac) was getting ready to go kaput, so I bought this to use as a backup. It died in 4 months. I kept getting an error message "A USB device is drawing too much power and has been disabled." It worked great until it didn't. I didn't even have it set to backup automatically--I did it manually every week or so, so it wasn't being overworked. And it wasn't moved around a lot--I connected it to my computer and it stayed put until it died. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 23, 2016

Performs well once properly formatted, but that can be difficult under Windows

I've been using LaCie portable drives for at least 10 years now and haven't had any long-term issues with them either when constantly powered and used or when stored long-term un-powered. However it has become inevitable that I need to spend serious effort making them work on my Windows7 systems. I've deducted two stars due to the difficulty and tech skills needed to make them work, but give them three stars because they do work in the end. I'm sure many have returned their units thinking they are defective when it's actually the fault of the setup utilities (I did just this with my first Minimus drives). Bottom line, if they won't configure following the factory procedures there's little reason to care why they don't work. I wouldn't hesitate to return them if the configuration app fails and you don't want to tackle the tech job of making them work.I create a single partition on the drives and use them primarily for automatic backup of both NAS servers and Windows... 3/5 JMoomaw (Portland, OR, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
