This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex/Backup Plus Upgrade Cable USB 3.0 STAE-104 Fits current drives (the newest model) (Electronics) Product works. Two caveats. First, while the picture shows black components, the item received had a white cable and an adapter with a strip of silver on the top. Second, the adapter does not actually fit my FreeAgent GoFlex drive purchased circa 2012. Not a problem for me since I only needed the cable but if you need the adapter (or care about colors) you should ask some questions before ordering. Working, but beware of bad sectors; always keep backups!

I received this drive 8 months ago and it is still working in an acceptable manner by my standards. For more details, please continue reading.Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors.I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents... 4/5 Milos Ivanovic (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Died during backup after less than 2 hours.

I was pleased to initially get this backup HDD, it is small, portable, clean design, with a nice black color. It was packed in an easy to open and protective box and the basic instructions were simple and clear, plug the HDD into your computer with the accompanying cord and download the Seagate Dashboard application to begin backing up. I did just that, and initially seemed to be up to a great start. The Dashboard app isn't fancy, but appeared to be sufficient to get the job done. However, fast forward about 2 hours to ~80% backed up, and the HDD starts to occasionally beep. I was not aware the drive had any speakers so inititally I figured I had heard something outside my house. Gradually over the next 10 minutes the beeping became more and more frequent until it was obvious they were coming from the drive and were coming out about every second. I also noticed at this point the drive was no longer backing up. Thinking something was amiss, I unplugged the drive, restarted... 1/5 Amazon Addict (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent Hard Drive - Great Price. Pull drives for use in Laptop/PS4.

Hard to go wrong here. If you are using this as an external drive, this product has 2TB in very small space and is USB powered. The drive itself only takes 0.7-2.3W to operate! On Mac OSX 10.9.2 running the included Paragon NTFS driver, I was able to see write rates in 8-10 MB/sec with USB 2.0. On a Windows 7 Machine I averaged 18 MB/Sec; 14 MB/sec running the latest 8.1 update.I pulled the drives from two of these units (instructions below - photos to be added soon) for use in my laptop. This product is the only way I know of to obtain the 9.5mm tall, 2.5-in 2T Samsung Spinpoint M9T drive(s). Note: the 2TB version has 1 drive, the 4TB has 2 drives. After installing them in my laptop (has 3 internal HDD bays with SATA connections, 1st bay has OS, apps, etc. on 500GB SSD), I tested data txfr speeds. I moved 1.5 TB of data from one drive to another with average speeds of 194 MB/Sec in Windows 8.1. Laptop now has 4.5 TB of hard drive capacity.Have also... 5/5 Amazon Reviewer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Exceptional little piece of Hardware

I read nearly all the reviews on this little tool and decided that more than enough folks had found it functional to take a chance on it. Not much of a chance really as it costs next to nothing. If it didn't work, no great loss. If it did, then a great buy... Work? Oh yeah! Right out of the box this minuscule unit hooked up to 11 different old hard drives that have been sitting in a box for as much as 18 years in one case. Worked with every single one of them! Set up and connection is child's play for a lobotomized sea slug. Someone in one review complained that the instructions weren't adequate. Apparently that reviewer is the type of person who has issues with 'Insert tab A into slot B'. It's that simple. All you need to be aware of with older drives is the jumper position ( remember jumpers? ). With Western Digital brand drives, remove the jumper entirely for 'Single'. On the other brands I had ( Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum), I found that setting the jumper to 'Master' was... 5/5 R. West (New Hampshire, USA) - See all my reviews, February 18, 2016

Works well, but a few things to consider

I used it to upsize several SATA bootable drives. In one example I went from a 160G HD to 240G SSD, and this was done by pulling the original HD from the netbook and plugging it into the standalone box along with the inbound SSD, then pressing the button for 3-seconds to start. The box does come with a USB cable, but it is needed for the initial step. It is used for mounting one or both drives into the directory of a host computer, where one can view and use them just like any other USB drive. As discussed by others, the new drive gets partitioned as the old one was, so I rounded up a command-line utility (DiskPart included in WindowsXP/7/etc) and extend the partition out. Note that this utility and others will not allow you to change a partition on a currently active boot drive. Therefore I wouldn't want to immediately install the new drive back into my one-slot machine. Instead the USB cable is used to mount the drive onto a bootable machine, possibly this machine with... 4/5 Jerry Robison (Silicon Valley, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) does NOT work with Toshiba Laptops! (And possibily all laptops)

What I was using it for:I needed to clone my old hhd (that is still in my in my laptop) to a new ssd (that I tethered to the laptop from this adapter). What I did:I bought a Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5-Inch SATA III drive and this Kingwin USB 2.0 to SATA Adapter and used the Samsung cloning software included with the ssd drive to clone the drive. What happened. :(The ssd drive started to accept the data for about a minute or so, then the program froze on me. I had to power the laptop off to regain control of the laptop. Thinking that I did something wrong, I read the manual and followed the manual to the letter and started the process over with high hopes. The second time it stopped again 1 min into the cloning process. Frustrated, I uninstalled my antivirus, internet, and other background running programs. The third time I tried it, it failed again.
