    Seagate 1TB hold up!

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the... 5/5 Vidsavage - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Spontaneous Disconnect/Reconnect Problems

The drive performs well; I ran the HD Tune tests and was impressed with the drive performance, using the eSATA cable attachment with my Sony laptop. And, 1.5 TB in a small, portable, self-powered configuration is a really cool thing.Unfortunately, the drive spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects on its own. Most of the time, this is not that big of a deal, but for some applications (like, say, Windows 7 backup :), the disconnect causes the application to stop whatever it's doing.I use this drive for daily file backups, keeping a portable system image for recovery and I keep some large movies on it, as well. The Seagate support forums are absolutely 'lit up' with this issue and Seagate's universal response is to reformat and try again (i.e. "...you're using it wrong...").My belief is this: the Seagate firmware that will engage a sleep mode on its own; then, when an I/O request comes in, the time required to spin-up causes an I/O... 2/5 Kenneth F. It will fail you when you need it the most, Don't waste your money.

Like most people here, I bought this to backup my files in case my computer had a problem that would otherwise make me lose my files. Two years after I bought this device, the inevitable happened. My computer refused to start up. I thought I was fortunate because I had my files all backed up.However, NO. This drive did not serve the purpose I bought it for. It refused to let me transfer the files from it to my new computer. It had something to do with the version of the software (Seagate GoFlex Backup) that associates with the drive and which allows you to restore your files.Apparently, there is a "Pro" version of this software that also lets you to restore your files in what I thought would be a more intuitive way. I thought that might help so I got the 30-day free trial version of that (seriously? After spending $80 on the drive, Seagate wants to charge you even more just to let you get to your files? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.). If that wasn't enough,... 1/5 Anon Y. Mous - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Working, but beware of bad sectors; always keep backups!

I received this drive 8 months ago and it is still working in an acceptable manner by my standards. For more details, please continue reading.Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors.I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents... 4/5 Milos Ivanovic (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Died during backup after less than 2 hours.

I was pleased to initially get this backup HDD, it is small, portable, clean design, with a nice black color. It was packed in an easy to open and protective box and the basic instructions were simple and clear, plug the HDD into your computer with the accompanying cord and download the Seagate Dashboard application to begin backing up. I did just that, and initially seemed to be up to a great start. The Dashboard app isn't fancy, but appeared to be sufficient to get the job done. However, fast forward about 2 hours to ~80% backed up, and the HDD starts to occasionally beep. I was not aware the drive had any speakers so inititally I figured I had heard something outside my house. Gradually over the next 10 minutes the beeping became more and more frequent until it was obvious they were coming from the drive and were coming out about every second. I also noticed at this point the drive was no longer backing up. Thinking something was amiss, I unplugged the drive, restarted... 1/5 Amazon Addict (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) very fast drive with huge 4TB capacity

My review is for the 4TB "Fast" RAID 0 version of this drive. This Seagate drive is a phenomenal backup drive. It really is FAST! It's so fast because internally it's composed of two hard drives running in parallel in a RAID 0 configuration to give twice the throughput. It comes formatted in NTFS. Mac users who want to keep using it with NTFS will need to go to Seagate's website to download an NTFS-for-Mac program by Paragon to be able to write to this drive. It's a free program on the Seagate site. Alternatively, Mac users could format the drive to Mac's native "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" file format (also known as HFS+ format). If you want to share this HFS+ formatted drive with a PC, you can install an HFS-for-Win program on your PC to enable read/write capability on Mac drives. This HFS-for-Win program is also available for free on the Seagate support site. There are definite advantages of NTFS over HFS+. 4TB Sleek, Fast, & Easy

I purchased the 4TB Seagate GoFlex Desk external drive with the intent of consolidating all my media files onto a single central drive. Straight out of the box, impressions were good. The newer generation drive offers a sleeker high gloss alternative to the previous Seagate Desk models. The drive comes equipped with a USB 3.0 base dock, which features five white LEDs on the front to illustrate power as well as indicate the capacity used on the drive in 25% increments. In addition, it also comes with the AC power adapter and a 4 foot USB 3.0 cord, which is significantly more convenient than the 1 1/2 foot cords that were supplied with my 1TB Seagate GoFlex Ultra Portable Drives.Right out of the box I plugged in to my Windows 7 laptop, had the drivers automatically installed, and was off and running in about 30 seconds. Simple enough. Great Drive with One Understandable Flaw

Because of some early negative reviews from Amazon users, and what I'm pretty sure is a computer rendering of the product instead of a photograph, I was initially a little reluctant about this drive. But I've had a lot of very good experiences with Seagate, so I bought it. I'm glad I did.The build quality is nice. The enclosure is actually really slick. I do prefer the look of a thin, USB powered, 2.5" external, but in the world of 3.5" drives this is total design win.It performs about as expected, if not better. I'm currently still using USB 2.0, but the initial burst on this thing is crazy high, and it (very) gradually slows down to my typical transfer rate. This is more true with a single large file than many small files. But its overall performance has me really excited about installing a USB 3.0 card in my system. The Bad? Well, I bought this to be a media drive, and it "sleeps" after a relatively short period of inactivity. I want my... 4/5 Beard/// - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Currently the best price for a drive this powerful--anywhere.

I had purchased a WD Elements 1.5TB external hard drive less than a year ago, but my iMac's start-up disc kept crying out for more space. So I decided to go to an additional drive, except with a capacity of 2TB's or more. I would have been happy to go with another WD Elements drive--were it not for prices double or triple what I paid 10-11 months ago. Then I noticed buzz on the internet about Amazon's low price for the Seagate Expansion Drive 3TB. While reading Amazon reviews, however, I couldn't help but be alarmed by the complaints of numerous recent owners of the "Expansion" model. As a result, I was about to settle on a lower-capacity WD drive when I came upon this Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 3TB drive, which Amazon was showing for a mere "dime" more than the Seagate Expansion drive. After reading positive reviews for this particular GoFlex at MacWorld and Cnet, I was sold. Perhaps the Expansion model has slightly smaller dimensions--but certainly too small to matter.
