The Ramblers

Creator: Aidan Donnelley Rowley | Fiction - 2016-02-09

Chock full of the crackling wit, irreverent humor, and raw honesty that readers have come to expect from Aidan Donnelley Rowley, this is a tale of beautiful people in glamorous places when life is anything but beautiful and glamorous.

Publisher: HarperCollins

About this book
For fans of J. Courtney Sullivan, Meg Wolitzer, Claire Messud, and Emma Straub, a gorgeous and absorbing novel of a trio of confused souls struggling to find themselves and the way forward in their lives, set against the spectacular backdrop of contemporary New York City.Set in the most magical parts of Manhattan—the Upper West Side, Central Park, Greenwich Village—The Ramblers explores the lives of three lost souls, bound together by friendship and family. During the course of one fateful Thanksgiving week, a time when emotions run high and being with family can be a mixed blessing, Rowley’s sharply defined characters explore the moments when decisions are deliberately made, choices accepted, and pasts reconciled.Clio Marsh, whose bird-watching walks through Central Park are mentioned in New York Magazine, is taking her first tentative steps towards a relationship while also looking back to the secrets of her broken childhood. Her best friend, Smith Anderson, the seemingly-perfect daughter of one of New York’s wealthiest families, organizes the lives of others as her own has fallen apart. And Tate Pennington has returned to the city, heartbroken but determined to move ahead with his artistic dreams.Rambling through the emotional chaos of their lives, this trio learns to let go of the past, to make room for the future and the uncertainty and promise that it holds. The Ramblers is a love letter to New York City—an accomplished, sumptuous novel about fate, loss, hope, birds, friendship, love, the wonders of the natural world and the mysteries of the human spirit.

Hard Drive, A Family's Fight Against Three Countries

Creator: Mary Todd | True Crime - 2014-08-01

This story, which is told from the unique perspective of Shane’s mother, Mary, recounts the family’s painful, arduous, and unwavering endeavor to reveal the truth about what happened to Shane Todd in Singapore.

Publisher: Morgan James Publishing

About this book
On June 24, 2012, Dr. Shane Truman Todd, a young American engineer, was found hanging in his Singapore apartment, just a week before his scheduled return to the United States. Although Shane had repeatedly expressed apprehension about his work with a Chinese company and fear his life was being threatened, authorities immediately ruled his death a suicide. His family initially didn’t know what to believe. However, upon arriving in Singapore, they realized the evidence suggested not suicide, but murder. Shane’s family later discovered that what they thought was a computer speaker was actually an external hard drive with thousands of files from Shane’s computer. The information in those files transformed this story from a tragic suicide to an international saga of mystery, deceit, and cover-up, involving three countries. “Hard Drive: A Families Fight against Three Countries” is the captivating story of Shane’s mysterious death and his family’s grueling battle to reveal the truth against powerful forces that have sought to conceal, destroy, or discredit evidence indicating homicide. This story, which is told from the unique perspective of Shane’s mother, Mary, recounts the family’s painful, arduous, and unwavering endeavor to reveal the truth about what happened to Shane Todd in Singapore.

    So Far...It Works!

Works just fine, for the short time I've owned it. Only hope it keeps doing so. I've owned external hard drives manufactured by Toshiba, Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, and Iomega. I guess I've been lucky -- all performed to my expectations. The only one that showed signs of failure was the Toshiba, and that was after using it for 3 or 4 years. The Maxtor never failed, but it was an early USB 1.1. model requiring proprietary software -- and was rendered obsolete by the universal standards eventually adopted for such devices. The current external drive longest in service is my Seagate 500gb FreeAgent (about 4 years). My only quibble (so far) with the Touro is the length of the cable which came with it. It is very very short.I will update this review in a year -- or sooner should the Touro fail. I wish others would do this if the products they review prove to have a shorter than useful life...or which endure longer than one might expect.UPDATE... 4/5 Buzz Stephens (Vancouver, WA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Light, Portable, Lots of capacity.

These drives are pretty good. I have both the 1TB and the 500GB versions. It uses a single USB plug with an odd looking connector on the drive side. The drive is USB 3.0 but can be used in a USB 2.0 connection. Its really fast when connected to USB 3.0. Pretty mundane when connected to USB 2.0. You can't plug it into an external USB hub and expect it to work correctly. I think it can't draw enough power (there is no separate power supply or plug) so you get unexpected results. Best to plug it directly to your computer mounted USB ports.Do not drop the drive while it is spinning up (shortly after you plug it in) -- I did that to one of my 500GB drives and I could no longer access the data. I changed out the cable, ran all kinds of utilities and tried to recover the drive to no avail, could not even reformat it. Since it was in the warranty period, I contacted Hitachi (HGST) and got an RMA, sent it back to them and they sent a replacement out about 10 days later... 4/5 Kindle Customer (Las Vegas, NV, US) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) AVOID! If you own it already BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY!

1/5 TomCoffeen (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 120GB SDSSDEXT-120G-G25 (Personal Computers) Same problem as many others customers here: After 3 months of owning the drive and using it maybe 10 times in total, the USB port on the drive separated from the enclosure. I realize there can be variances in durability due to latent manufacturing issues but this is the poorest hardware quality I've experienced from a major brand. I find it nearly impossible to believe that the device was subjected to any QA testing given the number of units affected and the apparent average time to unit failure. I will certainly never buy another SanDisk product after this experience. If you currently own this drive and it hasn't yet failed, back up your data asap., August 23, 2016

Don't pass on this Tiny SSD. It's AMAZING

5/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 240GB SDSSDEXT-240G-G25 (Personal Computers) LOVE LOVE LOVE this thing. Crazy how small it is compared to other SSD's on the market, and its Insane how much cheaper it is. Its really so much smaller than you'd expect and as fast as current standards allow. I routinely copy 10GB+ from my computers hard drive to this thing and it take all of 20-30 seconds to complete (my laptop is USB-C 3.1).I have two of these - 1 for use with Lightroom and for storing RAW and JPG Photos, and a 2nd to act as a redundant backup of the first (cause you can never be too safe). I'm getting ready to buy a 3rd one, but of the 900 series, to use as my primary SSD for TimeMachine backup's of my MacBook since i've read its a straight USB-C to USB3.0 Micro cord thats included and its much faster for the larger amount of data thats being transferred., December 30, 2015

The only external SSD brand worth buying.

This is the ONLY brand of external SSD on Amazon that's worth buying in my opinion. The weird encryption software that you must install before you can use the Samsung drives rules them out, despite their other nice attributes. The MyDigitalSSD drive I ordered let me down badly: it repeatedly overheated and unmounted itself before I could finish transferring my Photos and iMovie libraries onto it.Nice job, SanDisk. This unit is small, but clearly designed to take a little punishment. The rubber edge bumper and rubber plug for the micro-USB3 port are a nice touch. I won't worry about messing this drive up by tossing it into my backpack with my keys and such.Where the MyDigitalSSD fell down, the SanDisk shines. No heat problems, no weird un-mounting issues, and rock solid reliable so far. The diamond shaped design with the USB plug at the corner is a little weird, but it's growing on me.There's no substitute for reliability. Quick. Compact. No complaints

I have to say, this drive has surpassed my expectations. It is well made, compact and doesnt come with any bloatware preinstalled on it trying to get me to use their backup solution or anything else. The drive is just that. A drive. A quick drive with a lot of space.First and foremost I was shocked at how small it was. It is the first portable hard drive I've owned, and I was pleased with the fact that it can fit in the small zip top pocket on my computer backpack that was designed to hold a mouse, and still have room for that mouse. On top of that, if I really needed to, I could stick it in my pocket. It really is that slim. The build quality is top notch, the case doesnt creak or rattle, its smooth to the touch without being so slick that you'd drop it, and it has nice rubber feet to prevent rattling during drive access when it is sitting on your desk. The drive itself is very quick, I managed to transfer a 2 gigabyte ISO file to it... 5/5 Beradon (WI, United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent drive for use with Time Machine (OS X)

I use this 500 GB drive as a Time Machine with my 2012 Macbook Pro (the 15" with Retina display, simply for reference). I have been very happy with every aspect of its functioning: it is quiet, it runs cool, and the transfer speeds are quite fast (I rarely notice that the 'Time Machine clock' is spinning). As it comes, you need to reformat it for use with a Macintosh computer, but with Disk Utility, this is not a problem, and the drive responds well to being reformatted. I set the drive up with two partitions, one for a drag and drop compatible with Windows, and one for Time Machine. Since the unit is very light, and yet feels safe and sturdy, I've been able to carry it around on occasion with no problems. Of course, it is a portable drive, so this is to be expected! When I first set the drive up as a Time Machine, it needed to transfer approximately 42 GB of data, which took about 25 minutes. This corresponds to a relatively slow transfer rate (on the order of... 5/5 A. Berke (Longmeadow, MA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) The HDD was "Recertified in Malaysia" I am disappointed with the seller....I haven't checked whether it is working yet, that's why the two stars. Will update after customer service call.Update: After customer service call.Returning it. Never wanted a recertified piece.Kudos to the seller. Good customer service.Amazon has a problem.
