    Failed to recognize

I am deployed overseas in the field and it takes about two weeks to get anything shipped from Amazon. So you can imagine my utter disappointment to find out that this product failed in less than a year of receipt. The hard drive worked fine; I purchased it to keep all of my personal files, photos, iTunes purchases, etc.I own two computers; one desktop Intel Dual Core i7 and a HP laptop i5, both running on Windows 7.My work computer is also an HP laptop i5.One day I roll into the office, as usual, and hook up my drive to my personal laptop.I see the light on the drive on steady, but the drive is not recognized.I hook it up to my work laptop to see if it works on that and it was recognized.I later took it home to try it on my home desktop; not recognized. And yes, I've tried contacting tech support (and got a big fat phone bill) and they were of no help.Spent a week researching on Google and all the various forums, but nothing... 1/5 Jae Hyun Park - See all my reviews, February 28, 2012

Fatal Flaw Can Cost You Your Data or a Ton of Cash

Don't buy this USB hard drive. It has a fatal flaw that can cost you all your data or thousands of dollars. Here's why:If you buy a bare 2.5 inch SATA hard drive and an empty USB case for it, it is trivial to replace the case if it is damaged or if the USB connector gets damaged - just buy another case, pop your hard drive in, and viola, you're in business. You'd think you'd be able to do this with this WD drive, but that's not the case (pun intended). This drive has the USB port soldered onto the hard drive controller, so if the port is damaged (easy to do if you accidentally yank the cord), you can't pop the drive out and put it in another case. You have to send the drive to a professional repair house at cost of thousand dollars or more....I've had this happen to two of my customers and I simply will not buy Western Digital USB drives anymore. As a matter of fact, I insist on "building my own" by purchasing empty cases and bare... 1/5 Sourcehound (Chicago) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A handy companion for any computer technician!

My primary line of work is as a self-employed PC tech and this little 500 gig drive has been the most reliable piece of equipment I've owned in the last 5 years. Great for constantly backing up customer hard drives before modifying them, backing up my hard drives routinely and loading it up with all the computer tech apps I can find for a "jack of all trades" sort of portable drive. It's got enough space for it all. My only regret is that I didn't buy the 1 tb version. For the non-techies, 500 gb will be more than enough for your music, videos, docs, pics, etc. For techies, I'd recommend grabbing the 1 tb version of this drive. Very sleek and fits in your pocket quite easily. A lot of the other portable USB hard drives haven't quite gotten the concept that not everyone wants a brick-sized version to "carry around" :)Other than that, durability has been solid. Haven't had to replace the hard drive and I've managed to drop it only once, which I'm sure has contributed to its... 5/5 Travis Stein (Houston, TX (USA)) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
