Sequential Writes/Reads Faster Than 2015 Model, Excellent Drive, New Case Design Not An Improvement

This model is the latest generation of the many My Passport drives I've owned or purchased for clients. They have proven reliable and good performers. They have incrementally improved with each new generation. This model features a new case design which most notably replaced the rounded corners with sharp 90 degree ones. Otherwise it should have little effect on use.BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient):The new model is a little bit faster than last year's and includes the 4TB model added to the previous generation My Passport Ultra early in 2016. This model (I got the 4TB size) is just noticeably faster than the 2015 model on sequential reads and but especially writes using Crystal DiskMark. This My Passport has a new design that replaces rounded corners with pointy ones and adds some odd (to me) styling to the case. The new case shows fingerprints and scratches much more than the old. It's a purely aesthetic change. Other than outward appearance it's... 5/5 Stephanie Sullivan (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews, October 14, 2016

WD just released the latest version of their Passport Portable External Hard Drives in 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB.For the 3TB The old version was Model #WDBBKD0030BBK-NESN and this new version is Model # WDBYFT0030BBK-WESN.I researched if there are any differences, so here is what I came up with...Pros• High Capacity Available - Up to 4TB (The older model when released had up to 3TB capacity, up until a 6/28/16 release of a short lived 4TB model)• Testing suggests slightly faster data transfer rate• Now available in 6 colors.Same as Old Model Nothing Changed• Automatic local and cloud backup• Optional 256-bit AES hardware encryption• Comes in same 4 colors, they still offer black, blue, red and white (+ yellow and orange)• USB 3.0 connectivity• Formatted for Windows, reformatting required for Mac• Same operating temperature• USB 3.0 up to 5 Gb/s (max) / USB 2.0 compatible up to 480 Mb/s... 5/5 Harry Spalding (NY,USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: WD 3TB Black USB 3.0 My Passport Portable External Hard Drive (WDBYFT0030BBK-WESN) (Personal Computers) WD just released the latest version of their Passport Portable External Hard Drives in 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB.For the 3TB The old version was Model #WDBBKD0030BBK-NESN and this new version is Model # WDBYFT0030BBK-WESN.I researched if there are any differences, so here is what I came up with...Pros• High Capacity Available - Up to 4TB (The older model when released had up to 3TB capacity, up until a 6/28/16 release of a short lived 4TB model)• Testing suggests slightly faster data transfer rate• Now available in 6 colors.Same as Old Model Nothing Changed• Automatic local and cloud backup• Optional 256-bit AES hardware encryption• Comes in same 4 colors, they still offer black, blue, red and white (+ yellow and orange)• USB 3.0 connectivity• Formatted for Windows, reformatting required for Mac• Same operating temperature• USB 3.0 up to 5 Gb/s (max) / USB 2.0 compatible up to 480 Mb/s... Modern Split Look with Vibrant colors !!

Look: I first thought that this hard drive is little big to carry but No, I was wrong. It looks like this but in actual it has same size as WD passport. Only difference is it has square shape while WD passport has round corners.Working: This WD Hard drive is pretty good in transfer data time. Similar as WD passport. It takes pretty decent time to transfer data like videos, photos, etc. Means not slow, this is exactly what it should be.Color: This is available in many colors. I ordered Red and this red is typical Red. Little kiddish color. If you want decent one only go with Black. As this hard disk colors are very vibrant, not decent.Quality: No doubt outer layer is not as good as WD passport. But not that bad also as Some reviewers mentioned that the outer layer has cheap plastic. I don’t think so. This is a hard drive, not a toy you would play with. And thus I did not find any issue with quality.Overall this is a 5* Hard Drive. Don’t... 5/5 Shan - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Speed tests...

    ### PHYSICAL ###One terabyte that fits in your jeans' pocket. I don't want to go all "when we were young we walked 10 miles to school, etc." on you, but my first hard drive was such that I would have needed 50'000 of 'em to match the capacity, occupying a solid cube 9 feet on each side and setting me back 30 million dollars. That's mind- blowing progress indeed, and while the original advances were made by firms like Seagate and IBM, those have mostly sold off/sourced out in the meantime, leaving Western Digital as the Bleeding Edge hard drive brand. This device looks like a cigarette holder with a glossy finish. The edges are rounded, and the usb connector is the only opening in the case, so for my occasional transport I just carry the drive in my jacket as-is. It would have been super- neat to have a rubber flap over the usb and perhaps a more scratch- resistant matte finish, but there is no issue here, especially since WD offers inexpensive... 4/5 Strohmian (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews, October 21, 2010

    ULTIMATE!

I picked this up from amazon for 50$ before the great Japan Hard Drive Crisis (when the tsunami hit and the power plant melted down). I don't think I could ever fill up this much space and I take photographs DAILY. I have a 8BG card in my cam and at the end of a month or two I put them on this drive. I am nowhere near full or even 25% for that matter. The main reason I bought this one is because it does NOT need an external power supply. Meaning the USB plug that goes to the computer ALSO gives it the power it needs at the same time! It's just a big as a real passport but about two thick. There's a little white light that lets you know if stuff is being transferred. It also stays on constantly if its plugged in so that can be annoying at night because it's so bright it can light an entire room. But when you have 1TB at your fingertips you tend to sleep like a baby even if the light is on!It's not a SSD like most might think. Western Digital unreliable

WD deserve only one star! I ordered WD My Passport Essential portable external drive in April 2012 from Amazon. I chose WD's portable ext-drive because it came with its own software (WD Smartware) and WD advertise that their software can image your hard-drive for direct reboot. When I got my WD ext-drive I installed the WD Smartware on my Dell laptop to make an image of my laptop's hard drive in case my laptop's hard drive crashes I can boot from WD ext-drive. I even called WD's tech support and had them walk me through the installation for imaging my laptop's hard-drive. The WD Smartware indicated that my entire laptop hard-drive was properly copied. I updated my hard-drive twice a week. In late June 2012 my Dell laptop started having problems. I called WD's tech support and ask them for help. All of a sudden WD's tech support claimed that their software does not do imaging, only saves data files! 2 months earlier they instructed me on how to properly install the WD Smartware for... 1/5 NoName - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

WD Passport drives have always been reliable, excellent drives and I've owned several without any issues, but this new version is very disappointing for 2 key reasons:1) The included software is incredibly tricky to disable if you don't want to use it. You have to go to WD's website and download new hardware and software drivers. I am relative tech-savvy, but it took me 90 minutes to finally get the drive ready to drag and drop files over to it. I almost gave up..I should have.2) New mini USB cable is VERY unstable. The slightest touch, and I mean just barely touching the cable while the drive is connected to your USB port, will disconnect the drive from your computer. The problem lies with the mini USB connection where it connects to the drive itself.I could have lived with reason 1, as I overcame it and my frustrations would have subsided, but reason 2 makes the drive simply unusable. I am returning it to Amazon.WD management - you are... 1/5 JREV (Ambler, PA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) unacceptable

i bought three of this new model and was planning to put a bunch of family pictures on them and give them to my parents for christmas.unfortunately i was a victim of false advertising : this is not a plug-and-play drive.WD, what are you thinking ? When I plug in my hard drive i certainly don't want a CD volume automatically appearing under My Computer in addition to the actual hard drive volume.Because of this "Virtual CD" nonsense, Windows launches the "New Hardware Assistant" each time I plug in my drive! Here is what WD has to say about "The Virtual CD" :"" A small portion of drive space on your new My Passport or My Book hard drive has been used to create a Virtual CD (VCD). The VCD contains the WD SmartWare installation software, the encryption and password protection application, User Manuals, and other resource files. The VCD looks like an actual CD volume and appears on the screen each time you connect your WD drive to the... 1/5 Stephan Baishanski (Paris, France) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2009

Hate it, wish I hadn't assumed latest model would be better than previous

I did research for a while on hard drives, and the previous model received generally positive reviews, so I finally decided to go for it and order one. Then I noticed the 'a newer model of this item is available' link, and clicked on it. Assumption; the newer model would just be an updated model of the previous. Now, I do not lay claim to a really high level of technical understanding of computers and processes, but I know enough to know that when your laptop crashes the first 3 times you try to connect your new external hard drive, there's a problem. At first I assumed that it was maybe a clash between the hard drive and my virus software, because it can be a little temperamental the first time it sees a new program, and when it did eventually install I began a back up. The back up just stopped after about half an hour; the cord fell out of the back of the drive. I plugged it back in, and the light on the drive came back on, but the back up wouldn't resume. I've tried several times... 1/5 A. Andrew (NY, USA) - See all my reviews, October 4, 2009
