THIS is why there are mixed reviews

I have purchased this item years before, and I am very disappointed with the product that I just received. The good ratings and five stars are from the people that received the original, but lately, people are giving low reviews because the new product is lacking. It may look similar, but upon closer inspection, this is definitely not the item pictured (the case that I bought years back)I uploaded pictures of my original to prove how different it is.1. The new version lacks the WD logo on the zipper2. The new version has an exposed zipper instead of the original finished look of a covered zipper3. The new version is slightly smaller. The original fits perfectly, even with the cord. but I had to TRY to close the zipper with the new one. (like when you pack too many things in a suitcase) This was the biggest indication to me that something was not right. Hence why I pulled out the original to closely compare.4. Doesn't fit the My Passport Wireless drive

3/5 Midas Welby - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Passport Carrying Case - Black (Personal Computers) When I bought the WD My Passport drive, this case was promoted as being compatible via the "Frequently bought together" routine. It is TOO SMALL. (See the photo. Missed it by about 1/2"-3/4". WD includes a list of compatible drives for this case as part of the packaging. Amazon needs to do a better job matching products. On the positive side, if and when I get a case that fits, I expect to be very pleased., March 15, 2015

This review is from: WD My Passport Carrying Case - Black (Personal Computers) This is my bad, but I didn't realize this was a soft case, which isn't what I wanted. Nothing wrong with it, per se, just not what I wanted. It's also very small. I can barely fit the drive (WD passport 1TB) along with the USB cable. For just a little more money, I can get a hard case, which is what I prefer. The picture is a comparison of the DL 64s (hot pink), the AmazonBasic for WD My Passport (black hard case w/blue drive), the WD My Passport carrying case (soft, black case), and an old CaseLogic PHCD case (hard case with silver drive). I posted reviews of the AmazonBasic and the DL64 with more pictures., June 23, 2016

Ideal, but for a fatal design flaw

This product was a single design decision away from getting five stars. It is inexpensive and works well. The design decision that breaks it is what happens if it stops working well. The drive has an unreliable USB connection on the back. I think it's a USB 3.0 micro type B jack, which is standard, but basically all mini and micro USB connectors are under-engineered and prone to failure. So if you don't treat it like a pint of nitroglycerine, your drive might just stop working. That seems to be a common problem. This, however, is not the fatal design flaw, because if that were the entire story, you could just take it apart, pull out the drive, use another adapter to plug it into your computer and be back in business. But you can't do that. It appears that WD drives that come with their Smartware are hardware encrypted whether you use a password or not.WD argues that this prevents a thief, even if you don't use a password, from removing the drive from the... 2/5 Duane A. WORKS GREAT FOR XBOX ONE!!!

This review is from: Western Digital 3 TB USB 3.0 My Book Desktop External Hard Drive (WDBFJK0030HBK-NESN) (Personal Computers) I bought this for my xbox ONE since the internal HDD is only 500gb. I transferred all my games over to this HDD and they play and load from the external HDD just as fast if not a bit faster. Plus it leaves open my internal HDD for applications such as, achievements, GameDVR, twitch, ect...so they load much faster while playing a game at the same time!!! No installation for xbox ONE just plug in seconds later the xbox ONE will pick it up and ask you to format it. Format it and name your new HDD and enjoy!!, June 18, 2015

BEWARE: Unstable USB plug! Yes, it IS that sensitive to movement.

I can't add much to the review made by INGE STUBDAL except to resoundingly second the hundreds of agreements made by other buyers to that review AND to say that unlike INGE, something similar has happened before with 3+ other WD products--all WD Elements. Though I was careful with them, not plugging/unplugging, they sat on a desk, etc., I blamed it being that particular drive & maybe I wasn't as careful as I thought--after reading an article on WD site while troubleshooting ("How to eliminate potential problems on USB Powered Drives")Despite my reservations, at the time My Book (&WD) had SO many positive reviews, I gave in & bought one when it was on sale. With extra babying & NEVER unplugging cords from the drive, it LASTED 3 YRS. Now it's VERY temperamental as if there's a short at the drive connection, just from getting moved around on the desk for dusting and that type thing.Thankfully, I learned from past mistakes & also had been backing up data to... 1/5 LKD (South) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) How to set up your WD My Book Essential 3TB 3.0 USB drive

I have six of these drives. I have had no serious problems to date, the oldest I've owned for about four months now. I will return to edit this review should a drive fail in the future.UPDATE: I wrote the above in October 2011. Writing now in October 2012, I now have eight of these drives. No problems to date.SECOND UPDATE: Writing now in November 2013. I have nine of these drives at this point. No problems to date.THIRD UPDATE: Writing now in October 2014. Same nine drives. Still no problems to report. Here is my recommendation for how to set up the drive, out of the box. I've done this a bunch of times now, so I'm getting routine at it, and thought I'd write it out for others. Some caveats, for what it might be worth:--I am running Windows 7 64-bit.--I use both 3.0 and 2.0 connectivity, depending on the computer I hook these up to.--I have no use for the included backup software, so I can't speak to that. If... 4/5 Scott Saccenti (Colora, MD USA) - See all my reviews, October 12, 2011

Connection Shortage, Not a Good Deal

At the time I purchased this 5 yrs ago I thought I got a good deal. It was a good price and I HAVE gotten service out of it for 5 years. The reason I only gave it 2 stars though is because it now has several issues that started at least a couple years ago. It works fine with Vista, Windows 8/8.1 but did something funky when I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 and got strange shortcuts to nonexistent drives like "CD Unlocker" which I've just ignored. Now it's doing something funny again for no reason seemingly and has changed from my "H" drive to my "I" drive. Maybe that's just something I don't understand, no big deal. All this is only present when it's plugged in and running and I've always got access to the drive.Major issue now is it stopped automatically powering back on when I reboot the computer while it's plugged in (which is 24/7). I used to just have to unplug the power cord and plug it back in, or do the same via USB connection and all was... 2/5 David - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Insufficient Power

This is a very nice looking, compact drive with a large storage capacity. I now look at it as a mega USB drive. However, my original reason for wanting one was as a single-PC backup storage for critical files and it just doesn't have the stability for that. The device features a single mini-USB to USB connection (cable included) to provide data transfer and power to the drive. This unfortunately means that the drive can come into scenarios where there isn't enough power coming to it that it can be detected by your PC. This is especially the case if you try to plug it into a USB hub.Plugging mine directly into the PC fixed the problem for me but required me to put my device in an inconvenient location.I like the form factor on this guy and I think the synchronization software would be handy for other people, but I should have purchased a... 2/5 Matt Eland (Columbus, OH USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 4/5 DMR008 (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Western Digital My Passport Essential 160GB USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive (Black) (Electronics) I'm very pleased with this purchase. The drive is quite portable, and extremely easy to use. I've had no problems with it at all, and like the file transfer speeds. For some reason, the Western Digital software that comes installed in this drive won't install on my pc. So I really have no idea whether there are some good features I'm missing out on. For this reason, I gave the product 4 stars out of 5. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 4, 2008
