    Bundled Software Unremoveable!

Ok so here's the deal. WD used to sell ordinary hard drives. Good prices. Decent reliability. Just hard drives like everyone else. I own two of the earlier generation 500GB drives and I love them. That was then. Now they think they're "adding value" by including software on the drive for backup and whatnot.Fine.On the 1TB drive, my Mac says over 660 MB is being used for this. You can not erase this data. It appears as a "virtual" CD on the Mac Desktop. The hardware inside the drive protects this virtual CD from being altered in any way.You can run Disk Utility all you want. It won't remove it.WD says it's being "green" by including this on the HD and not a CD.Fine. Admirable. After a lot of customer uproar, they released a utility to HIDE the partition. But you don't get your space back. This partition by the way can "update itself" over the internet.Scared yet?Right now, if you want... 3/5 nicdnyc (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A good external drive with a few annoyances

The series of next-generation My Passport (including My Passport SE high capacity versions) drives from WD that have just come out seem to getting a bad rap. The bone of contention is based on two aspects. One is the new micro-USB connector and the second is the WD SmartWare backup & control software that mounts a second drive when you plug these things into your computer.I wavered endlessly after looking at all the bad reviews despite being interested in getting these. In the end, I decided to purchase both a 500 GB and 750 GB model to see for myself. If the product would be unusable, I could simply return it back.Firstly, the SmartWare. It automatically installs a second drive and it apparently cannot be removed or disabled. However, the software does not take up a lot of space. The capacity on the My Passport SE is 697 GB (750 GB formatted, NTFS), and the SmartWare takes up 569 MB if you right-click your mouse and check the drive's properties. That is less... 4/5 M. Sheet!!!

If I could give the d*mned thing negative stars, I would.I purchased this to back up an aging computer whose hard drive was just about maxed out. I had planned on storing my big files (photos, music) on it until I'd purchased a new computer. Then, I'd transfer everything from the Passport to the new computer and life would be wonderful.Good thing I tried to transfer files to a laptop before I did anything irreparable. The d*mned thing won't allow me to download to a different computer!!! I can return files to where they originally lived, but that doesn't do me an ounce of good with a hard drive that's burst its seams.I downloaded updated software. I fiddled. Then, in a last ditch attempt, I called WD support. They put me thru the same paces I'd already done on my own. Still no communication with "alien" computers.AFTER NINETY MINUTES ON THE PHONE WITH WD TECH SUPPORT THE REP FINALLY ADVISED ME TO GIVE UP AND INSTEAD DOWNLOAD DATA... 1/5 Anon (Sitting In Front Of My Computer) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) What a nice drive!!

Okay, despite of all the negative reviews I have seen for this portable drive, I would say there is a doubtabout them. This is the Second drive "My Passport Essential 500GB" I get, the first was Black midnight color, the second wasthe Amazon Exclusive Robot Design. Both comes already NTFS formatted with 465GB ready to use. you could format itto other File Systems if you like to make it work for MacOS X or Linux. The Black one had the Virtual CD that keeps nagging me. And popping up every time you hook up the usb with yourcomputer which can disabled by updating the firmware from Western Digital website. but you can not delete it,nevertheless it's not taking any space from the drive itself. The Robot Design one, on the contrary, doesn't have the Virtual CD installed, and the first time you plug it inyou could see Western Digital SmartWare backup solution on the drive itself, which you can easily delete.One... 5/5 Rebel_X - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great External Hard Drive.!

5/5 Allan - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) I bought the Limited Edition Robot Design before to read any review here. After I bought it, I felt very frustrated because of the virtual cd and the firmware update and all that bad reviews....I received it and plugged it, and it was like a miracle! it did not request to install anything, It does not come with any virtual cd or anything like that. It works perfectly.!The unit has a separate folder where you can find the WD SmartWare software, and you install it just if you want to use it as auto backup drive, but what I needed was extra storage only, and it works perfectly.!! The same way any other external hard drive.I write this review just those who have doubts about buying this unit because of the other reviews.. I want to let you know that if you buy the Limited Edition Robot Design, you will not have to deal with any firmware update nor anything like that.I hightly recommend this product. 7 years and the only issue is...

5/5 ZImgirl - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: WD My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) I believe there is now a small issue with my cable. But I have had this hard drive for 7 years now and I have to say... I love it. I have had computer issues in the past and this hard drive has saved my butt. Unfortunately, I have a lot of photos, music and memories on there that I can't get to because of a cable issue. So if anyone knows exactly what cable it needs and can help me out that would be nice. The newer WD hard drives have a different shape output and they are the only ones I have seen so far.
