    Lousy Packaging

4/5 Midnite (Paris Island, SC) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Western Digital 1TB SATA II 3.5 Inch High Speed Internal Hard drive (Personal Computers) This drive works as advertised. Plug and play. It seems fast and quiet. This is a bare disk. No cables, no mounting screws, etc. but at this price who can complain. Now for the bad news. I'm surprised the drive worked at all. The drive came in a static free bag and nothing else for protection. It was thrown into a box with a HEAVY drill set and a drive holder. The only packing was one air pillow strip which rode on top of the contents. The drive, drill set, and drive holder were free to bounce around for the trip. Someone at Amazon needs lessons in packaging computer equipment.... Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 14, 2008

    Issues upon arrival

1/5 Emmanuel (Roseau, Dominica) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Western Digital 1TB SATA II 3.5 Inch High Speed Internal Hard drive (Personal Computers) Can't say anything much as I'm awaiting a replacement. Package came in excellent condition but once I connected, the PC couldn't recognise the drive. I thought maybe the Mobo manufactured lied about SATA II support, so I plugged it into my external drive dock, nothing; tried the second external drive case that I had, same results as before. Filed a RMA one time and had to send back for a replacement. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 25, 2009

Excellent external hard drive - fast, quiet and compact

My CAXM 1TB External Hard Drive contains Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 Hard Disk. It's a very good disk for an external hard drive. Check out tomshardware review of Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B.Here are some disk specs from the review: "... HDT721010SLA360, which can be broken down like so: Hitachi Deskstar T-series (HDT), 7,200 RPM (72), maximum family capacity 1 TB (the first 10), actual capacity (the second 10), the generation (S) and Z-height (L stands for 26.1 mm), the interface (3 = SATA/300) and the cache capacity (6 = 16 MB)."So, it is a 7200 RPM disk with 16 MB cache and quite low idle power consumption - 5.4W, which should make it perfect for eSATA capable DVRs.It works well with my DirecTV HR22-100 DVR.The black CAXM measures 7 5/8" x 4 3/8" x 1 1/4" or 193mm/112mm/32mm, it has a power switch (very convenient for a backup disk which is not going to be always on), eSATA and USB 2.0 interfaces, the enclosure is aluminum and it has no... 5/5 Jake (SF Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Dang 'ol nice drive!

The Cavalry CAXM External Hard Drive is probably the best ever made, with its eSATA interface and 7200 RPM Hitachi drive inside. It runs cool (a lot cooler than my internal Hitachi drive) and is completely quiet. Connected to eSATA port on my computer, it's as fast as the internal drive, at 300MB/s. I use it to incrementally back up my main drive (every 6 hours, using Cobian), as well as store 1800 hours of video and other stuff. I also put a boot-loader (GRUB) in it along with several bootable repair ISOs, so can boot to it and restore the main computer if needed. The folks at Cavalry did this one right when they paired a good interface and aluminum enclosure with the 1TB Hitachi drive. I'm very happy with it, and it's well-worth $100 to be able to have a big, fast back-up drive. You can't compare that with a dinky USB2 laptop-type drive!Being a full-size drive, it does have an external power adapter. One minor negative I've noticed that since installing it, it... 5/5 Harold Melton (Texas) - See all my reviews, June 9, 2012

Do not use CAXM unit on OSX

The unit is advertised as compatible on Windows and OSX (Apple) systems. To use it on OSX, the drive must be reformatted to Apple disk drive file format. Instructions are provided by the manufacturer. The conversion completed without incident. I connected the disk drive to the OSX computer via a V2.0 USB port. The problem occurs when OSX puts the disk drive in sleep mode and later re-awakens it. The disk drive can resume into a indeterminate state. OSX will report a error -53 (Drive is read only) if there is an attempt to write a file, create a folder, or any other write operation to the drive. OSX will also report an error -50 (Drive in use) if you try to dismount the drive. Yet, "no" application is using the disk drive. You must use Apple's Finder application to "force" dismount option to dismount the disk drive. Although a "force" dismount work without incident 99% of the time, it is dangerous because 1% of the time, the drive data can be left in a inconsistent or corrupted state... 2/5 Amazon Customer (Florida) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Defective design when used on a Mac

THE GOOD:Solid case. It includes a particularly quiet, green (i.e. energy-efficient) hard drive and power supply in a high quality case, firewire 800 and USB cables, and a nice blue LED light, and on/off switch. 2 firewire 800 ports (for daisy-chaining). Note, it does come with a 800-800 cable NOT a 800-400 cable, contrary to the picture on the manufacturer's website, but this is arguably a good thing.THE BAD:1) This product was oversold. 2)It keeps making my Mac hang.1[...]The spec page</a> claims "Sustained data transfer rates up to 100MB/sec".I didn't get very close to that. EVER. I got an otherwise very respectable 69 MB/sec. But that spec led me to believe they were shipping it with one of the faster 1TB HDs, rather than the slowest one available.I bought the drive specifically to use with my MacBook Pro at firewire800 speed, namely the "Sustained data transfer rates up to 100MB/sec"advertised.With a... 1/5 Matthew Elvey (SF, CA, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great for PC, not for Mac

4/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cavalry Storage CACE Series 1 TB USB / Firewire 800 Mac-Ready External Hard Drive CACE3701T0 (Personal Computers) I've worked with 3 of these drives. Of the drives formatted for Mac one stopped working after a year, and the other one had to be formatted as FAT32 on a PC to work with a Mac, but works perfectly now. The one being used on a PC has been ticking for 18 months now without any trouble what-so-ever. Personally, I like the drive for a Windows box, but for a Mac I'd recommend G-Drive or CalDigit products, LaCie if you aren't worried about data throughput.
