    Waste of time

I bought this plus 5 Seagate 3TB drives as an intermediary stage between decommissioning my WHS (16x1.5TB drives) and whatever I move on to next.Long story short, there are things about that are annoying and with my specific unit, broken.I think Drobo spends to much money on marketing and cosmetics than they do on the actual units themselves.Annoying:1. It takes a really long time for the client to find the device, even when both are on the same switch and even if you specify the static IP.2. It takes a really long time to make any sort of change on the device, even as simple as assigning access or bringing up a share.3. There there needs to be a client at all. Why isn't it a web interface like lots of other appliance-type devices?4. The drive slots don't allow for smooth insertion or removal. Carefully pushing it straight in results in it getting hung up on something in there. All of the slots are like this.5. The... 1/5 John_nj - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Drobo FS worked well for a few years, then drastically failed me.

Here's a letter I wrote to the President of Drobo after experiencing a critical problem that should have been caught by the Drobo FS diagnostic system. Proceed with caution for not just the FS but also the N as they are based on the same operating system.Dear Mr. Buiocchi,I'm a long time customer of yours. I've referenced your products to many of my friends as reliable. That is, until now.Below is a tech report ticket from your company for my failed DroboFS ____________I had a working Drobo with all 5 bays in use. All green lights. No reported problems. I went to upgrade the capacity of my Drobo by replacing a working 2TB drive with a new 4TB drive. I've only installed and use Drobo recommended WD drives. I swapped drives per your product instructions 6 days ago. My Drobo has not recovered and is down. I rely upon it for my consulting business.I am writing to you for I feel strongly that if I was running this company I would... 2/5 A. Antonuccio (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews, April 5, 2014

Simple turnkey solution, missing a few features

I've had my Drobo FS for a little over a week now, and while the software has a couple of oversights, I'm glad I spent the extra money to get a Drobo.PROS:- It's extremely simple to use. Buy a few hard drives, don't worry too much about which ones, and slide them in the front. Connect it to your network. Enjoy.- Flexible and simple storage: Reading the lights and adding/removing drives is so easy, I would trust my grandmother to do it.- Switching between single-drive redundancy (protects against one drive failure, like RAID 5) and dual-drive redundancy (protects against two simultaneous drive failures, like RAID 6) takes a single checkbox, and does NOT require erasing/reformatting the drive. I decided to start out with dual drive redundancy, make sure the hard drives don't die early, and disable it in a few months.- It's usually quiet (see below).CONS:- When I added an older WD hard drive into the 5th slot, the fan started running... 4/5 J.
