About this book
Atmospheric Data Analysis is intended to fill a void in the atmospheric science literature and curricula. The book is self contained, and includes topics important in several other fields outside atmospheric observation, including atmospheric dynamics and statistics. It outlines the physical and mathematical basis of all aspects of atmospheric analysis. The emphasis is on the theoretical foundation of the subject and most of the development is analytic, but many practical considerations and examples are introduced. There are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter to aid the student in comprehending the material.

Spline Models for Observational Data

Creator: Grace Wahba | Mathematical statistics - 1990

This book serves well as an introduction into the more theoretical aspects of the use of spline models.

Publisher: SIAM

About this book
This book serves well as an introduction into the more theoretical aspects of the use of spline models. It develops a theory and practice for the estimation of functions from noisy data on functionals. The simplest example is the estimation of a smooth curve, given noisy observations on a finite number of its values. The estimate is a polynomial smoothing spline. By placing this smoothing problem in the setting of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, a theory is developed which includes univariate smoothing splines, thin plate splines in d dimensions, splines on the sphere, additive splines, and interaction splines in a single framework. A straightforward generalization allows the theory to encompass the very important area of (Tikhonov) regularization methods for ill-posed inverse problems. Convergence properties, data based smoothing parameter selection, confidence intervals, and numerical methods are established which are appropriate to a wide variety of problems which fall within this framework. Methods for including side conditions and other prior information in solving ill-posed inverse problems are included. Data which involves samples of random variables with Gaussian, Poisson, binomial, and other distributions are treated in a unified optimization context. Experimental design questions, i.e., which functionals should be observed, are studied in a general context. Extensions to distributed parameter system identification problems are made by considering implicitly defined functionals.

Nice quiet drive easy to use

---update at end---I purchased this drive a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with it. The only junk it was the warranty registration program. Run it then delete it. Disk comes pre-formated for NTFS. I went ahead and did a quick format to get rid of the existing folders on it. The drive goes into standby mode after 5 minutes bye default. This is quickly remedied and set to your liking with free Seagate Manager program available on Seagates website. UPDATES IN THE LAST PARAI have clarified a few things that other reviews had issues with and gave it a low rating. For Starters: Since I use Both Mac & PC, I can 1000% say that it works on both these operating systems. Some customers had issues with the drive going into sleep mode after 10 mins or so. Well, the copying process does not stop, just because the drive has gone into SLEEP mode. You can take this SLEEP feature off by:Process 1: Downloading a Free Seagate Manager program available on the Seagate website.(I did not do this, I used process 2, described next)ORProcess 2: Formatting the drive and remove the pre-installed Seagate software. Then the drive will NOT go to SLEEP Mode. How to Format a Drive in Windows:Plug the Drive --> Go to My Computer --> Right click on the Seagate icon--> Click "Format"How to Format a Drive in Mac 10.4 or earlier:Open Macintosh... 5/5 DK (VA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Single USB not enough

I bought this drive for three reasons:1. Large capacity in a small form factor,2. The ability to power/access it from a single USB port,3. It was on sale at Amazon for under $70.I started using it on my laptop when it arrived yesterday and was impressed: small, and it worked well with the short standard mini-USB cable. Then last night I plugged it in to my desktop and went to transfer over my 400 GB movie directory. It kept failing after about 10 seconds, at which time Windows 7 would report that I had just attached it. My first thought was it was due to the "sleep" utility, so I downloaded and installed the Free Agent tool from Seagate and set the timeout to Never. Didn't make any difference. I then used the test tool in the utility software and the it reported a drive failure at about 8%, and said I should contact Seagate for an RMA. All my other small external drives (except for an ancient 30 GB) need a splitter USB cable: one end connects to the drive... 3/5 Jeffrey Peterman (MD USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Seagate 1TB hold up!

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the... 5/5 Vidsavage - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Spontaneous Disconnect/Reconnect Problems

The drive performs well; I ran the HD Tune tests and was impressed with the drive performance, using the eSATA cable attachment with my Sony laptop. And, 1.5 TB in a small, portable, self-powered configuration is a really cool thing.Unfortunately, the drive spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects on its own. Most of the time, this is not that big of a deal, but for some applications (like, say, Windows 7 backup :), the disconnect causes the application to stop whatever it's doing.I use this drive for daily file backups, keeping a portable system image for recovery and I keep some large movies on it, as well. The Seagate support forums are absolutely 'lit up' with this issue and Seagate's universal response is to reformat and try again (i.e. "...you're using it wrong...").My belief is this: the Seagate firmware that will engage a sleep mode on its own; then, when an I/O request comes in, the time required to spin-up causes an I/O... 2/5 Kenneth F. It will fail you when you need it the most, Don't waste your money.

Like most people here, I bought this to backup my files in case my computer had a problem that would otherwise make me lose my files. Two years after I bought this device, the inevitable happened. My computer refused to start up. I thought I was fortunate because I had my files all backed up.However, NO. This drive did not serve the purpose I bought it for. It refused to let me transfer the files from it to my new computer. It had something to do with the version of the software (Seagate GoFlex Backup) that associates with the drive and which allows you to restore your files.Apparently, there is a "Pro" version of this software that also lets you to restore your files in what I thought would be a more intuitive way. I thought that might help so I got the 30-day free trial version of that (seriously? After spending $80 on the drive, Seagate wants to charge you even more just to let you get to your files? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.). If that wasn't enough,... 1/5 Anon Y. Mous - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
