    Well Constructed, Confusing Cable Configuration

External drives are a dime a dozen these days, so manufacturers are frequently relying upon the 'value adds' such as innovative casing and software to make their products stand out. This Iomega drive is an excellent and affordable choice that is well constructed for on-the-go computing. The brushed aluminum case is attractive but also strong enough to prevent getting crushed or cracked in a bag. Speeds are reasonable although USB 2.0 is beginning to feel slightly limited now that that 3.0 interfaces and devices are making their way to market.I do have two minor gripes: The first is there is no love for Mac users included on the drive. It's formatted for NTFS and there's no Mac software to install. It's easy enough to get working by loading disk utility and formatting it for the Mac, but it will look a little bare until you do go through the Mac formatting process. The second is the confusing cable configuration. The drive comes with a dual USB... 4/5 Lon J. Seidman (CT) - See all my reviews, February 21, 2010

Works Great, Not as Small as Expected

4/5 Alex Kah (SoBro, Louisville, KY United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Iomega Prestige 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 34169 (Personal Computers) This hard drive works great. I have plugged the drive via USB into Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Ultimate without issue. On each computer the drivers are installed automatically and work without issue. The only reason I rated this hard drive at 4/5 stars is because I thought it was smaller than it is. The impression is provided that this is a really small USB drive however there are smaller drives available in the same price range. Don't get me wrong the drive will fit in your pocket without issue and I am very satisfied with how it has worked to date. Fantastic Piece of equipment

5/5 PhotoGuy (Utah, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Iomega Prestige 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 34169 (Personal Computers) Works perfectly, NO CABLE PROBLEMS that others describe, could be faster (it may be my computer that's slow), I can carry it anywhere in confidence.side note: ALWAYS keep another copy of your work somewhere else, whether its on this drive, your computer, or another drive. There is no such thing as a 100% fail-safe hard drive, they will ALL break eventually. And when the drive breaks, you loose everything on it.Great drive, buy it. Love it

I've bought & distributed dozens of small storage devices like this to employees where I work. This one has been, by far, the best designed and has the best performance of all that I've tried. It does have two USB connections to achieve that speed, stays cool, and the USB cable plugs into the rear side instead of the rear. Other than where the cable plugs, I am completely satisfied and in love with the Prestige line from Iomega. Completely recommended. I put it in the same category as all of the Prestige drives.*update*Well I come back with bad news... I bought a 1TB capacity model of this drive, did a huge backup to the drive, and during the process the speed of copy just got slower, and slower, and slower. It never stopped, and the drive never even got warm. That being said, a few days later trying to access the drive greeted me with some "drive has not been formatted, would you like to format it?" That's a telltale sign that a drive is about to go bad. I... 4/5 RST (USA) - See all my reviews, April 23, 2010

ITS A CRAP SHOOT - Failure after 4 uses

I treated with "kid gloves" and used this external drive for incremental backup images of my laptop computer. It operated a grand total of "4" times before it failed. Then the inevitable error messages, "disk not recognized", "disk not formatted", freezes, etc. routine took place. After verifying that it was not a result of a problem with my laptop, I new this clunker was a goner. Thank God it didn't fail when I actually needed it to restore my entire hard drive.I don't care to hassle with Iomega technical or customer support to try and rectify this issue. They have already inconvenienced me and wasted enough of my valuable time. Its safe to say I won't be purchasing any more of their products...and to think we used to trust Iomega drives to store my company's CAD files. The moral:You don't need to spend a lot of time researching and pouring over reviews trying to decide which hardware device to purchase. Many of them contradict each other anyway. Just look at... 1/5 Joey R (RICHMOND, VIRGINIA United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great -- once it got going...

I purchased this Iomega external hard drive because of the convenience of having that much storage in such a small space. But it had to work like a thumb drive -- easily portable and transferable. Initially, it did not work as advertised, and I thought I had a defective unit. Amazon was its usual terrific self about replacements, and I received a new one quickly. This one, too, did not sync-up with any of the computers I use at work and home. Rather than send it back, I contacted Iomega support (who were quick and helpful), which walked me through a very complicated -- and not specified in the manual -- procedure involving having to name and partition the drive unit through "My Computer," which took, literally, six hours to complete. This is unacceptable. Iomega needs to set these drives up as plug-and-play, otherwise they are virtually useless. Now that it is re-formatted, however, the drive is working like a charm. But it was a pain in the neck for a while. So, be ready... 4/5 Craig H. Kinsley (Richmond, VA USA) - See all my reviews, April 28, 2010
