I’ve bought 5 Seagate external drives since 2009, including the one featured here.

They all still work.I have used them only to backup my Macs. They don’t leave my home. I do not use Time Machine. I’ve used Super Duper ([...]) for my backup software since 2008. I have no reason to use any other.I have used Apple’s Disk Utility to format my external drives. Here’s how it’s done with current Macs:- Connect the hard drive to the Mac.- Launch Disk Utility, located in Applications > Utilities- Locate the hard drive name from the left hand side of Disk Utility and click on it.- Click on “Partition”. Under “Partition Layout” select number of Partitions. “Current” is one Partition.- Click the "Options" button below “Partition Layout”, choose "GUID"- Name the drive if you want, the name can be changed at any point, even afterwards.- “Format:” click the contextual menu and select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”.- Click “Apply”.When completed, the drive will be formatted to the Mac OS X compatible HFS+... 5/5 trizab (Wadsworth, OH USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not quite as Mac friendly as product advertising would lead you to believe

Overall this is a very good product. I intend to use it on both a PC and Mac to move files between a Windows desktop and a MacBook Air, and to back up the Mac. While I have not yet connected the drive to a Windows machine I had no problems getting it set up with my Mac. This is my first experience with a USB 3.0 product and the speed is wonderful. However - as implied by my review title - this product is not quite as Mac friendly as the summary comments on the Seagate web site would lead you to believe. If one configures the drive to handle both PC and Mac files one cannot use Time Machine to back up to this drive. Further the Mac version of the Dashboard software does not include the back up configuration capability. The online documentation recommends one use Time Machine. My conclusion is that the decision to utilize the drive for both Macs and PCs limits the use of this drive as a primary eternal back up drive for a Mac without additional hardware or software. Best Replacement Drive - A PS4-Specific Review

I felt compelled to write a review specifically for how this drive performs as a replacement for the 500GB 5400RPM drive that comes stock in the Playstation 4. I'll explain why this is the best drive for what I feel are the three main points to consider: Storage space, speed, and price.*Storage space - 500GB will not be enough space for this system in the long-run. The operating system and other mandatory installs take up just under 100GB of space on your drive. Games are now running at full 1080p resolution as well, which makes the game sizes enormous. Most games will take up between 20-50GB. Assuming you are left with about 400GB of usable space after the OS, that will allow approximately 20 games to be installed on your drive if the games are on the SMALL side. The actual amount of games you will be able to fit may be significantly less, as games like Killzone: Shadow Fall are about 40GB. The solution to this issue may be to uninstall games as your drive fills up, but... 5/5 Adam Slade - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Exactly what I needed

5/5 ManInCubicle (Toledo, Oh) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAD500102 (Black) (Personal Computers) I found the usb 2.0 version at best buy for around $79. However I wanted to take advantage of the usb 3.0 so I bought the extra 3.0 cable as well. When I got home I realized that the extra $20 usb 3.0 cable is less than 2 feet long and it can only be used as the cable. The dock system is still only usb 2.0. So I returned it at Best Buy and purchased the full on usb 3.0 version here without having to buy an extra cable. This is a great drive to take with you. The carrying case is easy to fit into your coat pocket or small bag. It is probably one of the smaller magnetic hard drives out there right now even significantly smaller than the non-PRO version. Its 7200RPM spin allows for fast access and for a travel drive that I use when I fix peoples computer I would never need more than 500GB at this time. It has seen daily use since I received it in the mail and has shown no signs of failing. This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAD500102 (Black) (Personal Computers) This drive is so versatile, reliable, and quick that it is simply amazing. I love that you can switch out the cables (USB 2, 3, Firewire, and now Thunderbolt (LightPeek)), and that versatility makes it nearly future-proof. The drive itself is quick (I use USB 3) and has lasted me a while. I actually bought another one from Best Buy when they had a sale to add a bit of data security.I like Seagate's warranty and product support as well. I definitely give this drive a 5/5 star rating and would recommend this to anyone and that is coming from an IT professional that works as a Network Technician for the Navy. This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 750 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAD750102 (Black) (Personal Computers) I bought a portable hard drive because my 8GB USB broke and it was really expensive to get all the data back, needless to say I upgraded. Now I have all my files from any USB I've ever had plus all my computer is backed up on it and I still have so much storage left over. It was worth the investment, for sure. ---update at end---I purchased this drive a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with it. The only junk it was the warranty registration program. Run it then delete it. Single USB not enough

I bought this drive for three reasons:1. Large capacity in a small form factor,2. The ability to power/access it from a single USB port,3. It was on sale at Amazon for under $70.I started using it on my laptop when it arrived yesterday and was impressed: small, and it worked well with the short standard mini-USB cable. Then last night I plugged it in to my desktop and went to transfer over my 400 GB movie directory. It kept failing after about 10 seconds, at which time Windows 7 would report that I had just attached it. My first thought was it was due to the "sleep" utility, so I downloaded and installed the Free Agent tool from Seagate and set the timeout to Never. Didn't make any difference. I then used the test tool in the utility software and the it reported a drive failure at about 8%, and said I should contact Seagate for an RMA. All my other small external drives (except for an ancient 30 GB) need a splitter USB cable: one end connects to the drive... 3/5 Jeffrey Peterman (MD USA) - See all my reviews, July 30, 2010

A gift from god or just... well...geeks (thank you, by the way)

I say it's very efficient because, not once, has it messed up or lost my data or projects and it transfers fairly quickly and very smoothly. I make movies, so it's very essential that i have a reliable source to quickly and easily transfer stuff and go. Sometimes I might need to share data or clips or songs to another computer, it does this nicely, it never has a problem with registering on the computer. As for durability, i can't say much there, i always keep the outside covered by a fitted velvet cover and i've yet to drop it. sorry about that one, i'll remember to drop eveything at least once before writing another review. Have fun with this product guys, be careful with the cords though, they're very sturdy but like any cord, if somewhat mistreated, it will probably short, the problem with this being it does not have a typical usb port on it (remember, it's usb 3.0), otherwise you'd probably have a replacement. i'm sure you could find a cord for 3.0, but just to eliminate hassle... 5/5 Chelsey gardner - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great hard drive.

4/5 Justin (NJ) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Expansion 750GB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STBX750100) (Personal Computers) Got this to load my games onto because my system has a bad SATA controller and kills or makes my SATA hard drives malfunction. The 10 year old PATA 80GB hard drive still works great for booting my OS but it was slow and obviously not capacious enough for games and heavy media. Runs my games better than my PATA drive would that's for sure. The only flaw I have found is that it does not always turn on the interface of the drive when I plug it into the USB port. The drive will power on, but the blue activity light showing that it's picked up by the PC and active does not turn on and my PC doesn't recognize it immediately. However once I unplug it and plug it back in (sometimes several times before it finally takes) it works totally fine. No problems. Great drive. Not sure if that problem is common. Avoid - USB Power Problem

1/5 Z Ricarditich - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate Expansion 750GB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STBX750100) (Personal Computers) I purchased mine in Dec 2012.Unlike my two Western Digital Passport USB3 1 TB external drives (which get their power from their USB cords), this unit, which also gets its power from its USB cord, will not operate properly unless it is attached directly to my computer's USB port.I have an external USB hub with its own 110v power source, and when this unit is connected to that it will not operate properly (the Western Digital drives will). I must plug the USB cord into the computer's USB port.I don't know what Seagate did to produce that result, but it apparently saved money doing such. Seagate 1TB hold up!

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the... 5/5 Vidsavage - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Spontaneous Disconnect/Reconnect Problems

The drive performs well; I ran the HD Tune tests and was impressed with the drive performance, using the eSATA cable attachment with my Sony laptop. And, 1.5 TB in a small, portable, self-powered configuration is a really cool thing.Unfortunately, the drive spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects on its own. Most of the time, this is not that big of a deal, but for some applications (like, say, Windows 7 backup :), the disconnect causes the application to stop whatever it's doing.I use this drive for daily file backups, keeping a portable system image for recovery and I keep some large movies on it, as well. The Seagate support forums are absolutely 'lit up' with this issue and Seagate's universal response is to reformat and try again (i.e. "...you're using it wrong...").My belief is this: the Seagate firmware that will engage a sleep mode on its own; then, when an I/O request comes in, the time required to spin-up causes an I/O... 2/5 Kenneth F. It will fail you when you need it the most, Don't waste your money.

Like most people here, I bought this to backup my files in case my computer had a problem that would otherwise make me lose my files. Two years after I bought this device, the inevitable happened. My computer refused to start up. I thought I was fortunate because I had my files all backed up.However, NO. This drive did not serve the purpose I bought it for. It refused to let me transfer the files from it to my new computer. It had something to do with the version of the software (Seagate GoFlex Backup) that associates with the drive and which allows you to restore your files.Apparently, there is a "Pro" version of this software that also lets you to restore your files in what I thought would be a more intuitive way. I thought that might help so I got the 30-day free trial version of that (seriously? After spending $80 on the drive, Seagate wants to charge you even more just to let you get to your files? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.). If that wasn't enough,... 1/5 Anon Y. Mous - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Crashed & Burned at 7 Months

The pluses: It's light and small, easy to use, and comes preloaded with a document backup utility. Should be great for those who need a portable HDD as it can be dropped in a purse or slipped into a shirt pocket for transport. Decent copying speed for an external USB drive. The negatives: There seems to be a major reliability problem with some of the hard drives (note similar recent reviews of failure at Amazon). Mine died after only 7 months of use on a personal computer. It was never jostled around or subjected to extreme temps as it never left my desktop after it was plugged in. Several utilities were unable to recover any data due to "unreadable sectors" and Master File Table errors -- quite likely physical damage to the head or platters. I managed to save about 20 out of 200+ GB before the unit went totally south.Seagate warranties the drive for 5 years, but it's a whole lot of no fun trying to navigate their cold, impersonal website. Stylish product, dockable, beats my WD Passport drives

I'm a professional photographer who fills up two portable drives a year (I swap the onsite and offsite copies after each shoot). The Western Digital (WD) Passport portables I've been using, at 320 GB each, are full to the brim with all my 2008 'raw' work. Wanting to preserve the data on them, I went shopping for two more portable drives, and came across the Seagate 500 GB GO models. You can't really go wrong with either drive (both companies offer a great five-year warranty), but I like the form factor of the Seagates a bit better (they're a fraction of an inch smaller in all dimensions but LOOK even more svelte than they are). Also, an Amazon promotion currently offers a free dock with the Seagate drives, much like an iPod dock -- just slide the device onto the connector and it mounts on your desktop. Handy and elegant. The WD drives don't have this option. The downside to using the Seagate dock (and this is why I give this setup 4 stars, not 5) is that, for... 4/5 TerryF (Maine, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) So far, so good.

5/5 Bitter Almonds (City Of Dis, 7th Layer Of Hell) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent Go 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST910004FAA2E1-RK (Tuxedo Black) (Personal Computers) I've bought 1 250GB, 7 500GB, and 1TB external HDs over the past two years, and nothing out of the ordinary has happened (knock-on-wood). There were two times when I experienced problems with two separate HDs: I was unable to access files in one of them, so I defragmented it, and it worked perfect since then. The other (1TB HD) did make that horrible beeping and clicking sound a few minutes after I hooked it up to the laptop. However, it ceased to do it an hour later - and it's been working fine since then (it's been about 5 months); this 1TB HD was a refurbished item that cost about $99 total, so I took a chance on an used/cheap item. All in all, though, I've not had a serious problem to report for nine separate HDs of the same brand and make/model. If I was looking to buy another or give it as a gift, I wouldn't hesitate in getting another Seagate FreeAgent Go.
