1001 Ideas That Changed the Way We Think

Creator: Robert Arp | History - 2013-10-29

Within the pages of this book you will find a wide variety of answers to the great, eternal questions: How was the universe created and what is the place of humans within it? How should a person live?

Publisher: Simon and Schuster

About this book
An elegant addition to the successful “1001” series—a comprehensive, chronological guide to the most important thoughts from the finest minds of the past 3,000 years.1001 Ideas That Changed the Way We Think is a comprehensive guide to the most interesting and imaginative thoughts from the finest minds in history. Ranging from the ancient wisdom of Confucius and Plato to today’s cutting-edge thinkers, it offers a wealth of stimulation and amusement for everyone with a curious mind. Within the pages of this book you will find a wide variety of answers to the great, eternal questions: How was the universe created and what is the place of humans within it? How should a person live? And how can we build a just society? 1001 Ideas That Changed the Way We Think also includes a host of hypotheses that are remarkable for their sheer weirdness—from the concept of the transmigration of souls to parallel universes and the theoretical paradoxes of time travel (what happens if you travel back in time and kill your own grandfather?). Discover how the Greek philosopher Zeno “proved” a flying arrow never moves; how modern science has shown that a butterfly’s wing can stir up an Atlantic storm; and the mathematical proof of the existence of life in other galaxies. The inspirational ideas explored here range from Gandhi’s theory of civil disobedience to Henry David Thoreau’s praise of the simple life and Mary Wollstonecraft’s groundbreaking advocacy of women’s rights. The book also covers a wide variety of lifestyle concepts, such as “rational dress” and naturism, and cultural movements including Neoclassicism, Surrealism, and Postmodernism. Supported by a wealth of striking illustrations and illuminating quotations, 1001 Ideas That Changed the Way We Think is both an in-depth history of ideas and a delightfully browsable source of entertainment.

    Seagate 1TB hold up!

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the... 5/5 Vidsavage - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Spontaneous Disconnect/Reconnect Problems

The drive performs well; I ran the HD Tune tests and was impressed with the drive performance, using the eSATA cable attachment with my Sony laptop. And, 1.5 TB in a small, portable, self-powered configuration is a really cool thing.Unfortunately, the drive spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects on its own. Most of the time, this is not that big of a deal, but for some applications (like, say, Windows 7 backup :), the disconnect causes the application to stop whatever it's doing.I use this drive for daily file backups, keeping a portable system image for recovery and I keep some large movies on it, as well. The Seagate support forums are absolutely 'lit up' with this issue and Seagate's universal response is to reformat and try again (i.e. "...you're using it wrong...").My belief is this: the Seagate firmware that will engage a sleep mode on its own; then, when an I/O request comes in, the time required to spin-up causes an I/O... 2/5 Kenneth F. It will fail you when you need it the most, Don't waste your money.

Like most people here, I bought this to backup my files in case my computer had a problem that would otherwise make me lose my files. Two years after I bought this device, the inevitable happened. My computer refused to start up. I thought I was fortunate because I had my files all backed up.However, NO. This drive did not serve the purpose I bought it for. It refused to let me transfer the files from it to my new computer. It had something to do with the version of the software (Seagate GoFlex Backup) that associates with the drive and which allows you to restore your files.Apparently, there is a "Pro" version of this software that also lets you to restore your files in what I thought would be a more intuitive way. I thought that might help so I got the 30-day free trial version of that (seriously? After spending $80 on the drive, Seagate wants to charge you even more just to let you get to your files? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.). If that wasn't enough,... 1/5 Anon Y. Mous - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Super Product

I am mystified as to why reviewers would downgrade the product over Amazon's in-stock or not in-stock problem. I had the same glitch but it was easily fixed and this shipping problem has no bearing on the drive whatsoever. That was just silly.OK, on to the drive. This kind of product you really want to wait a year to see if it fails, so barring that aspect, I will absolutely give it a full 5 stars in all regards.Though 25% smaller than the terabyte RAID 0 boxes out there, this Seagate unit is silent as can be, runs cool with no fan of any kind (the case IS a heat-sink) and is eSATA, and could be installed by any child. The designers really did a fine job of thinking through every aspect of use. You could find a justifiable quibble about the absence of an access LED, but I think they left that off for aesthetic reasons. The thing looks great, dims when in sleep mode, is not obnoxious in any way and is fast. From first-hand experience,... 5/5 R9 (Folsom, CA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Be careful with eSATA if you expect much higher speeds...

Well, I have this drive for 6 months now and I use it a lot to run virtual machines from it. This activity requires a lot of disk performance, so this was my main driving reason to hunt for eSATA drive as opposed to USB.Of course the end performance that you see in reality depends on many factors such as the drive make/model, eSATA card, and host computer characteristics. So I have Seagate FreeAgent Pro eSATA II drive with SIIG eSATA II ExpressCard and Lenovo T61p laptop with 4GB of memory, and I discovered that it performs WAY below the specs, down to the point where eSATA speed is not actually faster than USB 2.0 (the disk supports both). Is it eSATA disk guilty, or a controller card, or a laptop itself? I don't know, but it sucks indeed. To make a simple experiment I performed a copy of a 3GB file from external disk to laptop using Windows Explorer:eSATA - avg. speed 22.84 MB/sec (the speed was significantly lower at the end of copy process, it... 2/5 Boris Lokhvitsky (Bay Area, CA USA) - See all my reviews, May 14, 2008
