Backing Up Your Mac, A Joe on Tech Guide

Creator: Joe Kissell | 2015-06-01

This book helps you design a sensible backup strategy, choose and configure the best backup hardware and software for your needs, and understand how to make your backups as painless as possible.

Publisher: Alt Concepts Incorporated

About this book
The Definitive Guide to Mac Backups Your Mac contains valuable and sometimes irreplaceable files-family photos and videos, business documents, your unfinished novel... not to mention personal data such as email, contacts, and calendars. Without great backups, all of that data could disappear in an instant. We don't like to think about theft, fire, and natural disasters, but these things happen. So do hard drive crashes and other malfunctions (not to mention user error). Your best insurance against losing data forever is a thorough, carefully designed backup plan. You don't have to spend a ton of money or be a technical whiz to back up your Mac. This book helps you design a sensible backup strategy, choose and configure the best backup hardware and software for your needs, and understand how to make your backups as painless as possible. Learn Joe's simple, three-prong strategy for bulletproof Mac backups. Decide whether Time Machine is right for you-and if so, learn how to use it for backing up and restoring data. Discover alternatives to Time Machine for storing multiple versions of your files. Find out why and how to create a bootable duplicate (or clone) of your Mac's startup volume. Choose the best hardware for backing up your data. Learn about offsite storage, including cloud backup services. Know exactly what you'll need to do if disaster strikes. Deal with special backup needs, such as large video files, backups while on the road, and backing up a small network.

    Great overall drive

Update of my previous review of this product:Bought this product in February 2009. Worked fine in the beginning. However, over time, the icon kept disappearing and sometimes would not show up on the "My Computer" screen. Tonite, I tried to do a backup and the entire unit is dead. Just clicks for a few moments and is silent. This can't be normal after just a year and a half of service.Am running Vista 32 on a Dell computer which is little more than 2 yrs old. This may be the last time I buy something from Seagate.Original review:This drive is billed as one with plenty of room and it surely does!! My reason for buying this drive against all similar drives was the esata since I had a esata port on my new computer and naturally wanted to take advantage of the added speed. Ran a backup with the eSATA and it works fine - and much faster!! Done through USB a similar backup would have been at least an hour. With esata, the... 4/5 Gilbert K. Great external drive for lots of data

I was a bit cautious about ordering this drive given some of the reviews I've seen here, but given amazon's return policies and a good history with Seagate products, I decided to go ahead with this purchase.I bought 2 of the drives (both 1.5TB) and I use them for offline backups of my server (which, in addition to day to day data from our laptops, has our entire photo, audio, and video collections). I had been using Seagate 750GB drives for this for the past couple of years, but am outgrowing them and so decided to double the space.I looked also at the Western Digital 2TB drive, but it was substantially more expensive (almost double of the 1.5TB drive) and I couldn't justify the additional cost for just .5TB more, especially when I'm just outgrowing the 750GB drive.Anyway, the drive arrived I hooked up power and used the existing firewire cable that I had been using for the old drive and it was immediately recognized by my system (Dell Latitude... 5/5 Conor P. Has anyone had sucess returning theris???...

Ill give it a 2 since I guess ah.. when it actaully worked, it seemed to work well. Well besides the fact its extremely unvista friendly, and the seagate manager does not agree with vista I guess.. Other then that yea... I thought this thing was suppose to have a 5 year warranty however after a year mine started to crap on me. No longer works with the esata cable. And only sorta works with firewire. It also has a fair ratio of no completely freezing my cpu when its plugged in as well.My question is has anyone had any success with their return policy? How anal are they about returning these things? In their warranty notes they warn you that if they feel the drive still works they will charge you with the shipping and wasting there time. Well.. ive used there seagate tools etc to test my drive, and randomly it says the drive is ok. Other times(when im trying to copy something or a large file and it starts to slow down)I will get errors. And I get a red stop signish symbol... 2/5 some dude - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Format this drive first to avoid issues with this drive!!

I was expecting this drive to be like a spare drive to back up files and store data on and allow me to edit some files as I wanted. I really was expecting it to work just like a jump drive does, but have a lot more storage space. I didn't want to have to plug it into a wall, you know, portable. I wanted to be able to take it to several computers I have at home and at work. What I found out after I placed my order was that these drives by Seagate have pre-installed software on them that once connected to your computer will ask you to load, after a two minute wait. If you install this software "Dashboard" and whatever else is there, you may have some of the issues like all of the other negative ones I read. YOU DON'T NEED THIS SOFTWARE, SO DO NOT INSTALL IT!!! Seagate must think that the only purpose to buy this drive is to do a back-up on one computer and to have it auto run every so often, hence their software. I personnaly am not interested in their software, especially... 3/5 lasfk - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Plenty of space for all your files

I've tried out 3 Seagate GoFlex portable hard drives - the GoFlex Pro Ultra Portable (500gb), the GoFlex Slim (320gb), and the GoFlex Ultra Portable (1TB). I have been happy with all 3 of them actually. I initially had the 500gb but it was getting too full and I decided to try out the 1TB. The 1TB has plenty of space for all my files with plenty of room to spare. It comes with 2 versions of backup software plus some trial versions of programs for syncing and sharing files. Between my 3 Seagate hard drives, I have tried out both of the backup programs included on these hard drives, but since my 1TB is mostly used for extra space I have chosen to just copy files to it manually. I'm very set in my ways and this is how I've always backed up files, whether to another hard drive or to CDs or DVDs so this is what I do on this hard drive. I've used the backup software on my GoFlex Slim though since I am primarily using it for backup and the backup software is easy to use. Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500 GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA500100 (Black)

I am not a techie kind of reviewer as I don't have the expertise - so from a layman's point of view this unit performs well and is every bit as good or better than my old Seagate 250GB I purchased quite some time ago for the same price. So five stars until the review needs updating.I purchased this one for my ex based on Amazon reviews and it is basically a plug and play unit - coming up on her Mac portable as soon as we plugged it in and with a few instructions from me she was backing up her computer hard drive. Mine has a metal case - hers is plastic. She is certainly less computer savvy than I am, and was pleased with how easy it was to plug in and get "worry free" about losing data for some yearly government reports she has to do. (And yes, it did take her losing and having to re-enter a couple of months worth of data to agree to go to a backup system). I call that an ERL (Experience Related Learning).I would assume this is just as easy to... 5/5 Tom Massart (Husum, WA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent Go Special Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive and Docking Station ST905003FPA2E1-RK (Red with Chrome Trim) (Personal Computers) This piece is very quiet and the backup is VERY FAST.It is also very smart in that once a folder is backed up and you want to back it up again, the equipment will only backup the new files within that folder (ignoring the old ones already backed up), which saves you plenty of time!It comes with a software that will manage backup date for you. I found it annoying at first, but then I actually got to love it more a few days later. I can tell it when to backup (hour and day) and what files to backup.Using this device is very easy and just takes common sense. I highly recommend it. Great way to share files between to different computers.I got this because it is designed to travel, less risk of loosing your data from bigger external drives. My LapTop HD is rather small and I can't add a whole lot of new files that are very large.
