This is an awesome laptop. But

This is an awesome laptop. But... you need an ssd (Solid state Drive) to bring this beast to its full glory. The 1080p screen, the keyboard, touch pad, speakers are all awesome. Also the design and aesthetics of this laptop is just amazing. (Brushed aluminum) This comes with a regular 5400rpm 750gb hard drive, you might think "what difference does changing hard drive make in performance?" I'm here to tell you..once you use a solid state drive, its a whole new machine. I have been a IT Tech for over 5 years. So one i got this laptop i turn it on, and first think i noticed was, the start-up time was slow, then once you are in windows, and you try to open applications, its sluggish opens up slowly, web browsing is slow (pages load so slowly). I was like what is going on here, i know the processor is a fast but I'm not seeing it. then i remembered oh yea, the hard drive. i have used solid state in my laptops and desktops since ssd's came out. So went out to best buy got a Samsung evo... 5/5 Ben J. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) It is great for the price but it is a fixer upper

It is great for the price but it is a fixer upper. Out of the box, it was not great. I was coming from a 2010 macbook air with SSD drive that broke so bought this computer because it was a great price. This is what I had to do and I love this computer -- even more then my macbook air. This is what I did, and you will not believe the difference. Make sure you go to the control panel and install all of the windows updates for the computer. Also, go to Intel's website and install the latest drivers for the AC wifi adapter -- it is Intel AC 7260 -- this is actually a top of the line wifi adapter -- i was having a lot of wifi problems and it was fixed with this. It took some getting used to Windows 8 -- but a big thing that I do is always work from the traditional desktop and not the other start screen. When you have apps that you use alot -- for me I go to the control panel alot, bring up the right click on the task bar of the app to "pin" the app at all... 4/5 James Kelly - See all my reviews, February 8, 2015

There are 3 main issues:1) The vendor said this product was like new, but there is a NASTY scar across the top. I could have returned it, but I bought it used so (...) and I didn't buy the thing for it's looks.2) The keyboard setup is annoying, in that function keys are sub-keys by default (hold Fn) (with media shortcuts as the inverse), but there is a Toshiba application that allows you to reverse it.3) The biggest disappointment by far is the whole BIOS integration. The UEFI-BIOS integration has always been hassle IMO, but with this computer they've managed to make it even more difficult to access and configure the BIOS (believe it or not). If you decide to disable UEFI make sure you also disable fast boot. Otherwise you'll be in a situation where you can't access the BIOS without a reflash or some alternate method to the startup process (I still haven't figured this one out)., March 22, 2015

Please Read if Your Drive Isn't "Recognized" Anymore. An Easy Primer and Tutorial.

Many people have complained about the Toshiba 2.5" drives (of all capacities and price points) quickly 'dying' after a very short time. This opinion is prevalent on both Amazon and other shopping sites and even Toshiba's direct site itself.I was in the same boat. My Canvio Basics failed to be "recognized" by my PC within 1 month. My 2-star rating reflects this.HOWEVER, this is directed toward those who believe "all [my] valuable data is lost forever". I conjecture that 99% of the time it is not, and there is a relatively very simple & inexpensive fix.The problem is most likely not with the drive itself but rather the 'bridge' circuitry between the drive and the USB connection. There is most likely nothing wrong with the drive itself, and thus nor is there anything wrong with your data. Such was also the case with me.These drives, regardless of manufacturer or capacity, are essentially identical in their 'guts'. The difference is often... 2/5 TMac - See all my reviews This review is from: Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 1 TB Portable Hard Drive (Black)(HDTB210XK3BA) (Personal Computers) Many people have complained about the Toshiba 2.5" drives (of all capacities and price points) quickly 'dying' after a very short time. Fast, convenient, small and light and easy to connect.

I got a great price for this item so I bought it. It is fast, easy to use and comes with a long 5 foot connector that connects easily to your laptop or computer. I've transferred all of my movies and business data over and it's so convenient. I'm not trusting of clouds and I don't use them as much as others and all I do is keep this tiny hard drive in my laptop case and everything I have is in a secure medium that I dont' have to worry about.I have a Samsung S5 cell phone and it's a little smaller than that is but a little thicker. I have a small camera case that I put it in when I don't want to bring my laptop and I want to take it somewhere.Anthem just had 80 million people lose their information to hackers; several banks, techie companies, and even government agencies have lost millions of peoples information. People can do what they want; but I'm not trusting anyone especially clouds. I have high end techie stuff with lots of storage space as well... 5/5 James Thom (Vallejo, Ca) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Awesome Drive, Be Aware of USB 3.0 Requirements

We got this drive for backing up AVCHD movies from our new camcorder (1080HD takes up a lot more room than 720SD). The drive works like a charm and does everything it's supposed to - it's fast, quiet, and has plenty of space. Works fine with USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports. Some things to consider:* This is a USB 3.0 device. You can use it on USB 2.0 ports, but USB 3.0 devices are less tolerant of out-of-spec components. Some older USB ports cannot handle the signal and power requirements of a USB 3.0 device. For example, I can plug this drive directly into my HP laptop docking station (USB 2.0) and it works like gold. I plug it into the USB ports on the front of one of my desktop PCs (USB 2.0, connected to the USB header on the motherboard) and all the drive will do is come on, make a clicking sound, and report an error in Windows (not enough power going to the drive). I plug it into a rear USB port on the same desktop with an extension cable and it works like... 5/5 Prime Meridian (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Toshiba Canvio 1.0 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive - HDTC610XK3B1 (Black) (Personal Computers) We got this drive for backing up AVCHD movies from our new camcorder (1080HD takes up a lot more room than 720SD). Does what it's supposed to, awesome warranty - Don't be swayed by negative reviews, as ALL HARD DRIVES WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL!

You will see tons of poor reviews for this product. Most of them unfairly point to the drive as an issue, but instead I believe they reflect on a lack of foresight from the user ("lost my data!"), inability to navigate a website ("visited 3 websites, impossible to find how to file a warranty claim"), or just the bad luck of being part of the small percentage of people who receive a DOA drive (that happened to me too, but read on).I've purchased over two dozen of these Canvio drives (sizes anywhere between 500GB and 1TB), mainly because they work just fine, and the warranty covers you when they don't. All drives will fail, that's the nature of the beast (really, they do; just google Google's case study, or BackBlaze's "How long do disk drives last?" article). Portable drives tend to fail a bit sooner, mainly due to them being subject to more "movement" than the 3.5" drives sitting inside your computer case: moving them while in operation (which is why the original iPods had... 5/5 Borgeano (92691) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) For no reason, ejects itself

Revising five stars to one. It worked perfectly fine for month and a half. I thought I was one of the lucky ones.Different story now. What can I say that others haven't already ... the drive "ejects" itself all by itself. One moment it's there, the next it tells me I ejected it improperly. What?! I didn't touch anything! Files then became corrupted. Of course, I'm two weeks past the return window. Having read the horrid tech support reports, I don't even want to deal with it at this point. The manufacturer comments attached to some reviews here merely suggest you try it on a different computer. No thanks. The least they can do is have you contact them directly to resolve the issue.Research of no help, but plenty of horror stories. It's PC Windows. It's Mac OS (all varieties) It's drive failure. It's the USB connection. It's the USB 3.0 cable. It's the USB powered hub. It's the screwy software included. It's from waking up from sleep. It's a mini-power glitch... 1/5 ElmoTheCat (El Verano, CA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Decent general purpose laptop

I bought this laptop on sale. I couldn't find a better performance value than this unit at the time. My friend custom built the same laptop on Toshiba's site and ended up paying about $200 more for the same specs with Windows 7. I figured I'd give Windows 8 a shot for $200 less.- PerformanceThis laptop plays back 1080p video without any issues. I've played a few games of Civ 5 on medium settings without any hiccups. I'm impressed with the Intel 4000 graphics. Office and web browsing are smooth and easily handled.- ScreenThe screen generally looks pretty good. The vertical viewing angle is a little narrow for my taste, but it's still decent for a mid-range laptop. I noticed a bit of screen door effect at first, but it hasn't really bothered me too much.- KeyboardThe keyboard feels nice and has a nice response. My only complaint is the shift button seems to require more pressure than I tend to apply. The touchpad doesn't work since day one. I read the comments before purchasing it, but I though the touchpad would last at least a couple of months. How mistaken I was. The costumer service representatives are very nice, and they all tried different things, but bottom line is that this laptop is a piece of junk and does not worth 560 dollars. I won't return it, because I brought it to Dominican Republic. Send it back and paying to get it shipped here, it would cost me more money that i'm not willing to spend on this machine.
