About this book
A New York Times bestseller: “This terrific new book . . . [explores] the ‘notion of whiteness,’ an idea as dangerous as it is seductive.”—Boston Globe Telling perhaps the most important forgotten story in American history, eminent historian Nell Irvin Painter guides us through more than two thousand years of Western civilization, illuminating not only the invention of race but also the frequent praise of “whiteness” for economic, scientific, and political ends. A story filled with towering historical figures, The History of White People closes a huge gap in literature that has long focused on the non-white and forcefully reminds us that the concept of “race” is an all-too-human invention whose meaning, importance, and reality have changed as it has been driven by a long and rich history of events.

    Bundled Software Unremoveable!

Ok so here's the deal. WD used to sell ordinary hard drives. Good prices. Decent reliability. Just hard drives like everyone else. I own two of the earlier generation 500GB drives and I love them. That was then. Now they think they're "adding value" by including software on the drive for backup and whatnot.Fine.On the 1TB drive, my Mac says over 660 MB is being used for this. You can not erase this data. It appears as a "virtual" CD on the Mac Desktop. The hardware inside the drive protects this virtual CD from being altered in any way.You can run Disk Utility all you want. It won't remove it.WD says it's being "green" by including this on the HD and not a CD.Fine. Admirable. After a lot of customer uproar, they released a utility to HIDE the partition. But you don't get your space back. This partition by the way can "update itself" over the internet.Scared yet?Right now, if you want... 3/5 nicdnyc (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A good external drive with a few annoyances

The series of next-generation My Passport (including My Passport SE high capacity versions) drives from WD that have just come out seem to getting a bad rap. The bone of contention is based on two aspects. One is the new micro-USB connector and the second is the WD SmartWare backup & control software that mounts a second drive when you plug these things into your computer.I wavered endlessly after looking at all the bad reviews despite being interested in getting these. In the end, I decided to purchase both a 500 GB and 750 GB model to see for myself. If the product would be unusable, I could simply return it back.Firstly, the SmartWare. It automatically installs a second drive and it apparently cannot be removed or disabled. However, the software does not take up a lot of space. The capacity on the My Passport SE is 697 GB (750 GB formatted, NTFS), and the SmartWare takes up 569 MB if you right-click your mouse and check the drive's properties. That is less... 4/5 M. Sheet!!!

If I could give the d*mned thing negative stars, I would.I purchased this to back up an aging computer whose hard drive was just about maxed out. I had planned on storing my big files (photos, music) on it until I'd purchased a new computer. Then, I'd transfer everything from the Passport to the new computer and life would be wonderful.Good thing I tried to transfer files to a laptop before I did anything irreparable. The d*mned thing won't allow me to download to a different computer!!! I can return files to where they originally lived, but that doesn't do me an ounce of good with a hard drive that's burst its seams.I downloaded updated software. I fiddled. Then, in a last ditch attempt, I called WD support. They put me thru the same paces I'd already done on my own. Still no communication with "alien" computers.AFTER NINETY MINUTES ON THE PHONE WITH WD TECH SUPPORT THE REP FINALLY ADVISED ME TO GIVE UP AND INSTEAD DOWNLOAD DATA... 1/5 Anon (Sitting In Front Of My Computer) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Serves an important nitch for my laptop. Ultra-quiet.

Purchased my model at a local discout store (Costco) rather than Amazon, but interestingly it was available for exactly the same price as Amazon at the time of the review.INSTALLATION ON WINDOWS XPAlmost no useful instructions. A very skeletal picture diagram was provided, only sort of directing me to connect the provided cable between the drive and my computer USB port. HOWEVER, that in fact turned out to be was all that was needed for installation. The order of connection, whether the computer was turned on or off, software running or not, all trivia that other past device instructions have regulated -- these just didn't seem to matter. I took a deep breath and plugged away with computer already powered on. The remainder was done flawlessly by the drive and its software. It was a bit confusing, however, that other than the usual Windows generated signals to confirm my computer recognized the presence of a new drive and had accepted it, there... 4/5 Quadradox (United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Western Digital 750GB External Hard Drive WDBABM7500ABK (Electronics) Purchased my model at a local discout store (Costco) rather than Amazon, but interestingly it was available for exactly the same price as Amazon at the time of the review.INSTALLATION ON WINDOWS XPAlmost no useful instructions.
