The End of Boys

Creator: Peter Hoffmeister | Biography & Autobiography - 2011-05-24

Peter Hoffmeister was a nervous child who ran away repeatedly and bit his fingernails until they bled.

Publisher: Soft Skull Press

About this book
Peter Hoffmeister was a nervous child who ran away repeatedly and bit his fingernails until they bled. Home-schooled until the age of fourteen, he had only to deal with his parents and siblings on a daily basis, yet even that sometimes proved too much for him. Over the years, he watched his mother disintegrate into her own form of mania, while his father—a scholar and doctor who had once played semi-pro baseball—was strict and pushed Peter particularly hard. He wanted only the best from his son but in the process taught Peter to expect only the worst from himself. In the midst of his chaotic home life, Peter began to hear a voice—an insistent, monotone that would periodically dictate his actions. When Peter finally entered public school he started to break free from his father’s control—only to fall sway to the voice more and more. His obsessive-compulsive behavior morphed into ruthless competition in sports and, ultimately, into lies, violence, and drugs. The End of Boys follows Hoffmeister to the very brink of sanity and back, in a harrowing and heartbreaking account of the trauma of adolescence and the redemption available to us all, if only we choose to find it.

Amazingly simple to set up (and I'm big time technologically challenged!)

I was very nervous about setting this up, didn't want to have to spend hours on the phone with Apple Care, tech setups like this scare the big jeez outta me. But I had switch to this device because the NetGear router we had was not enough to carry the signal through the house. So I bought the Time Capsule to work as the router as well as a backup disc, along with two Airport Express stations to serve as network extenders to enhance the wi-fi signal in the house. From the time I opened the box to the time I had all three devices fully operational was probably 20 minutes! The set up couldn't have been simpler! If you are in the same shoes I was when considering this device, here's a quick summary of steps:1. Connect Time Capsule to ethernet cable coming from your cable or DSL box2. Connect printer or other USB device using USB jack3. Connect any other ethernet device that requires a hardwire (I had to connect my Vonage router and AT&T MicroCell)... 5/5 🎭 FreeSpirit - See all my reviews, October 26, 2012

Save money on a new Macbook / iMac by buying this 2TB Apple Time Capsule --- Read How >>>

Why did I buy the Apple Time Capsule?Recently I was in the market for a new Macbook Pro so I started doing a lot of research on specs and prices. I am sure you do the same thing with a big ticket item like that. First I looked on Apple's website, then here on Amazon where I found a better deal. I don't use eBay anymore because of the large number of scammers on there, but I'm sure there are very reputable sellers as well. If you feel comfortable there, then go for it.I decided to buy this particular Macbook Pro with a retina display: BTW, Amazing!!! I am super happy about this purchase and you will find my review on it there as well.As you can see if you clicked on the link above, this... 5/5 Leontine Vandermeer (Venice, FL United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Using with PCs (XP & 7)

UPDATE: Apple updated the firmware, and now, windows access is even easier! The Airport Utility allows you to link the Time Capsule to a windows workgroup name. Clearly, now, Apple is the absolute best network server available.(Amazon, on the other hand, has made updating reviews tedious.)I have an OLD (2004) SimpleShare file server... works fine for 160MB, but it is small and old. Time for an upgrade.A year or 2 ago, I attempted this with an IOmega Media server. It was junk. I salvaged the hard drive and the rest wasn't worth keeping. Very poor support. Unfortunately, the reviews of the WD systems here on Amazon indicate similar problems, slowness of transfers and what not.The reviews of the Time Capsule were glowing... and, several people indicated that it plays nicely with XP and Win7. I decided it was the best option, so it arrived in a couple days.Currently, it is in a minimalist configuration. I did not need the... 5/5 Donald W. So far so good

Going on three months of use. I do wonder about some of the posts about this thing dying after 18 months as this particular model (dual band) has not been in existence that long...As a router, this thing is tops. Used it to replace a Linksys N router. I get much better range and much faster data now on my macbook. Before, in my bedroom, less than 50 ft away from my router, I couldn't watch standard def Hulu videos at all. Now I can stream high def videos without any delays or pauses. Part of it is because I also have G devices (Wii, iphones, etc) and the old linksys was forced to operate on that slower frequency. This thing effectively gives you a separate G router and N router- so my macbook finally can operate at full N speed but still provide service to older devices. This thing smokes the linksys in range and speed. As a time capsule it works. I backup my iMac and my Macbook to it. I had a Seagate drive before that died after 9 months. So now I have a time... 5/5 rprice54 (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A Little Expensive, But A Great Product

After searching for weeks for a replacement a Cisco Router that had gone rouge, my boss told me to look into the Time Capsule. Now, several months in, I am happy to say that I have found my favorite router to date. Not only does the Time Capsule look great, but it's dual-band capabilities and storage capacity make this a must have for an Apple Lover or a person who is looking for a clean looking router that will fit in nicely around the home. Now, I wont lie, this is definitely more expensive than other routers out there, but for two reasons, I would say it is worth the money.1) Ease of Use and Ease of Setup: Setting this router up with the Mac I own was a breeze. I don't know how it could have been easier. Plug your internet connection into the router and your computer will pick up the new wireless network. Immediately you will be asked to adjust the settings to your liking and after a few clicks you will be good to go. Also, the Airport Utility was a piece of... 4/5 Mindray (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 1 year and still working great

Purchased the apple time capsule on 8 Jan 2010. The item was easy to setup and has been working flawlessly so far! I have it bridged with a Belkin router, which I keep less secure in order to enable an older Xbox 360 (it does not like security & connects wirelessly 80211g) to connect to the network for gaming purposes. Everything else, wii, PS3, 2 PC's, and 2 Mac's are all routed through the time capsule wirelessly using 80211n. The house is 2 stories with the routers, DSL modem and 1 PC located on the upper floor with everything else spread out on the lower floor. The signal strength for the time capsule is nearly always excellent in all locations; the Belkin router is low to good.Initial backups on the macs take some time (1 hour or more) but once this is done routine backups don't take as much time (<30 minutes). I have not tried backing up any of the PCs since they are primarily used as backups too. The time capsule which stays on 24/7 is always luke warm to the... 5/5 BByronB (TN) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
