Spline Models for Observational Data

Creator: Grace Wahba | Mathematical statistics - 1990

This book serves well as an introduction into the more theoretical aspects of the use of spline models.

Publisher: SIAM

About this book
This book serves well as an introduction into the more theoretical aspects of the use of spline models. It develops a theory and practice for the estimation of functions from noisy data on functionals. The simplest example is the estimation of a smooth curve, given noisy observations on a finite number of its values. The estimate is a polynomial smoothing spline. By placing this smoothing problem in the setting of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, a theory is developed which includes univariate smoothing splines, thin plate splines in d dimensions, splines on the sphere, additive splines, and interaction splines in a single framework. A straightforward generalization allows the theory to encompass the very important area of (Tikhonov) regularization methods for ill-posed inverse problems. Convergence properties, data based smoothing parameter selection, confidence intervals, and numerical methods are established which are appropriate to a wide variety of problems which fall within this framework. Methods for including side conditions and other prior information in solving ill-posed inverse problems are included. Data which involves samples of random variables with Gaussian, Poisson, binomial, and other distributions are treated in a unified optimization context. Experimental design questions, i.e., which functionals should be observed, are studied in a general context. Extensions to distributed parameter system identification problems are made by considering implicitly defined functionals.

    Horrible

Probably the Amazon purchase I regret the most. YOU CAN TRUST THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS!! I wish I had.I have only had this drive since January. It was easy to install, easy to move files, etc. About a month ago, the drive started malfunctioning. My computer wouldn't recognize it, and it stopped connecting to my computer. Mind you, I have so much of my data stored on this thing. A few days ago, it just stopped working all together. Before, it was like it worked for ten minutes, then shut off, and back and forth like that.On Saturday, I discovered that the USB port was broken and floating around inside the drive. I called Seagate TEN MINUTES AGO and found out from one guy that I had two options: 1.there may be a chance that only the part can be fixed, and 2.data recovery. The data recovery costs $1700 to 2000. Yes, you read that right. Now, look at the price Amazon sells this for. I paid only $86 for it. Why would I send this back, only to NOT get a direct... 1/5 Eller (MD) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Peace of Mind

I did a lot of research before ordering this drive.Pros:1. Good looking (who cares)2. Sturdy and well built3. Fast, but no external HD is as fast as and internal HD4. Runs cool and extremely quiet5. No setup. Comes already preformatted with NTFS file system-- Some externals come preformatted with FAT32 and you have to reformat them or expect trouble down the road when XP and/or Vista refuses to recognize them claiming that the device is not formatted, thus losing all your data.6. Separate power supply takes the strain off USB ports and makes drive more reliable. (Some may not like the power supply, but USB ports have got to be upgraded sooner or later to accommodate all the hardware that now uses them. Some machines have increased the amps to the USB ports only to run into the problem of frying some USB hardware, especially during a hot swap.)7. Inexpensive8. 5-year warranty... 4/5 Marvin Cohn (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews, October 27, 2007

    No frills - holds data.

I've got an older 160 GB Western Digital external HD that I bought for about $90 a year or so ago. It works fine, but it is getting a bit low on space, now that I am saving more digital photos and videos to it.So, I snooped around and decided this Seagate was a good choice for the amount of money I was willing to spend.Pros:1. It came with the USB cable and AC adaptor. (Also a PDF of the warranty on the drive).2. Plug and play installation.Cons:No on/off switch. No "writing to drive" light. No software (for me, it's a "pro", however).Takes a long time (30 secs or so) to open a directory that has directories inside. If it just has files, it's fine. The lack of a switch does not bother me as the drive is not intended for daily use. It mostly sits on a shelf in the original plastic bag packaging until I hook it up once a week or so.The "writing to disk" light would be nice just to let me know... 4/5 K. Great unit

5/5 Danboy (Lacey, WA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Maxtor OneTouch 4 Lite 250 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) I found this unit to be just what I needed. Easy to set up and get started, especially for a "non-techy" computer user. I expect to have a huge photo album on it, as well as a condensed version of the same to put on DVDs, as well as back up for my main internal hard drive. Confusing backup system

1/5 Geoff Churchill (Toccoa, GA USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Maxtor OneTouch 4 Lite 250 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (Personal Computers) The Maxtor 250 Gig One-Touch backup system's hardware is probably fine. The (you gotta print it yourself) manual is not too informative and requires 4 times as many pages as the information presented can justify. I still don't think all my data is actually backed up. My computer has folders containing data that the Maxtor software refuses to show. When I look at the contents of the backup using Windows Explorer I see no sign of those folders. I may need to manually copy those folders to the backup drive - I do not think I can rely on Maxtor's automatic backup. I'm not satisfied.
