The History of Languages, An Introduction

Creator: Tore Janson | Language Arts & Disciplines - 2012

An introduction to the history of languages, from distant past to distant future, looking at how languages arise, change, and die, and showing how the histories of peoples and languages are closely connected.

Publisher: Oxford University Press

About this book
This is an introduction to the history of languages, from the distant past to a glimpse at what languages may be like in the distant future. It looks at how languages arise, change, and ultimately vanish, and what lies behind their different destinies. What happens to languages, he argues, has to do with what happens to the people who use them, and what happens to people, individually and collectively, is affected by the languages they speak. The book opens by examining what languages the hunter-gatherers might have spoken and the changes to language that took place when agriculture made settled communities possible. It then looks at the effects of the invention of writing, the formation of empires, the spread of religions, and the recent dominance of world powers, and shows how these relate to great changes in the use of languages. Tore Janson discusses the appearance of new languages, the reasons why some languages spread and others die, considers whether similar cyclical processes are found at different times and places, and examines the causes of internal changes in languages and dialects. The book ranges widely among the world's languages and mixes thematic chapters on general processes of change with accounts of specific languages, including Chinese, Arabic, Latin, Greek, and English.

    USB Works, eSATA Flucuates

3/5 G. Abbott (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in Black eSATA USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD (Personal Computers) Works fine (though a bit slow) on USB connection. eSATA connection, however, drifts in and out making it very difficult to transfer more than a file or two at a time. I gave up trying to copy my hard drive via eSATA and was going to return it, but then tried the USB and it worked just fine but took hours for a 500 GB drive to be cloned to a new 1 TB drive. For the price, wasn't worth effort and cost to return and see if another one works better on eSATA. Bottom line - it did the job but slowly and not without multiple tries and fiddling. Love!

5/5 Kristie - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in eSATA USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD (Personal Computers) I was not expecting much when i first ordered this case. Being a novice about such things, i basically closed my eyes and bought the first thing i saw.Have to say, Now that i have it, I cant be happier! The case is small and light, yes it gets warm, but it never gets too hot to touch and that just tells me it is pulling heat away from the drive and is all the better for it. Also, I needed to switch the drive in and out of it a couple of times in order to test some other HDs I had. The screws never gave me any kind of issues and the connections seemed solid enough for the rigors of repeatedly being unplugged and re-plugged as long as i was careful and did not force it.Over all,I would recommend this to everyone. Hot Swap Problem?

3/5 Eileen McGuire - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in Black eSATA USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD (Personal Computers) The enclosure is not eSATA "hot-swapable" on my HP Pavilion DV6 laptop: the PC doesn't recognize the external drive when I connect the enclosure to the eSATA port while the PC is running. It WILL recognize the drive if I connect it before booting the PC. The enclosure's USB connection works normally (plug and play). I am using a new WD 750 GB "black" hard drive in the enclosure. Strong initial impression for the 8-bay enclosure

New February 2016:I've had two of these in heavy use for over a year now attached to my DIY linux server. I initially had some struggles getting these to operate reliably but with some hacks I'm super happy with these considering the price point. Right now I'm considering buying a third unit as I've filled every bay in both of mine recently and I want to stay ahead of my disk space demands.I'm bumping my review to 5 stars not because it's a perfect device but because with the right tweaks it has become a better than expected device for my needs at this price point. I'll try to summarize how I got these units working rock solid for me in my context. I should say I don't know what is really needed for me, some of these steps may be unnecessary but I'm not going to bother testing each item individually.1. Got to disable power saving sleep modes. Fast while it lasted. Failed after only two months.

2/5 Kevin (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com USB 3.0 eSATA Dual 3.5-Inch SATA III Hard Drive RAID Enclosure with UASP and Fan - Black (S3520BU33ER) (Personal Computers) This is only the second enclosure in the past 10+ years that I have had fail on me. At least the other one a OWC enclosure failed after 5 years and not two months like this one. I liked the specs on this case and despite the other negative reviews, thought that maybe they just got a bad unit. I have a feeling that a good majority of these are going to fail, it is not a question of if they will fail, but rather when. I have reached out to the tech support to see about getting this replaced. I reached out to them over the weekend and received a response back by Tuesday afternoon. Not too bad, but not great either. I will see how long it takes for the entire RMA Process and report back. As soon as the replacement fails, I will spend the extra money and buy an OWC or another name brand with a good reputation. I guess the old saying, "you get what you pay for," definitely applies here. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 20, 2014

Fast, but only lasted about 2 months (Model#S3520BU33ER)

1/5 Steve - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com USB 3.0 eSATA Dual 3.5-Inch SATA III Hard Drive RAID Enclosure with UASP and Fan - Black (S3520BU33ER) (Personal Computers) Fast, but only worked properly for about 2 months (using JBOD, USB 3.0 Port/Cable, new 3TB SATA HDD installed). After about 2 months, it started popping up a message that asks to format the hard drive. As a workaround when this enclosure stops reading the drive, I have to unplug the enclosure for a while, sometimes it comes back up and works fine for a couple of days, and sometimes I have to keep cycling the power over and over until it starts recognizing the drive again (and seems to be getting worse over time). The enclosure is never moved, in a cool/dry well ventilated place, but still only worked trouble-free for about 2 months. However, I haven't had the time to pinpoint whether it is an enclosure issue, or a hard drive issue. But, I can't help but notice that several other people have experienced similar issues with this particular enclosure. works great, soft power button

5/5 Jake - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5/3.5 HDD (Personal Computers) This is a good hard drive dock, but I like some of StarTech's older designs (previous USB 2.0 models) better. Keep in mind this dock has a "soft" power button, meaning it is not a hard toggle that stays on. If the power goes out or you remove a drive while powered up, the dock will not come back on unless you physically press the power button again. No issues out of this dock aside from a couple Seagate drives I have acting quirky (showing up in OS, but having issues reading partitions). This only seems to happen with these 2 specific drives (ST500LM000 and ST500DM002) on this dock, they work fine with a Sabrent SATA adapter or on an older StarTech dock. I've put over 50 hard drives (mix of WD, Seagate, and Toshiba) in this dock, so I think it is just some controller firmware weirdness. Unreliable for backup

1/5 Tyler Szabo (Bellevue, WA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5/3.5 HDD (Personal Computers) I'm not buying one of these from StarTech again. After having problems with it for years I'm finally going to just throw it out and look for another one. It doesn't draw enough power to sustain a drive with the adapter it comes with. So you might be 20 minutes into a backup only to have the drive suddenly disconnect and stop. Plugging into a UPS doesn't help (it's not the power quality). I had to get a 3rd party power adapter to give it 12V 3A and it still drops sometimes. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 20, 2016

    SuperSpeed and SuperValue

My laptop crashed recently. It was the motherboard, not the hard drive, so I didn't loose any data. I also recently installed a new desktop system. Having the crash reminded me that I needed a backup system. One that was fast and easy to use. I had a older version of a Startech external drive that I really didn't use much but also had no complaints about. However, I wanted a unit that was easier to install/remove the drive; Because I had one of their older units I investigated what Startech had in their product line and discovered this unit. It's super easy to install/remove SATA 3.5" and 2.5" drives. There is even a side button that ejects the drives from the connectors but I tend to just lift them out myself. It comes with fast 3.0 USB interface/cables (superspeed 10GB/sec throughput). If you don't yet have USB 3.0 ss ports it will work on USB 2.0 just as well, only slower transfer speeds. To be honest, with USB3.0 in ss mode, I only get 800Mbps+ throughput... 5/5 Cellerdoor - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) StarTech 2.5 inch Silver Power eSATA external Enclosure

I ordered this because I needed a 2.5" eSATA housing to clone a laptop drive. Upon opening the package I was really disappointed. The quality of this thing is not worth the money. The end where the cables go is nothing but plastic. The top and bottom cover that slide off are very poor quality formed aluminum with sharp edges. The center section that holds the circuit board and electronics is nothing but cheap chrome plated pot metal. Not very sturdy at all. For what you pay for this, and what StarTech wants as a list price, you would expect to get a Power USB/eSATA cable, but you do not. You get a very cheap looking and feeling double head USB 2.0 cable to mini USB. The one end of the cable with the standard two USB 2.0 ends is so short, it won't stretch between two USB ports on a common laptop, so it's useless. The only way I was able to use this thing is to use my own USB 2.0 cable and an external eSATA cable. sad to say, the best out there in powered eSATAp

A few years ago, you could buy a case made of decently thick extruded aluminum. This thing is made of a chrome plated plastic central frame, with two sliding covers made of thin stamped aluminum. The covers tend to stick and require hard pressure, shaving off bits of plastic. Junk! The quality is not there. The indicator light glows a constant orange, with no indication of drive activity. Inexplicably, the drive activity LED is mounted on the board in such a way that it is completely blocked by the power LED. Are we talking genius here? The usb bridge is definitely not functional with drives larger than 500GB -- I tested this. And an eSATAp cable is not provided. Startech wants to stick you for their pricey cable.
