The History of Languages, An Introduction

Creator: Tore Janson | Language Arts & Disciplines - 2012

An introduction to the history of languages, from distant past to distant future, looking at how languages arise, change, and die, and showing how the histories of peoples and languages are closely connected.

Publisher: Oxford University Press

About this book
This is an introduction to the history of languages, from the distant past to a glimpse at what languages may be like in the distant future. It looks at how languages arise, change, and ultimately vanish, and what lies behind their different destinies. What happens to languages, he argues, has to do with what happens to the people who use them, and what happens to people, individually and collectively, is affected by the languages they speak. The book opens by examining what languages the hunter-gatherers might have spoken and the changes to language that took place when agriculture made settled communities possible. It then looks at the effects of the invention of writing, the formation of empires, the spread of religions, and the recent dominance of world powers, and shows how these relate to great changes in the use of languages. Tore Janson discusses the appearance of new languages, the reasons why some languages spread and others die, considers whether similar cyclical processes are found at different times and places, and examines the causes of internal changes in languages and dialects. The book ranges widely among the world's languages and mixes thematic chapters on general processes of change with accounts of specific languages, including Chinese, Arabic, Latin, Greek, and English.

    USB Works, eSATA Flucuates

3/5 G. Abbott (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in Black eSATA USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD (Personal Computers) Works fine (though a bit slow) on USB connection. eSATA connection, however, drifts in and out making it very difficult to transfer more than a file or two at a time. I gave up trying to copy my hard drive via eSATA and was going to return it, but then tried the USB and it worked just fine but took hours for a 500 GB drive to be cloned to a new 1 TB drive. For the price, wasn't worth effort and cost to return and see if another one works better on eSATA. Bottom line - it did the job but slowly and not without multiple tries and fiddling. 5/5 Kristie - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in eSATA USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD (Personal Computers) I was not expecting much when i first ordered this case. Being a novice about such things, i basically closed my eyes and bought the first thing i saw.Have to say, Now that i have it, I cant be happier! The case is small and light, yes it gets warm, but it never gets too hot to touch and that just tells me it is pulling heat away from the drive and is all the better for it. Also, I needed to switch the drive in and out of it a couple of times in order to test some other HDs I had. The screws never gave me any kind of issues and the connections seemed solid enough for the rigors of repeatedly being unplugged and re-plugged as long as i was careful and did not force it.Over all,I would recommend this to everyone. Hot Swap Problem?

3/5 Eileen McGuire - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in Black eSATA USB External Hard Drive Enclosure for SATA HDD (Personal Computers) The enclosure is not eSATA "hot-swapable" on my HP Pavilion DV6 laptop: the PC doesn't recognize the external drive when I connect the enclosure to the eSATA port while the PC is running. It WILL recognize the drive if I connect it before booting the PC. The enclosure's USB connection works normally (plug and play). I am using a new WD 750 GB "black" hard drive in the enclosure. It constantly reads 0.0%. The unit still wipes the drive and displays the total time upon completion. Startech is aware of this bug but could not provide a timeline to issue an update. To give you an estimate a 7200 RPM laptop SATA 2 drive seems to wipe about 4GB per minute. So a 500GB would take 125 minutes for a 1-pass wipe.I'll be keeping the unit, but definitely minus a star until the firmware update solves this problem., May 25, 2016

Best Dock You Can Buy If You Are in the Market for One This Is the One to Buy!

This is an absolutely outstanding hard drive dock. I have been using hard drive docking stations for years and this is by far the best designed unit I have ever used. Prior to purchasing this Startech dock I had been a user of Vantec Nexstar products without issue. However my recent purchase of an upgraded product from that company resulted in a very unpleasant experience. I would experience random disconnects over USB 3.0 with the competitors product and a general unreliability overall.I'm delighted to report that with the Startech USB 3.0 and eSata hard drive dock I am experiencing no issues whatsoever and everything is functioning beautifully. Furthermore there are no size limitations when it comes to the drives you want to use with this unit, I am currently using an 8 TB Seagate NAS drive with my dock and I'm experiencing no issues whatsoever. Also, I cannot stress enough how useful the included fan is for keeping your drives cool when in use. Works with receipt printer, so far so good

I've been testing this unit rigorously for about a week. After running about 50 drives through this thing during the past few weeks, I can say that it is worth the money to anyone that has to securely and verifiably erase a large volume of drives. After considering bulkier standalone duplicator / eraser units, as well as software only solutions, I decided on this dock / eraser. I can erase drives without having to have my workstation dedicated to the task as well as use the dock for traditional USB access. I do have a receipt printer connected to this unit and it works flawlessly. Upon a successful wipe of any kind, a receipt is printed detailing the drive model, serial number, capacity, the erase type, and the start and finish times of the wipe. This information is also stored in a log on the eraser dock itself and may be retrieved / reprinted at any time. The wipe receipt even includes a signature line. I just purchased this enclosure from Amazon, along with a 320GB 2.5-inch hard drive and a . My first impression is that the enclosure is well-designed and works well.I bought this stuff specifically for my Dell E4310 laptop, on which I'm running Ubuntu. This is the first laptop I've had with a power-eSATA port. I've long been frustrated with external USB hard drives that require either two USB ports or a separate power adapter. I wanted to find out whether power-over-eSATA works well, and so far it does. Here's how it went:I opened up the enclosure by depressing the two knurled tabs on the side and sliding the top cover forward. (I couldn't figure that out at first, but the little flyer provided with the enclosure explained it clearly.) StarTech 2.5 inch Silver Power eSATA external Enclosure

I ordered this because I needed a 2.5" eSATA housing to clone a laptop drive. Upon opening the package I was really disappointed. The quality of this thing is not worth the money. The end where the cables go is nothing but plastic. The top and bottom cover that slide off are very poor quality formed aluminum with sharp edges. The center section that holds the circuit board and electronics is nothing but cheap chrome plated pot metal. Not very sturdy at all. For what you pay for this, and what StarTech wants as a list price, you would expect to get a Power USB/eSATA cable, but you do not. You get a very cheap looking and feeling double head USB 2.0 cable to mini USB. The one end of the cable with the standard two USB 2.0 ends is so short, it won't stretch between two USB ports on a common laptop, so it's useless. The only way I was able to use this thing is to use my own USB 2.0 cable and an external eSATA cable. Oh, and who in the devil had the idea to put a neo magnet on the... 2/5 Bluesky5553 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) sad to say, the best out there in powered eSATAp

A few years ago, you could buy a case made of decently thick extruded aluminum. This thing is made of a chrome plated plastic central frame, with two sliding covers made of thin stamped aluminum. The covers tend to stick and require hard pressure, shaving off bits of plastic. Junk! The quality is not there. The indicator light glows a constant orange, with no indication of drive activity. Inexplicably, the drive activity LED is mounted on the board in such a way that it is completely blocked by the power LED. Are we talking genius here? The usb bridge is definitely not functional with drives larger than 500GB -- I tested this. And an eSATAp cable is not provided. Startech wants to stick you for their pricey cable. Buy the 3rd party cable; it is well made.Be that as it may, there is so little inherent in an eSATA enclosure, it could be expected to work, and it did. First I tried a WD750 7200 RPM drive.
